For me, it's one of the rare cases where a pop artist has managed to sing a classic tune to perfection. Klaus Nomi's icy, disembodied voice really gives the impression that he's singing about his own death.
a friend of mine at the 80s, make me know, the klaus Nomi music, I had many songs of him in one cassette, now thanks to RU-vid I can enjoy my self watching the Nomi videos for the first time in my life, and see it in real time theirs amazing performances, NOMI FOREVER........
Klaus started his career when he was 34, and died at 39. Way too soon for such a genius to leave us, seriously, why do the best always go so soon? He had decades of musical talent to provide us with :s
What power art thou Who from below Hast made me rise Unwillingly and slow From beds of everlasting snow See'st thou not how stiff And wondrous old Far unfit to bear the bitter cold I can scarcely move Or draw my breath I can scarcely move Or draw my breath Let me, let me, Let me freeze again Let me, let me Freeze again to death Let me, let me, let me Freeze again to death...
Masterpiece! I think the life of Klaus Nomi is should be a film or a book. It ends tragic (he was one of the first AIDS-patients; nurses would put a plate for his door in the hospital because they were affraid of the virus). But it also has a little boy in Germany listening to Maria Callas & rock. His performances in NY in the 70's and 80's were legendary and even people like David Bowie would come see them. He's a paradise-bird. Good to see/hear the Cold Song here
He may have had damage to his testicles, Roger Barrett. If I am correct, it seems noteworthy that Klaus Nomi not only made the best of things but was brilliant.
@@Sscchhaaff The devil is a made-up concept to help us feel distance from things we dislike about ourselves. I believe Klaus Nomi's originality came from within.
@@Sscchhaaff I find it impossible to argue with the fact that it's all conjecture, so that's my belief. Your beliefs probably suit you, so who am I to disagree?
I never really heard of Klaus before and i am a huge David Bowie fan. I faintly remember seeing one of his videos when i was a child and the big blown out suit somehow burned into my mind been listing to what i can find just amazing stuff truly ahead of its time even by today's standards.
I was 16 when I heard him for the first time an knew than that I wasn´t allone in this world singing like this.... Thank you Klaus Nomi, you have always being my inspiration!
You're a countertenor? Check out the French troubadour Luc Arbogast, in particular his renditions of 'Stella Splendens' and 'Les Égaux de Landrais'. You might just find some new material to make your own.
This song gets me every time I hear it. You keep expecting him to stop the climb up the scale and then his voice just keeps going. Haunting... beautiful... emotional.... I can't say anymore. Thank you for posting this.
Hello Klaus I hope you can read my words in the Paradise. I grew up in France listening your voice, this song means a lot to me. You are eternal. Merci.
I've just seen some other versions of this song sung in a goofy way. I must say this version gives me goosebumps. He has such an otherworldly gorgeous voice!
Well the original sense of Purcell, when he composed this for a different tessitura(bass/baritone), was that it was to be played somewhat in a pantomime/playful way.
I remember meeting you at a party in NYC when I was like 10 years old, I was tripping off your artistry and your hairline. You held court with Bowie, Iggy and they couldn't fuck with you. R.I.P.
Klauss nomi ! ❤
I found him because Susumu HIrasawa, Japanese Musician covered this song with his own lyric in his new album named "BEACON". The tenor of Klaus sounds with sorrow and very emotional......
😓Too bad I'm still so young, having a family who's been both indirectly responsible for the continuing survival of these greatest classical arts via their businesses, along with a few others here and there such as an uncle's (older "cousin's" dad, who when not working as a medical doctor, would train opera singers [Klaus is a good name and cool to see his wearing the patricians' collar])...

Is basically the 1st time I hear Klaus Nomi... this man was a great opera singer o.o !! I guees I'll never hear a voice like this. Wonderful songs :) !!!

Klaus Nomis unverkennbare prägnant klare Stimme berührt mich dermaßen tief, ich nenn es einfach unbeschreiblich... Schade, ich wäre ihm sehr gerne einmal begegnet...
Klaus possessed such a gentle demeanor. It's unfortunate that people don't recognize the talent and vocal and visual art he was so keen at expressing. I love you KLAUS!!!
Known him when i was 13..now i am 53.. still in my heart... nothing more to say. Let me freeze to death...what else could say... love always. Thank you
Ethereal beautiful yet exquisitely painful. I am glad I have discovered Nomi's talent at moment in my life. Such great talent makes the darkness of our times so much more bearable. I have been blessed by this opportunity! I do not understand any of the 151 dislikes. Must be either homophobic troll or mumble rap/Justin Beiber/Nickleback fans smh
I always saw Purcell's 'King Arthur" as somewhat weird and nonsensical with scenes like the Cold Genius and magick woods and whatnot. I almost think having seemingly random reasons for songs like this was more Purcell just playing with the genre and with styles. He wanted a song with this very deliberate and very focused pacing that keeps rising so he found a way to force one in so he could experiment. That being said, as much as his version of the story is bonkers, the song was brilliantly composed and considering how hard I imagine it is to sing in that very forced and deliberate pace Nomi absolutely hit it out of the park with his rendition. Seeing the live version just reaffirmed how great a singer he was and what incredible control he had over his voice. Truly one of a kind and an irreplaceable voice.
This is odd...when I first saw pictures of Klaus Nomi as a teenager, I saw him as one of those many fashionable decorations for the hip interiors..I never realised til now that he was actually a singer. Many will say that this only adds to the sadness of his early death, I dare to say that I am glad I discovered the man and his music still yet.
Fucking Aids. As far as I can remember, I was kid as that time, and, on french TV, on Sunday morning, I use to see him in his celluloid apparence. It was at home. Always in black and white, on black and white screen. And every time I heard him, was an ecstatic moment. When you're less than thirteen, every strange is already what could reality should be. It's a matter of fact. I grew up on an island, in Brittany, in France, call Groix. He was revisiting voices, men voices. The art of a Castra, so amazingly well. For decades, he's still in my mind, part of myself. I met a photographer on the island, his name was Gérald. He was a friend of Klaus. We chatted a day and he told me who he was. For me, I was trying to believe than Gérald knew him. Pictured him, and shared time with him. Bless you All. This is so interesting Klaus Nomi was actually my neighbor.I used to see him all the time walking around and pasting his home made xerox copies of his pictures on corner walls to announce his performances.he loved the science fiction look with the ray gun and all.I used to sell toe shoes for ballet and Klaus would pass by on the afternoon to discuss music and see if anyone would "recognize" him.may he rest in peace.I believe he was the first ever victim of Aids in New York and perhaps the world
