Klaus Nomi on German show "Na Sowas!" in 1982, hosted by Thomas Gottschalk. Klaus sings a bit of "Mon coeur s'ouvre à ta voix", talks about his music and then performs Total Eclipse.
Gottschalk: For every episode, we need a big overture. Here it is.
Klaus sings
Gottschalk: Ladies and gentlemen, no technical tricks are used here on Na Sowas. That was the real voice of Klaus Nomi, live here in the studio. He sings mezzo soprano, which is rare. This is a real opera voice, but this wasn't enough for him and he was looking for something different. He went to America, where he has had great success. This is not the first time that someone who grew up in Germany has gone overseas to become famous and then returned. Now, please welcome Klaus Nomi!
Klaus: How are you?
Gottschalk: May I give you this?
Klaus: Thank you.
Gottschalk: Please take a seat. This is a real talk show with real talk show seats.
Klaus: Thanks very much. Oh...!
Gottschalk: Oh, your tail is in the way!
Klaus: I have a problem.
Gottschalk: But nice legs too, huh?
Klaus: laughs Thank you.
Gottschalk: Now Klaus....mezzo soprano. This is something very special?
Klaus: Yes.
Gottschalk: Did you learn to sing like this, or does it come to you naturally?
Klaus: I have always sung like this, ever since I was a child.
Gottschalk: And you started off with an opera career but didn't carry on with this, because you wanted something different?
Klaus: Well I always wanted to sing mezzo soprano, but it was a problem for me at school. My teachers were against it.
Gottschalk: They were?
Klaus: Yes, they thought it was something only for women.
Gottschalk: I don't think so. I think if someone has such a wonderful talent then he should use it.
Klaus: Yes, of course.
Gottschalk: But then came New York and you began to sing more rock?
Klaus: Yes, among others. But I still use the classical element as well.
Gottschalk: So you combine both the classical and the rock elements?
Klaus: Yes. Some of the songs on my LP are classic pieces, like the aria, and the song by Henry Purcell.
Gottschalk: And that was from "Samson and Delilah"?
Klaus: Yes.
Gottschalk: By Strauss?
Klaus: laughs No, not quite. Saint-Saens.
Gottschalk: Saint-Saens? My French is not so good. Ok, good. So now we are going to hear the more "rock" side of Klaus Nomi but of course with elements of the mezzo soprano voice. Ok?
Klaus: Yes, of course.
Gottschalk: We look forward to it.
Klaus: I have a present for you.
Gottschalk: A present for me from Klaus Nomi.
Klaus: A Nomi button.
Gottschalk: A Nomi button. I hope I can still take a seat with it...so, Klaus Nomi and "Total Eclipse". Yes? Thank you Klaus. This is great. I think Bio* will be really jealous, at least I hope so. He is already a big name in America, and now we present him here in Germany on Na Sowas with "Total Eclipse".
(*Bio = Alfred Biolek, the presenter of another talk show)

I have recorded tons of opera singers and NONE of them sing in tune, just to let you know. Using tuning software actually ruins everything because they are not rooted in the proper key to begin with. It is crazy. When you have to send your voice up and out so loudly in opera, nobody worries about perfect intonation.

He was definitely outside the bounds of society back then (quite an entertainer before his time). I probably wouldn't have seen the talent back then. But, now, I'm just so intrigued at this point - his operettic range is just so fascinating. Nowadays, I can think of SO MANY theatrical options for his persona. Imagine what he could have done with today's production techniques. Real shame he passed so early to an awful disease. Glad we have the u toob platform to keep him alive.

It's interesting that both Nomi and Nina Hagen had opera in their background (and to some extent in their genre-bending performances). I wish the two had collaborated. I just realized that in a way they're the German equivalent of Freddie Mercury and Kate Bush, another pair of very expressive artists similarly capable of vocal acrobatics and on-stage theatrics. Likewise, we lost the male half of this potential pair to AIDS entirely too soon. I'm glad to see Nomi's work kept alive on RU-vid. In fact, I just subscribed to his (apparently brand-new!) channel. There aren't even 500 subs on it yet (I was #471), and the first video was only posted two weeks ago.

Thomas Gottschalk (the host) was and still is one of the most famous TV hosts in the German speaking region. He long was the host of a very popular show, this show, "Wetten dass..?", where people tried to do stuff and beat records for fun or wired things, before challenges in the web were even born. It was hosted (mostly) in Germany, but also in Switzerland and Austria and all around was a great show with international guests and Gottschalk always was awesome, funny and very kind to each one of them (whatever he personally thought of them). I just love both of them a lot, Nomi for his voice, character and style and Gottschalk for his wits, character, and humor. (I am from Austria btw and watched that show so many times for some years with my family It is sometimes referred to "the biggest TV show in Europe"(Wikipedia and others)!)

Klaus left this world way too soon! To quote Dr. Seuss - "Don't be sad he's gone, be happy he happened."

Now I remember, like it was yesterday, seeing his clips on TV when I was small, I always wondered why I felt a connection between opera and science fiction, now I know - I loved him to bits, the mime make up and the German accent I love since this very day, without knowing who he was, and in my memory I mixed him up with early Kraftwerk - hi strange guy :)

Always a fascinating performer and fiercely intense. I really like this video but I don't see an option for English subtitles. Still very worthwhile and a historical document. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I remember Klaus from years ago in the early 1980s listening to alternative radio stations. I always liked ‘After the Fall’

Si proche de son décès, prestation envoutante, gestuelle unique, voix mieux qu'en studio, paroles avant gardistes d'un génie que la faucheuse a rappelé injustement. Il me manque, fan depuis mes 10 ans

I just "discovered" this artist. He was great, and maybe would do more awesome things. So sad that he died so young... Also, I wish that RU-vid had a translator from German to English... But I guess that's a First World "problem".... God Speed, Klaus! -From a new fan in the US....
