I am surprised Bushcats are not much more popular. Most concerns I've seen about parts and tech support over the long haul are minor. How hard is it to get aluminum tubing, cabling, nuts/bolts, Rotax parts, etc? WHEN WILL WE SEE FOLDING WINGS, even as an option? With hangar availabity and pricing at a premium, this can be a key feature.

@ExperimentalAircraftChannel
@ExperimentalAircraftChannel 3 года назад
Thank You for saying hi! I honestly don't know what other engine options would be available. Forward of the firewall I think would be rather critical of these as the empty weight is around 700lbs-750lbs I believe. If you take a close look at the engine to firewall space with the current Rotax 912ULS 100HP option, you will find that it is mounted nearly against the firewall. Meaning if you were to hang a HEAVIER engine on the nose... there is NO ROOM to move the engine "AFT" to compensate for weight. Yes... you can add ballast to the tail to some degree but that is a very narrow envelope before it affects the handling and flight characteristics. Just something to consider.

The wing material is it like ultralights or hang gliders I know the material on those aircraft has a time limit like 10 years then it's very costly to replace it all. The advantage is not having to spend the 100's hours labor needed for cloth, or high cost of ortex shrink on cover. Looking at their US dealer cost is about $86k ready to fly with the 912ULS that's a great price. Useful weight is 613lbs that's not bad for two seater haul most guys even if both push 250 each. Looked for accidents online none that I could find were fatal couple of nose overs, one guy in Australia hit terrain while landing was the most serious injurie, and one other who landed in a river with floats wind gust nosed over to the left. Like your channel you always find the aircraft that regular people can afford. I see lot of reviews of aircraft reality is most can't afford 100k plus airplane. $86k is still lot of money but it's somewhat doable for most with ongoing maintenance.

@@ExperimentalAircraftChannel Recently I've been training on a quicksilver to get my LSA. I know it's not the same as a real ppl, but it's what I can do on my budget right now. As my current mission is really just doing touch and goes and air-work, and learning to fly an airplane at all, it's been fun and helped me get my fundamentals down. I obviously hope to get my PPL afterwards, and was looking at a 150 or 152, but these bush planes just look like so much fun. I know this is a stupid question, but if you were to tell someone about the major difference between a modern bush ELSA like this, and an older 152, what would drive someone to spend the extra cash on a newer plane like this? Thanks =)

@mhilderbrand7693 3 года назад
@@jamesbarros950 I have owned several airplanes, built 3 in the experimental category and working on another. I have also owned an older Cherokee (for a brief period). Depending on your mission, I feel experimental is the only way to go! For me, this includes mostly local flights with the occasional cross-country. If you can build the plane yourself,in the experimental amateur -built category, you can perform your own annual inspections. This can save you a lot of money! You will also know your airplane inside and out! My experience, with the Cherokee, was something was ALWAYS breaking down (everything is older). Then you had to find a mechanic worth a darn. I consider my standards as medium-to low-high. The mechanics I found, their standards seem low-medium,at best (although never anything unsafe). The fun-factor is also there! Typically, the power to weight ratio for the light sport type aircraft just make them fun to fly! The downside is they are lighter aircraft, and more prone to turbulence. It all depends on your mission and $$$, but I will never own anything but experimental.

Is engine availability an issue for this plane at this time?
@Micah1Powell
@Micah1Powell 3 года назад
There is one of these at a nearby airport to mine. Definitely has some ramp appeal! One issue I see with the way that is set up is that the flap handle and the stick are both in the center which means you would have to reach across yourself to lower/raise flaps while you are flying. I'm assuming there is a dual center stick option which would fix that.
@ExperimentalAircraftChannel
@ExperimentalAircraftChannel 3 года назад
@Micah Powell I see your point. There are several aircraft that challenge the "ergonomics" of some typical thoughts on that. There is always a trade off it seem. Having the stick in the center of the airframe allows ease of access to simply slide your butt into the seat. Adding dual sticks would definitely take that feature away. Maybe they are just a big fan of "symmetry." :-) Thank You for watching and supporting here! We appreciate YOU!

Interesting. It's surprisingly heavy for a fabric bird. My all metal LSA is a full person lighter. Maybe there is some weight in bush wheels but still. It sort of underlines my belief that just a glider style monocoque composite body is both the simplest, lightest and most aerodynamic construction so it really should be possible to make a sleek fast bird also be a stol plane by virtue of minimal weight. That could be a powerful combination, maybe even make it a waterbird with some foils.

While certainly an attractive and sporty looking aircraft, (I really like the look and flow of the cowling as well as many of fhe slick cockpit control features.) the bolt together aluminum airframe "appears" a little too "ultralight" to be rugged enough for the more aggressive bush landings of, say, the more mountainous backcountry of Idaho and surrounding areas. Of course, this is only supposition as all others in this class seem to be welded 4130 steel, Also how fairs the sail cloth vs. doped fabric and paint under UV assault, overall lifespan, etc.? Then there is the grove gear vs. cabane debate. I can see where it would, pardon the low hanging fruit, "shine" in the Florida sun where there are no mountains. Just thinking out loud, as it were.
@HECTORFARRA
@HECTORFARRA 2 года назад

Coming from a family of welders and myself a military pilot, welds break/crack easier under rough treatment than properly selected bolt and nut attachment systems. Not many welds on an AH64 Apache Attack helicopter - mostly rivets and locknut/bolt/cotter key for some highly stressed/ pounded components during training and combat. And competition sail material is as tough as it gets. My son has sailed in some nasty winds around the world, and those sails stand up to direct impact high winds, aerodynamic flow is exponentially less stressful

I see they addressed the poorly designed nosewheel design which was very weak and if you flew with Spats, its impossible to inspect the welds (where they always used to crack) without removing the spats entirely. Two variants of the nose wheel "suspension" were made one with springs situated inside the cabin (the better of the two!) and another with a doughnut style rubber ring situated int he same place - the later is much harder and transferred more load into the nose-wheel, making it that much more prone to cracking (fatigue) - great to see that this has been replaced with a much better design! The previous old, cut, weld, and fold over another piece of steel plate to re-weld design that this was made from seemed to be a short cut approach. The rest of the plane is great, easy to fly, handles well, good on fuel, a little slow at cruise but acceptable for a bushplane. The first releases called the Cheetah had horrible drum brakes, and the tires never sat flat on the ground, there was always a camber issue where the tires wore on the outsides. I was the first to replace the brakes in South Africa ( I hangar at the same airfield as Skyreach) to a disc brake model, and i upgraded a total of 7 planes, before Skyreach purchased the black max brakes for the bushcat. A tip (if the newest bushcat doesnt have this done already) is to replace the plastic brake line with steel lines inside the cockpit, it gives better brake feel and less spongy compression to the hand brake lever when doing so. Leave the plastic line outside the plane, so you can visibly inspect the line for air bubbles, and colour of the fluid etc. A great, easy to fly, robust plane (except the nose-wheel) plenty fun to fly, and can be flown long distances with ease, and nice and comfortable on a long flight. Nice large cabin inside too. Doors can be removed for kicking out a meat bomb (sky diver) should you want to do this -- i have done this at a fly in, and its great flying with the doors off on a hot day. Max suggested speed with doors off is 60mph, and the zips at the rear on the sides of the Fuselage need to be opened when doing so.... Nice video.

What is the reason that the tail surfaces were enlarged? The company rep was a bit short on details on that. I would guess there were stability issues or maybe slow flight control issues.

this looks like a great Zenith stile aircraft but even as a tail dragger, I just am not a fan of those center counsel Y shaped sticks or that air rest Throtal. I see the draw, but its just nit for me. I'm more into a center stick with left hand throttle on a tandem seating. this is a great aircraft and I can defiantly see the draw.

Yep, this thing looks like tons of fun but I also am not too fond of a center stick and especially when your flap lever is also in the center.

You either reach across or let go of the stick to adjust the flaps, and trim. Doesn’t seem very ergonomic but I could be missing something.
@LiveLNXgaming
@LiveLNXgaming 3 года назад
that's the main reason I like a center stick (or yoke but I like stick controls). you can always have a hand on the flight control. for aircraft that fly mainly by autopilot I understand the appeal of keeping your legs and space in front of you clear. but I don't like the idea of having to let go if the main control. I know it's in reality not that big of a deal, its just a psychological thing for me. I see why its nice, but thats the main reason I'm not considering a Zenith.

I once looked at a Wittman Tailwind for sale. On paper it was my favorite experimental aircraft. I sat in it and my knees hit the fuel tank under the panel. At 5'8 I didn't have hardly legroom in a tail dragger with a 55+ mph stall speed with my knees hitting its fuel tank 😳 The fuel could make a huge difference in CG as well! Having the fuel tanks behind the pilot in a crash is way better than flying a Wittman tailwind with the fuel in your lap in a tiny tail dragger with a high stall speed any day! 😂🤣😅😆 *-James Bond*
