Great video! Switched my printer over to klipper after your ender livestream. Editing config on the fly is imo the greatest feature. I've spent hours recompiling marlin to get thing right, mainsail and klipper make this a breeze!

Okay, the adding a second board seamlessly by merely connecting a usb cable and extending functionality is what did it for me, that is cool. I've always wanted to add a diy MMU to my ender 3 and I have my 8 bit board left over, that's genius.

Thanks for the Klipper overview. I am in process of upgrading my old FT-5 to CoreXY and a SKR Pro 1.1 board. I was actively toying if this was the right time to look into something other than Marlin for firmware, and Klipper was top of my list to play with.

Hi, firstly I'm loving the live streams and your tuition videos. They are awesome. I am very new to Klipper and in the process of building my first Voron (Switchwire). I don't know if this has already been done but would really appreciate a video on creating the Klipper printer.cfg from scratch. All of the videos so far seem to presume you already have a printer config to reuse or upload... Keep up the great content. 👍🏻👍🏻

Brilliantly explained; I'm not super into 3d printing or anything, but I do have two older machines that would benefit from a leg-up in terms of their speed and configurability. I always mistakenly thought Klipper needed some custom hardware, like a special shield for the Pi so that it could directly control the steppers; I didn't realise that it would still use the original controller, but as a dumb I/O processor, that's pretty neat, and you helped clarify that. Thanks!

Klipper is GREAT, one of very few things related to 3d printing that I've been really excited about . In fact, in my opinion, it is one of the best thing that happen to 3d printing community, simple idea but brilliant. Do all the calculations by sbc and you all your control board is doing is executing gcode received by sbc. All my printers have 8bit controller boards, after I replaced marlin with klipper, wow, they print so much faster and better now, and you have so much more control over your hardware. Lately, I've been working on designing tool changer (similar to e3d, jubilee), people think they need better board like duet to handle all those extra motors, fans, and sensors, nop, klipper can drive several controllers at the same time, if you need to control extra motors/fans just add another cheap controller, even the most expensive boards like duet can not match what can be done with klipper, or perhaps they don't want to, if you need extra IO buy extension board, if that is still not enough buy top of the line board for $$$, and extension board as well, don't know. Personally I find marlin very limited,confusing and a lot of time is wasted recompiling, RepRamFirmware is OK but I say klipper is a way to go, i love it,

Klipper also runs quite well on old pc hardware. One advantage of using it is you can get stupid cheap pcs for less than what you can for a proper raspberry pi setup. You can also run multiple printers off one machine and you could also set it up to do your slicing. Kiauh installer is a really nice tool to use as well, this is what I use to install on the different computer types.

Nero, I tuned into your livestream last Saturday, and I am super excited for all the things you're planning on doing with this channel. I think you're going to explode if you keep it up with this type of clear, informative content because I think there currently is a need for a 3D printing channel that goes beyond consumer printer reviews and intermediate-level upgrades. As of now, I think the biggest channel that fits that description is Tom Sanladerer (whom I really enjoy, don't get me wrong), and it goes down from there in terms of skill level with most of the big channels. Which is fine; there needs to be entry-level content for people to get involved with 3D printing in the first place. For however long I've been 3D printing, I saw my Prusa as the pinnacle of prosumer-level print quality. Your Voron/Klipper videos have shown me how much untapped potential there is, even with sub-$1k hardware (hell, even sub-$500 hardware with the V0). The Prusa, while still a great printer, suffers from unavoidable artifacts such as the Benchy hull line and vertical ringing, but all it would take to fix these things is a Raspberry Pi and Klipper, which is crazy to think about. You probably don't have much reason to go out and buy a Prusa, but a really clear and detailed guide for getting Klipper working on a MK3S would likely make big waves in the Prusa community. Many people on the Prusa forums seem to be in denial that there even are software limitations with the stock MK3S, but maybe a good video and a lot of community experimentation could lead to officially-supported Klipper on the MK3S. That would certainly have a watershed of effects on the whole market. Maybe that's overly dramatic, but I sincerely think more people need to see what's possible with more processing power on cheap printers. Your Klipper Ender already blew my mind, and you can only go up from there. One critique though, I think you should shut off those lights in the window before filming. Very distracting to see bright blue lights shining directly into the camera!

I've been running klipper for a while but always good to see another overview to make sure I'm up to date on the high level support/ features. What kind of step rates are you running with your printers? I've got a SKR 1.4 Turbo and raspberry pi 3b and ran into step rate issues trying to run 128 for ext and 64 for 4 other independent steppers/ stepper driver. Also diamond hands baby.

Okay this is a lot of into and well presented, but I've got a couple of questions. 1. Can one raspberry pi run multiple printers? 2. If it can, what are the limits? For example, I have a pi 3b, and I've been hoping to jump into using it to remotely run my printers, but it really challenges my comfort zone (I am NOT a tech person yet) 3. How secure is it? I tried octoprint and it worked great, but I've been told that it's essentially open access to my network without some plugins. When I installed the plugins it stopped working, and I haven't reflashed it. Thank you for taking the time to put this video together.

This sounds like a inovative idea, having an atmega controller, this is very tempting. Two remarks: You are mistaken, when saying the raw commands need less bandwidth than the g-code, also it's much more timing sensitive, thus it has rather high demands on the communication interface. Also the native UART of an SBC provides much better latency than an uart with the whole USB communication overhead. Bandwidth itself of course is not a problem, but latency can be.

Due to the current unobtainium status of RPi boards (it's just starting to let up now), I've obtained a used HP T520 thin client to use for clipper. It has 4GB of ram and 16GB of SSD (both can be upgraded via module swap), along with an AMD embedded 64 bit X86 cpu (dual core 1.2-1.4ghz). About the same as recent Rpi models.

Great video. Some points I'd like to make: For any mainboard running an LPC17xx, you can flash Arksine's DFU Bootloader which allows you to bypass the whole moving the .bin off the SD card and onto the mainboard - you can flash Klipper as normal via the SSH terminal. One limitation of Klipper that I (and others) have had issues with is the ability to set the Z offset. Traditionally in Marlin, you are able to tune your Z offset while the print is running or in the case of Prusas, run a dedicated script which will trace a line where you can live adjust your Z offset with the knob. Klipper has no such feature. You are able to go to the tune menu to raise/lower the nozzle to adjust your Z offset during a print however this change only applies on the next GCode command, not in realtime as you turn the knob on your display like Marlin does. In turn, this makes tuning the Z offset a bit cumbersome and an aspect of Marlin I do miss.
@CanuckCreator
@CanuckCreator 3 года назад
The delay is Z adjusting is due to the fact timings are super critical with klipper and it sends commands in batches/blocks to the MCU, so injecting instantaneous adjustments isnt really a thing that can be done.
@agentl3r
@agentl3r 3 года назад
@@CanuckCreator Ah I see. This is an area where Marlin does outperform Klipper - maybe we will see this functionality in a future update.
@jakepF1D
@jakepF1D 3 года назад
I've never understood the need for this feature. I use the z_endstop_calibrate feature to tune my z offset in Klipper, then use very small gcode offsets in my slicer based on bed temperature if I'm printing PLA instead of my normal ABS. It's a one time adjustment that takes maybe 5 minutes and doesn't need to be changed again until I physically alter the printer such as a nozzle swap. I print for hundreds of hours without ever adjusting my z offset, and my first layer is always perfect.
@agentl3r
@agentl3r 3 года назад
@@jakepF1D As someone who regularly changes the position of the probe to change toolheads and whatnot it is very useful. Even generally for fine tuning the first layer height it is useful. The fact that Marlin does it via the knob instead of having to use a web interface makes it a lot easier to get a good first layer too.
@jakepF1D
@jakepF1D 3 года назад
@@agentl3r It still seems like you could do this once per toolhead, and you shouldn't need to touch it again. Ultimately though I'm sure others use printers in a different way than me. Mine is set up to do work, and I don't touch it unless I'm using it to make parts.
