Why thank you. Given the loco was only hauling a light load (around 220T) I was fortunate to be able get any dynamic brake action. In the near future I should be able to film some more videos like this one. All going well I'll be filming my next cab ride video sometime within the next two months, so stay tuned. I'm pleased to say I finally have a decent GoPro so the footage shouldn't be as shaky as this footage.
Hi, this brings back good memories from my own trips through the Pass, The train from Picton to Christchurch never disappoints, I can't think of another train ride where its possible to see dolphins playing in the surf without leaving your seat. Thanks for sharing.
@@petermauderli Ahh right. It is quite impressive what the rebuild team have achieved along the coast through Kaikoura isn't it. There will be photo's and probably video's around the place if you haven't already seen what has been achieved. Our rail network is sadly a shadow of it's former self, but with a bit of luck our current Labour government will remain in power long enough to allow the remaining network to continue to be revitalized. They will hopefully also get rid of the current directors of KiwiRail, and make the railways a government department again. The current focus on the running KiwiRail as a business is not doing rail in this country any favours.
It is indeed. The view as the train came down the hill is really nice isn't it. I've been lucky to travel on trains all around the country, even on freight only lines. The scenery really is stunning in so many places. I feel quite privileged to live here.
I segued from a vid re the early steam crane at a steam train museum/line in NZ to this...wonderful work by the YT algorithm... and you are now at 39.1k views
Excellent. Thank you very much for watching. The algorithm does work in mysterious ways. It seems that once this video reached 10k the algorithm went 'Ok this video is doing well, I'll do all I can to promote it'. Since it did funnily enough the view count has gone through the roof. And suddenly about a hundred new subs turned up.
21K, wow 😲 I guess the algorithm is promoting this video at the moment huh. Thank you to all of you that have watched, commented, subscribed, liked, and even disliked this video. I have a bunch of clips, and a few longer video's in various stages of editing that will be up on the channel at some point in the next couple of months. As for anymore cab ride video's I will have more at some point. I'm hoping to film the next one at some stage this year.
Nice video, I love riding the "Coastal Pacific". I'm hoping to visit NZ in Feb/March next year, but I'm not sure whether the quake damage will be repaired for trains to be running between Picton and Christchurch by then.
Thanks. I very much doubt the line will be fixed by then unfortunately. From what I've heard recently it could be anywhere from 8 months to 2 years before the line is reopened, that timeline really depends on what state the geologists find the tunnels and the rest of the line in. The damage is immense.
I have looked at some of the photos on the internet showing the cliffs near Kaikoura, the slides are enormous, can't help thinking it may be impossible to stabilize them, leading to the use of more avalanche shelters, the view from the train will be quite different when the railway and road are reopened.
Now there's an idea. That would certainly would be a resonably quick fix. By the way I've just found out the Coastal is cancelled for the rest of the season. The carriages are going to be deployed elsewhere.
It's a pity the Coastal Pacific will not be running when I visit, it will be interesting to see where they redeploy the carriages, maybe an experimental service to Dunedin?
Thank you for watching this mostly wobbly mess haha. Feel free to check out some of my other videos. I have another cab ride video of sorts here:- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2cE5DcVflTk.html (I'll be adding an end card to this video with that video suggestion when I have time.)
Hey, what's the normal running speed on the main and gentle bendy sections? And then when you can hear the wheels grindingn how much have you slowed down?
I'm not a driver, yet. And I'm not at all familiar with the area so I couldn't tell you what the normal running speed is. Based on that speed sign on the right about a minute in I would say the limit is around 80-90km/h. As for the wheel grinding that is a 40-45km/h (depending on which direction you're going in) corner by the first underpass. Most of the way down the other side of the pass the limit is 40km/h. I hope that helps.
As beautiful as cab videos are, why don't you consider using a portable vehicle dash-cam next time, as that way - you'll avoid the sway effects of manually holding a video /cellphone camera, plus you won't kill your arms in the process (another benefit is that most good dashcams now, record upwards of an hour or more on the SD cards available, thus a 14 minute hand held swaying clip could become a crystal clear steady hour movie..?) By portable - I mean one where you use a higher amp/hour discharge type - deep-cell AGM battery - instead of a car's battery / cig lighter plug, just in case the train / or loco that you are CAB recording from, doesn't have a suitable 12v DC cig socket available.
Fair comment. Like I should have said this cab ride wasn't planned at all. I was just lucky. So all I had on me that day was a pretty cheap camera. If I go on another trip at some stage I'll hopefully be better equipped. I like the idea, will keep it in mind.
Palmerston north of the cab driver see that on way trips kiwirail trains napier to palmerston north line way think about this were driver freight train from Hawke's bay kiwirail 🇳🇿❤
