Madam&Sirs, an issue which has largely been overlooked in Pakistan is the following: Pakistan was envisioned by Mr Jinnah as a homeland for Indian Muslims after British left. A large majority of indian Muslims stayed back in india and Mr Jinnah had no plan to repatriate them to newly formed Pakistan. The first act of Pakistan after August 1947 was to invade Kashmir which was a hindu princely state. And this changed the direction of Pakistan from a homeland of indian Muslims to acquisition of Kashmir which persists to date.
The realty of the present is far from the creation of Pakistan whosoever created it. I blame British. As far as Indian Mulims are concerned we're mostly hated by Pakistanis. We're sympathized but never liked and praised for our guts whatever we achieved in India. Ex-president Abulkalam is our inspiration and Ghalib the poet is our past to wipe our tears. By the time you would be thinking about us be advised to think more about yourself.

Regional federal issues are certainly not at the forefront in India. India has been moving towards federalism for quite some time now and will continue to do so.

What a blunderous statement from some one who claims to be a scholar of history. The word "history" comes from a Greek word, not a Latin word. I hope Jalal knows the difference between Latin and Greek.
Aeysha, don't you think that the demands with which Jinnah started were wrong. On the other hand, as Ramchandra Guha puts it " Pakistan is a perfect European state One Language Urdu, One Religion Islam" hoping to build an European Union by way of Pan Islamism . Week imagination couple with medieval Islamic traditions is the mess Pakistan has landed up in. Don't you think India was a far more imaginative and modern political thought.
As a Pakistani, she would never concede that India was much more ahead in thought and wisdom, giving each citizen a right to vote, and a liberal democracy when it looked ridiculous given India's situation at independence. Ayesha Jalal is an apologist for Pakistan's existence. She tries to justifies it by blaming it squarely on the failure of Congress to accept any kind of accomodation with the Muslim League.
I would argue that Jinnah never intended to create a separate state. He started out as an advocate for political rights of Muslims within an independent, united India. Historical events overtook him which culminated in creation of Pakistan. He was not living in isolation. He was not the only player in the game. Actions of multiple players led to what happened eventually.

Read Garrison State by Dr. Ahamed, and his well researched hypothesis is that Jinnah was nothing more than a pawn in big power politics, or read Dr. Dhulapalas "Making of new Madeena" where he describes an regressive approach taken by ML leadership, while trying to ride a tiger they eventually couldn't dismount.
Ayesha Jalal's Partisans of Allah: Jihad in South Asia is the most important contribution than any other work of hers. This book is the reference guide to understanding the most historical issues related to India and Pakistan. But the two able moderators don't find it worthy to discuss it?
24:20 nobody wants to mess with Islam even by depicting wishfully. Well, it fuels immensely to the politics which actually favors extremists. Interpretation of Islam is introduction of new knowledge. If you are not eligible don't try this. But Pakistan failed Islam that's a pity and inevitable.
