This is the original version of this railway classic which has no voice over, just the delight of classic steam locomotives and the wonderful sound that you get with them. As far as I know, this classic film isn't available on DVD or Blu-Ray, however, if it is feel free to link in the comments where you can purchase it - official sites only please. Here are the words that were on the back of the VHS video:
The Great Western Experience is a rather special video cassette, for the dedicated enthusiast and for anyone with an affection for the old steam railway. It's for the first time, a professional broadcast production team has set out to recreate the reality of the Great Western Railway in its heyday, shot on the most modern and sophisticated equipment and to the highest technical standards. Although the material is specially recorded today, it still provides a view of railway working as it really was, which is difficult to see on the visit to even the best of the preserved railways. There is no superficial television treatment, as the objective throughout has been to recapture all the smallest details of the often forgotten aspects of a way of life which has been so recently lost but which reawakens so many happy memories: everything from branch line goods to main-line expresses, from loco sheds to shunting yards, from signal boxes to coaling stages, from token-exchanges to turntables....it's all here, so take your seat for an hour of the colours, the sites and the sounds that go to make up - The Great Western Experience.

@@Tarantara. thanks for the info Mark. It's great material really and captures the atmosphere beautifully. It'd be great to have the final film all remastered and upscaled to HD standards

This is a lovely video I used to own a copy & watched it a few times over. Full of atmosphere and surprisingly enough I bought it from a shop in Richmond Yorkshire for a £1 sometime around the early nineties believe it or not. That was a pound well spent.

Believe it or not I actually prefer the version with the commentary. There’s some really interesting stuff about the design and development of the different locomotives. This version is great to though.

33:30 Tank Engine 1466 starred as an armoured train, in a battle scene in the 1972 movie “Young Winston”. Well worth a watch. There’s also a 9F in another action scene.
