Kizazi Moto Generation Fire! Afrofuturism By Disney That Misses More Then It Hit's. Reaction Review

This is what i suppose you might call "honest diversity" rather then the forced variant usually favored by the woke employees over at Disney. And Kizazi Moto Generation Fire does succeed here and there in bringing it's African origins to the fore but far to often it fails to distinguish itself

"there is no reason for their conflict, except hey, you look weird." this may come as a shock to some people, but a lot of cultures in africa are racist as hell XD They've literally waged entire wars for no other reason than because "them other people are bad."

What I think is funny, and a bit sad, is that from a position of global dominance when white people took over, before our eventual fall (everyone does fall from this position eventually) we created and promoted the entire philosophy of tolerance and acceptance and created the entire situation for this to happen. Ironically somehow the guys who decided to try and end racism, have become the stock villains and things like this, without being given any credit for the entire idea. Almost every racial portrayal comes down to "whites think they are superior and treat others badly" yet arguably should be treated as the most accepting people on the planet for being the only ones to open these kind of doors by saying they shouldn't be in charge based on genetics when they were in a position to try and force that rather than the opposite. In the meantime there are political efforts to turn everyone against white people as the bad guys, as opposed to them being the peacemakers, while we ignore all the horrible racism, slavery, and genocide going on by other groups when whites are not involved. Different African groups do not consider themselves part of some "black unity" like we call them all "black" here. Hispanics and Blacks have just as much history as whites and blacks. Asians have a massive history of Xenophobia which you can even see in places like Japan and especially China today,, and that includes against other people we whites would just term generally "Asian". I mean look at what Japan did in China during WW II, and there is a lot of bad blood over it today, yet we are supposed to just pretend that wasn't a think because whites are "da evil". I've long felt right now if we want this whole diversity and equality thing to work we need to put as much, or more, attention on non-white vs. non-white racism. Especially seeing as globally speaking whites are the actual numerical minority compared to blacks, asians (especially asians), and other groups. This is where a lot of the real problems actually lie, and these conflicts are of course reflected in melting pots like the US as people bring those ideas here and we ignore them just because for a few decades some guys wore white sheets on their heads and attacked black people due to being upset their side lost a war on this subject. Casual racism against whites is also something that does need to be addressed, though I do understand why due to political intertia that can't happen instantly. I for example would argue Black History Month should have at least two days of every week dedicated to "be thankful for white people" because without us, they would not be in a position to have this month, their freedom being given, not taken or earned, and nothing else they did here would have happened without that gift. It would spin this in a more positive direction than just a month about screaming about past oppression in a way that always missed the point that the people doing it stopped doing it because they decided on their own it was wrong.

9:00 "The African Gods abandoned Africa." That's actually a very common theme in many African religions, especially West African ones like the Yoruba. The most powerful creator gods have essentially abandoned their creations, or have bigger priorities. Either way, your prayers to them will not be heard. Instead you pray to the lesser deities or spirits, like the Orishas, who still pay attention to humans. In some cases, there may be a single messenger god like Eshu, who is the only one who can relay messages to the other gods, and who will often distort those messages for his own ends. Another common African theme is that the creator gods are imperfect, and thus created flawed things, including humanity. One story says one of the lesser gods, Obtala, was tasked with creating humans, but got drunk and screwed it up. Now humans can die, be deformed, and be crippled all because some deity couldn't stay sober.

Quite few years ago now, I was doing research into African folklore while crafting a region of my homebrew fantasy setting. I found that a common through-line of sub-Saharan Africa is the idea that the gods had turned their backs on mortal man. Exactly why varies from culture to culture, but the gist was generally that the gods weren't mad: they were just very disappointed. So the people turned to the spirits of their ancestors for guidance. Knowing that explains the direction some of these shorts take quite well.
@derpnip

While only at 21 minutes upon writing this, your vid sounds like "Wouldn't these be better if they were written the way I like(muh Western standards with standards based on a hundred or so years of film making)" instead of "Ah so these are some of the concepts they may like to focus on as people given Disney budget" I hope maybe you give them a break but I doubt 20 mins is enough time to change. Regardless, no one cares that something is set in Africa. That’s not the problem. The problem is literally forced diversity, especially in places where it logically doesn’t belong, like movies and shows set in any era (or fantasy equivalent) before easy long-distance travel.

You're not the target audience, though. And yes, European fantasy should be whatever the authors create if it's homogeniously white, so be it. If it has a bit of diversity here and there, so be it again. The author decides.

I remember a Vice journo asking Wakaliwood in Uganda why they make crude, hyperviolent action movies when they've experienced so much war themselves, and being met with bemused expressions and a general statement of "we like The Matrix and Terminator". @@FeedMeMister Because Africans aren't very different from anyone else in the world like many seem to think they are. They still enjoy many of the same things we enjoy, so obviously they are going to want to make stories that are similar to what they like. You and the other guy might want to watch animated shorts based on African folk lore, but you're assuming that Africans are all obsessed with their traditional folklore as if it's something constantly on their mind. People still believe in their folklore because they're actual religions. So, in the same way that most Christians aren't constantly thinking about the Bible and can also enjoy fantasy and scifi films, people who follow African religions are going to be the same way. Not to mention, MANY Africans are actually Muslim, Christian, and Jewish, and therefore probably don't engage with their traditional religions often. Also, to call this show shallow because it depicts fantasy and scifi settings that are somewhat familiar to you is to really misunderstand the point of the show. It screams like a tourist asking a native to do "native things" because they want to see something "exotic." The show is representing ideas that appeal to the people that created the episodes. And despite the scifi/fantasy appearance, the show does still clearly show themes based on traditional African folklore and cultural standards. Ancestor veneration, gods abandoning mortals, etc.

Because the parts of Africa that have the ability and capacity to produce something like these short films have already been westernized by America specifically, so they barely have any of their own culture left. a lot of the comments mistook what afrofuturism means. First, it's not about Africa being the future of humanity, but rather reimagining African descendents' future but in alternative ways such as if slavery never happened for example. The same way futurism in euro-centric way might be utopia (people living in forest naked like in a transcendental/spiritual way of life) or distopia (Matrix, the hunger games, blade runner...). But it goes much deeper than that like people write full academic papers on it. African history is so intertwined with European one (in a negative way like since the Greeks and Romans) that it is difficult to imagine it without the other. That's why having these stories where they *try* to focus only on the African perspective is very interesting and new, which ofc we westerners would have a harder time to grasp but honestly I welcome it very much. Just the same way early Hollywood, on top of being evidently very problematic in so many ways, had many "rookie" issues, I think we should give more time and resources to the more "marginalized" communities of artists to experiment in ways we don't even know where to start with and see where they can go and bring us to. I look forward to more African and other ethnic artists' works on mainstream media (and hopefully not with too strict of corporate agenda as well).

I'm of two minds on that, yes, it should be encouraged for various cultures to tell their stories I just don't think it should be up to a studio outside of these cultures to do it, as you'll end up bringing in outside influences That also ends up creating a situation where the originating studio may then give up on its own cultural stories to chase a trend, much like in how DC is chasing an anime styling Each can have their fables and mythos, but these 'outside influences' are how you get a western interpretation of a phoenix in a chinese story with the live action mulan
