As you probably already know, jumping the fuse can fry other components, (even if it’s only for 2 seconds), use a volt meter and check it for continuity. The other thing I wanted you to know is that you SHOULD have used the wire(s) that came with the fuse. It’s a common problem that Whirlpool appliances have and Whirlpool had to come up with a “fix” for it. That fix was those wires. Just replacing the fuse itself may not be enough. The wires going to the fuse tend to over heat causing the fuse to blow. Replacing those wires that came WITH the fuse will stop that problem. It’s easy to do, just cut and strip the wires and stick them into the connector that came with the fuse and screw them down tightly. I can’t tell you how many times I have to go back to people’s homes and reinstall it WITH the wires because it can/will possibly blow again. I’m a certified Sears appliance technician. Good luck in your endeavors, all in all, this wasn’t a bad video.
These are great advice. I am going to dig up those wires and install them like you said. I also got myself a volt meter so I can do continuity tests going forward. Thanks for commenting and the feedback. Really appreciate it.
The Patriots Brother... Ha, you are everywhere. I just had a thought. My heating element and HiTemp thermostat may be aging because I'm overworking them with all the HiTemp cleaning modes and my HOT water only averages maybe 85° because I'm on the 3rd floor of a 100yr old condo. Water pressure is OK, but I have to run HOT water for a while to get 100°+ water.
@@ThePatriotsBrother - My Maytag manufacturer date is 2010 or 2011. Would that be considered NEW? It washed dishes fine for years, but quit in 2017. I just fixed it fall of 2019. I really don't like washing dishes, lol!
Thank you so much Danny! I am a a 56 year old woman and just fixed the dishwasher BY MYSELF! Thanks to you of course! My part was ordered through Home Depot and arrived in 2 days for under $9. I'm pretty excited!
That’s awesome! I love hearing that people are able to do this stuff on their own…this is why I started making these DIY videos, since I’ve learned so much on RU-vid myself. Thank you for commenting. It is very encouraging. Have a great rest of the week!
Thanks very much. After following your detailed instructions (which were more effective than at similar RU-vid pages for this issue) I found the same kind of debris around the food chopper area - a plastic fork handle, a shard of glass, and a few toothpicks. After re-assembly I removed the fuse and found it had no continuity. I also jumped it per your instruction and the panel lit up. The KitchenAid website wanted $37 for the fuse kit; I got it on Amazon for $8 with 2-day delivery. This sure beats paying over $1,000 to buy a replacement for my 26-year-old machine!
Extremely clear and helpful content. You saved my dishwasher. I followed your instructions exactly and am thrilled to say the dishwasher is working! Thank you!!
I followed your instructions, cleaned and checked the filter plus did a troubleshoot of the fuse. That was it. Replaced with one from Amazon and it's working again. Thanks!
Accurate video, probably saved me hundreds of bucks today. I followed the instructions and cleaned it up. The only things stuck there are a few unsolved plastic wraps of detergent capsules; after removal, power and lights came back so I didn't even open to check the fuse/motherboard. Who would think detergent capsules can cause such a problem!
That’s fantastic! Glad it worked for you without replacing the fuse. Make sure you do a cleaning every few months. It will keep your dishwasher running like new :-). Thanks for commenting. Have a great rest of the week!
Thanks Danny. Worked great to help diagnose a blown fuse. Ordered mine and awaiting it's arrival. Fuse arrived, replaced it and it worked, dishwasher is running at this moment. I also took a few minutes and checked the filter and grinder and found plastic pieces in there. Works like a charm now.
Dude, youre a life saver. My dishwasher took a crap this am. It was the same fuse. Watched your video, troubleshot, and figured it out. Got a new one locally, but it was 30 bucks. It was worth it to get it going today, instead of in a week. Thanks man.
So thankful for your video! Our 16 year old Kitchenaid DW same model, lights stopped during cycle .Followed your instructions exactly and sure enough it was the fuse. Great video!!
Thanks so much for this easy fix for the fuse. I had run my Kitchenaid on hi-temp scrub and it died in the middle of the cycle. I don't do many repairs so going slowly, it took me an hour and a half including the cleaning. The easiest part was changing the fuse I am so glad I found your video - saved me time and $$.
Just confirmed my issue was the thermal fuse by using a wire between the two contacts (all I had) to confirm it was bad. Thank you so much for showing us how to confirm the issue before ordering the part. Wish you well and thank you for taking the time and explaining all of this so well!!!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Very detailed explanation. I have the model with the small panel on the front but was still able to complete the repair. With almost 256,000 views you surely have helped many people save lots of money on this repair. Thanks again!
Excellent tutorial and clear and concise info. I took everything you did and cleaned out 12 years of built up crud, seed pits, plastic bottle cap. Easy fix and went back together easily. I tested it and worked perfect.....With all the gunk I cleaned out of the reservoir and I think it'll do a better job now. Thanks for saving me a few hundred buck$! Oh and my fuse was bad also.
I was already shopping for a replacement washer, then searched youtube--"no power kitchenaid dishwasher" your video came up......you saved me $800.00 (or postponed it's use). FYI, I clicked your Amazon link, it took me to some Canadian Amazon page. I left and went to US Amazon page and ordered from different vendor. Thanks for video, sorry about link.
Glad the video helped....and glad you were able to find a similar part in the US Amazon site. Happy you can get more life out of your dishwasher. Have a great rest of the week. Thanks for commenting.
Dude! Dude! Wow! Thank you so much! Followed this video to the letter and my machine is working again! Literal lifesaver. Thank you for the gift of this video!
Nice, easy to follow tutorial. Cautionary note: Best to switch out both fuse & wiring - otherwise it will likely blow again. It's easily done, look up "thermal fuse kit" replacement.
You saved me $90 at least. I watched several videos and almost ordered an entire new board. Instead I found the fuse as you suggested for about $10. Worked like a charm. Thanks!
So glad it worked for you. Thank you for commenting and confirming for other people how easy this is to fix yourself. Have a great rest of the day. Make sure you like the video and subscribe :-)
Good video to watch before service tech arrives. I am not comfortable working with electricity. When the service person comes, I will understand the possible problems and costs. I appreciate the help!
Glad you found the video informative….hopefully it will validate what the technician finds. Expect a charge for troubleshooting the issues, cost for the parts needed (likely replacement of the board) and labour as well. Hopefully it’s a minor repair. Keep me posted.
Thanks Danny! This video saved me a big repair bill! Everything in your video was exactly the issues my dishwasher was having, including the pistachio shell and the fuse. GREAT VIDEO!!
Thanks for the great video. Very thorough and clear instructions. Professionally done. I had the same dishwasher and the same problem. I spent about of one-tenth of the money needed to call a repairman on the order of the thermal fuse. Following every step shown in the video, I did the maintenance cleaning, opened the compartment for the motherboard, replaced the thermal fuse. It is now working as before. BTW, I ordered the part from a local store and picked it up the same day. Thanks again Danny Jose!
Wow! That’s fantastic! Glad the video helped! Thank you so much for taking the time to writing this comment. Really appreciate it. Have a great rest of the week!
This video is great! I was able to replace the fuse myself easily. I also appreciate the advice to clean out the grinder. I took the extra time to do that and found a cherry pit, some glass, ceramic etc. The instructions are very easy to follow! Thank you!
@@DDIY-Guy The same fuse blew again for me. I have another one on order and I will clean out the grinder again. If I don't find anything in the grinder could it be something else down the line? Your video is so easy and clear!!! Thank you again!
It could be just the type of fuse you got. Someone else suggested that you also replace the wires that come with the fuse you ordered. That might help carry the electrical load better. Let me know how it goes. It might just be by chance that it blew so shortly after....mine has been working since I first replaced it. Anyway, it’s good that the fuse blows, it means it’s doing it’s job.
At 8:45 into the video - two black relays on the right side of the board. One of mine had blown and burned a bit of the surrounding circuit board. $900 for a new dishwasher vs $150 for a used circuit board. BUT - - I was able to track down one of the relays online for $4! Removed the damaged one, soldered the new one in, and my dishwasher actually worked!
That is amazing!!! I’ve had this dishwasher for about 10 years now and still getting my dishes cleaned. It’s had it’s fair share of problems but if you are willing to fix it yourself....it will last you for a very long time. Glad to hear yours as new life :-) have a great week! Thanks for commenting!
@@DDIY-Guy I am on a mission to make my dishwasher last TWENTY YEARS...only four more years to go! It's videos like this that have helped me get it to last this long.
That’s amazing! I hope my dishwasher last that long too. I've learn other fixes on youtube as well so I too appreciate these types of videos and glad to give back as well. cheers!
This is by far the best done video and I have been able to take apart and clean my dishwasher as well as diagnose a blown fuse in the control panel. Thanks so much!
Thanks Danny! Your instructions were very useful. Some broken glass was the culprit for me. The experience also gave me an excuse to finally buy a shop vac!
So glad it was helpful and congrats on finally getting a shop vac....it’s amazing how much I use mine for water spills, dirty stuff that I don’t want to use my regular vacuum for and other messy stuff. Thank you for commenting and subscribing to the channel! Have a fantastic weekend!
Thank you! just spent like an hour going through this for the first time because we spent a lot of time cleaning. Your video made this 100% possible (both the old and the new). Thanks for making this!!!
Danny, thank you for taking the time to put together a very well thought out and easy to follow process to fix the issue , you save me a great deal of hassle and money ! Very grateful!
Video was def helpful, used Kitchen aid ref # for fuse model replacement and found on Amazon for $9.00 waiting on part to complete repair (btw my dishwasher is 13 yrs old and only had to replace chopper 2 times)
Ok...I'm not a repair man, but my DW went dead...I will follow up with a feedback once I follow these step. But I would like to add that the instructor explanation was very clear. Excellent.
Thabk you for your comment and feedback. I hope it works for you and your dishwasher functions again. Please let my know how it turns out. Best wishes.
Thank you for responding...I know that my question is out of my scope of practice, but aside from my professional responsibilities as an author, speaker...etc...I've always told people that "NEVER OWN WHAT YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO FIX" and I'm going to do just that. Thanks brother....Keep up the great work
Thank you so much. Did exactly what you did and it'd worked again. Saved me 100's of dollars 💸. But now it stops running mid cycle almost like you hit pause. If not one thing it's another. Thanks a million
Glad it worked for you. If it stopped mid cycle, try turning off the power at the breaker for it and reboot your washer. If that didn’t work, there might be something wrong with the board.
Many thanks, Danny! While I agree with ThePatriotsBrother, your video gave me a great place to begin diagnostics of my dead touchpad. SECOND TIP is another RU-vid instruction: With door open, disconnect from control board the power connector and both touch pad connectors. Wait 7 seconds, then close door. If pump begins drain cycle, your control board is OK! After this step, my touchpad came on again and all is good! Maybe this reset the control board?? THIRD (and it would be easy to first try this): My model is a 12 year-old KUDS30FXSS3. The repair sheet inside the toe-kick apron also describes a UI (User Interface) test: with all connectors connected, press any 3 touchpad buttons sequentially 3 times in a row. If UI is OK, all buttons/lights will simultaneously light up. (If less than all light up, there is an error code descriptor.)
Great video!! Everything was explained perfectly and so easy to follow. I really appreciate that you included cleaning out the grinder area to avoid another blown fuse. We were able to fix part and clean out dishwasher. We found fruit nuts and a long skinny piece of glass under the grinder. Part was only 8$ on Amazon. Thank you for the help.
Great tutorial, not only was it my fuse that blew, but there was gunk all inside that needed cleaning, and ceramic bits in the grinder from a broken bowl. I replaced the grinder as well.
Awesome. Glad to hear you got it all working again. Make sure you clean out your filter/grinder once every couple of months to keep you dishwasher cleaning like new. Have a great rest of the week and thanks for commenting!
I guess you do a good job of rinsing the dishes before you put it in the dishwasher. I tend to find things like cherry seeds, broken plastics, pieces of glass, every couple of months :-)
@@DDIY-Guy Hi Danny, my dishwasher stopped again. I ran it once, it cleaned really well, but didn't drain. I pushed the cancel/drain button and it drained. I tried running it again on light wash. It didn't drain and now it doesn't start. I just replaced the grinder and the fuse when it wasn't working before and there hasn't been any junk in there to get clogged. Any idea what it could be??? PS: I don't have a sink disposal.
it sounds like a part of the board might be blown. if you check the board that you replaced the fuse with, disconnect all the wires and pop out the board. Look at the underside and see if there are any burn marks.
Credit where credit is due...thank you so much for making this video! I was able to complete the repair myself for the cost of the fuse. Same exact problem right down to the pistachio shells. Thank you again!
If you’re experiencing the same issue but the dude provided continuity should I consider the board? Unit is not turning on/ responding to commands but is getting power
Danny, excellent video. I had the exact same issue and replacing the fuse solved the problem. Cleaning the innards was a great suggestion as well. Very well done.
Nice instruction. We clean the bottom of the dishwasher. Then reassembled. Tested the fuse by using a paper clip and we got lights. replaced the fuse and got lights. First test run was good the I just looked in the dishwasher and there is water at the bottom and no lights so I think we blew the fuse again. I guess we need to check the drain motor or hose.
Thank you thank you thank you! My dishwasher had the exact same problem and if I had just fixed the fuse it would have happened again. (My dishwasher had the same issue with obstructions/plastic in the drain.) Up and running again thanks to your video. 👍👍👍👍👍
Hello im just about to tear apart my dishwasher but would really like to know what that cable is called to bypass the fuse to test if its actually the fuse that blown. Great video by the way awesome detail and thorough tutorial. Thanks
Hey I know you did it ages ago but I just used to fix my dishwasher, and if it hods up saved me $1000 as we were gonna replace! Either way we’ll done. Thanks
This got my dishwasher going, however, the unit stopped working again after one run. I guess the fuse is blowing for some reason further down the line (I ran it without heat/dry, so perhaps that rules out the heating element). Turbidity sensor? The motor gets a bit loud so maybe it is failing. I also just switched out the fuse as opposed to splicing in the wire kit, and some websites say not to skip that step, but the wires that come with it are only about 8" long so that just seems like splicing for the sake of splicing. Anyway, this is a great video and it seems to have been a permanent fix for many. Thanks for Posting!
i remember always to take the fuse out of the circuit when testing for shorts or rather continuity when i was testing laptops. i believe it has something to do with if its still connected to other things it could pick up some funky stuff
This was a great video!! So easy to understand! But what if it isn’t the fuse? I didn’t have jumper cables, but used a multimeter to test the fuse, and it looks like there was good contintuity .... so what’s next?
If there is no power at all, disassemble the control board and see if there are any burn marks....if so, you might be able to replace it....you can purchase a new one from Amazon.
@@DDIY-Guy Crazy, there was a big piece of glass stuck. The part out tutorial was perfect. Thanks so much for the video, saved me tons of time and money.
Thank you so much! I was able to fix my dishwasher thanks to your video! I have the exact same model. However, the cycles controls to the left are not working (Heave Duty / Normal / Rinse Only. the lights are out. Any thoughts on how to fix that?? I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge! Blessings, Andres.
Our motherboard caught on fire. In looking into this, I found that KitchenAid and Whirlpool (parent company) have a history of this problem. There was even a class-action lawsuit a few years ago.
I can visualize calls to repair technician....i tried to take my dishwasher apart to fix it and now i don’t know how to put it back together. My advice is stop buying pistachios in the shell. Thanks for the video. Excellent instructions.
You are right.....no more hard shell nuts and cherries! They are the common culprits for clogged filter and grinders. You can also tell everyone to rinse their dishes before putting it in the dishwasher. Anyway, thanks for commenting. Have a great rest of the week.
Thank you for sharing this tutorial! You saved me a tech visit and potentially buying a new dishwasher all for a $10 piece that blew. Good karma coming your way🙌🏼
Danny!!! Awesome video. My issue was the same. And after watching the video I decided to dismantle the filter assembly and clean the washer. Great info and you have another subscriber Wish we could have done a video on my jackshaft door installation
Great video and tutorial. I am having a slight different issue . The 4 hr delay light won’t turn on. When i am resetting the unit i see that it does turn on. Any any idea where to look on the board for this issue ? Otherwise the unit is fully working. Thanks in advance.
if you tried all the standard reset procedures and turned off and on the breakers for it, then check the main board and see if there are any blown contacts on it.
Thank you Danny! you are the best at showing and explainig how to repair my dish washer. your instructions were very precise . please keep your videos coming
Good video. The fuse was just $9.50 in Amazon. Now the dishwasher runs for a while and shuts down with no power and after 20-25 minutes the power is back on and the light is flashing. It stops midway in the rinse cycle. I assumed the drain motor is not working. But once the power is back on (on its own) I hit cancel and the water completely. Cant figure out the problem
Check the bottom of your dishwasher where the water spout is located at the bottom front right corner. Sometimes a utensil will get stuck under it and will stop the cycle mid way.
DDIY GUY Danny Jose - Thanks for your quick response. No luck with that. It’s clear Since my message I ran another cycle. It ran for 20 minutes then shut down. All lights off and nothing will work. I waited 20 minutes, lights came on and start was blinking. Hit start and the cycle continued. Died again after 20 minutes. Came back alive in 15-20 minutes and when I hit the flashing start it completed the whole cycle with the cycle complete light in the end. Seems like something in the circuit Is heating up and trips. Once it cools it ready to start again. Do you think it’s the control board or is there a thermal switch? Thanks for your reply and help.
It might be just the fuse you got. You might want to order another one...this is the version I got from amazon. It’s got really good reviews but it costs $35. www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B005B489US/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=15121&creative=330641&creativeASIN=B005B489US&linkCode=as2&tag=ddiydannyjose-20&linkId=aec3a00a3c1535c3b4f8881ce7c10e95 Also, make sure you install it with the wires it came with if you can. Those wire are better suited for that fuse.
Great video! Although I do have one suggestion.. the lighting could be brighter. It was difficult to see detail of exactly what you were doing bc it was too dark and had some shadowing from your arms I think... Otherwise I'm going to follow your instructions thank you!
Excellent video, thank you. I went step by step and did not find any obvious objects in the grinder that could have overheated and blocked operation. I tested the dishwasher fuse and it was good. I turned on power after having already reset the breaker box house panel fuse and voila, dishwasher worked. But now the question is why? If the fuse inside dishwasher was good and the breaker in house breaker box panel was not tripped and even after resetting, why did washer start working, just by cleaning grinder and taking off door panel to test dishwasher fuse...not complaining but still a mystery currently
sounds like you got lucky and didn’t blow the fuse with a sudden power surge. The dishwasher might have just powered off automatically and just needed a power restart. anyway, glad it all worked out for you.
My dishwasher decided to give out on me and died completely. Thinking about doing this but was wondering what the little jumper cable you have is called or where can I find that? Thanks for your help!
Yeah. I did it myself. Cost me about $15.00 AFTER paying repair person $112 for service call who then wanted another $120 for the fuse! Wished I would have seen your video earlier. Thank you.
@@DDIY-Guy Unfortunately, I ran a cleaning cycle and apparently overheated and blew the fuse again and before it drains! Any idea what might be causing it to overheat???
Hi! Not sure if you can answer this, but this video was so helpful, figured I'd ask! So this fix worked perfectly for about 5 weeks, it went off again, we got a new fuse. Then about 4-5 weeks later...it appeared the fuse blew again...but this time, while waiting for a new fuse to be shipped...the power (which definitely was NOT coming on), just came back on after about 24 hours. This has now happened 5-6 times. Except now it won't finish a cycle. The weird thing is, it must be getting pretty close to being done, because the only reason we are realizing it wasn't finished is that there is water pooled up. But if I wait that 24 hrs, the power will restore, and I can run a rinse cycle, and everything drains no problem. Any clues what to look at? thank you so much for any input :)
Try looking at the water sprays at the bottom front corner. Sometimes a utensil gets stuck underneath it and it prevents the cycle from running completely. If it’s not that then look at the circuit board where the fuse blew and check for burns. There might have damaged the board. In that case, you might have to replace the whole board.
Once I removed my tripped fuse in my Kenmore 665 (part # W10195528), I used a cheap ($8) non-contact voltmeter to test the fuse wires for voltage after turning on the dishwasher breaker on my electrical panel. When the left side fuse wire lit up, I knew it was probably the fuse. I did buy a replacement wire set on Amazon (next day delivery) by using the part number above and will do my best to install the wires and fuse if possible, based on the Kenmore guy who posted below. 😊
I got another 3 years out of and the board blew….but this time it was not repairable since I couldn’t find a replacement board. So I ended up buying a new dishwasher finally.
HELP! Great video! Everything worked except when I put the 4 legged sprayer back on. I hold it, tighten the middle, and when it spins it wobbles ALOT and hits the back part you removed during the earlier steps. Re did the back part and verified its in place (by placing top rack back in and watching the top tub fit into the whole for upper water). Taken it out and redid it a few times but worried now I am going to strip the plastic piece. Thoughts???
I had a no power and it was not the fuse ... always check the wire nuts in the junction box at the front lower corner of the unit - that fixed my problem after tightening the wire nuts.
DDIY GUY Danny Jose bottom right, you should see a 12ga power supply going in (usually yellow) from inside that 3 wires come out black white and copper. The black and white wire nut to black and white of dishhwasher
Great video. But now I need a part that I can not find in any of the part listings. It is the plastic part that goes up the back of the dishwasher. Any help will be appreciated
Danny - I followed your directions and was able to fix the dishwasher. The new fuse blew again after one use so I am thinking there’s something else wrong. How do I go about figuring that out? Thanks
It might have been due to the quality of fuse you bought….if it’s not too costly, maybe get another brand of fuse. If it still blows, then there might be a bigger issue with the control board….it that case, it’s hard to find a replacement board, plus it’s expensive. At that point, it might just be best to get a new dishwasher :-(
My dishwasher just stopped working completely no power no light no nothing , we had a couple power outages today I wonder if the fuse the issue, I checked everything else
Great video and well explained. Replaced the thermal fuse (non-oem) and my Kitchenaid KUDL03FVSS3 is working again without heat. Now when the door is opened mid cycle, it doesn't stop the dishwasher. Any clues? Is the thermal fuse a bad one or did I mess-up the door switch when the door was reinstalled?
pwekowiewks it could be when the fuse blew, it might have damaged the board. Check to see if there are any burn marks around the fuse area. If it is damaged, then, you might have to replace the whole board. The other potential reason could be when you put the door panel back together. Maybe disassemble it again and make sure everything is done properly, especially the top part where the lock hinge goes.
@@DDIY-Guy Ran a full wash cycle as expected. Ordered an OEM fuse and will also check the door switch when replacing that. Don't recall any burnt marks anywhere, hoping it's not control board.
@@DDIY-Guy Finally have an operational dishwasher and replaced these parts in sequence. 1. Thermal Fuse, 2. Door Switch, 3. Heating Element, 4. High Limit thermostat.Total cost was about $80 and took about 4-5hrs in total labor while working slowly. Weird that door switch was broken in the process and appears totally unrelated. Great satisfaction to save a good dishwasher from landfill. It's not only the $$ saved, but also the DIY satisfaction.
Wow! That’s fantastic! You should have video taped it as well and posted on RU-vid :-). Great job! Glad it all worked for you and it was another successful DIY story. Thank you for sharing. Have a fantastic rest of the week!
$40-$50 for a fuse? that's crazy. Anyway, were you curious about the underlying cause of the current overload in the first place? We have shrimps shell in the sump. My family keeps thinking that the dishwasher is some sort of magic box because of the stuff I find in there and the very badly washed plates because of the way they were arranged in the rack. I call it the non-magic box for their benefit now.
Ya, I have the same problem with my family and especially when we have a party at our house, people just put dishes in the rack in random places and forget to rinse or scrape of their plate. The worst is scoops of peanut butter when they are baking...that stuff clogs the filter....best to wipe it off with paper towel first. I try to clean it the washer every 3 months....keeps it running like new. As for the fuse being blown....after I replaced it it’s been working great...and that was about 2 years ago.
