Thanks very much for posting this vid. As a guy who found out at 18 years of age he was color blind and had his dream of being a pilot crushed, I can at least live some of my dreams through these awesome RU-vid posts. Thanks so much!
Phil, there are some really great Pilot Simulation Programs you can adapt to your computer and you would get a great deal of satisfaction from them, so I'm told. Don't give up the dream man.
I went there while i was in LA! this is probably the best plane spotting airport, its so busy and there are so many great spots where you can see the planes land and take off.
I have an infinite amount of respect for air traffic controllers (and pilots of course!) after this. It must be one of the most difficult jobs in the world monitoring such busy airspace. Thanks for all these videos SuredT! I could watch them all day.
That girl working that ATC is amazingly intelligent......wish I had that job. I' m proud of her. i also like the men who do that job...sometimes bad things happen and they are all ready for it. Yes I know their supervisor is near but...THEY KNOW THEIR JOBS...EVERYONE would like to thank all traffic controllers and pilots for all they do....amazing people she can be proud of her achievements as well as those men
Watching this vid and reading all the helpful and informative comments posted makes me wish every industry had such enthusiam and professionalism. We would have a much better world to live in. Great post!!
From those of us who fly around this great country and world for our jobs every week, I just want to say THANK YOU to all the pilots, attendants, ground people, TSA and the outstanding, ATC crews (people with nerves of steel!). You all do jobs that allow all of us to keep the world working....You all are the greatest! Thank you many times over!! Oh, and, outstanding video as well. :-) : > }
@guidodeukuzeta1234. In a 747 you start the flare at about 40 ft (the book says 30 ft but in my experience that's a bit too low) by increasing your pitch attitude with only 2 degrees, then close the thrustlevers to idle while keeping the pitch attitude the same. A smooth landing should follow.
Excellent video! And thank you so much for adding in the radio traffic. And mounting the camera up front just makes it that much better. I wish there a bunch of videos like this on You Tube because I really enjoy them. Thank you so much for posting it.
Thank you for posting this and the other videos. I take a KLM 744 between LAX and AMS at least once a year so appreciate seeing and hearing what happens just a few feet in front of me during the flight. I really appreciate the annotations as it is sometimes difficult to understand what is being said. These videos makes me feel good about choosing to fly KLM.
Truly awesome! I caught myself at the end of the video wild-eyed and starring into space...I just landed a 747!!!! thanks for sharing! Happy Holidays from New Jersey USA!
@MarcoPalva. Do you know there was a time there weren't any PC's? Well in those days I got my flight training. There were only linktrainers, no vision, no 3 axis movements, only very simple computers. And nobody had a PC at home, they still had to be invented at that time. I am talking about the early 70's ;-)
Did you know that you can see Union Station(Alameda Street), Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, Beverly Hills Century City on your right and on your left La Brea Tarpits, Rancho Palos Verdes/Long Beach/Catalina Island. Just before touchdown you can see the 405 freeway Hilton Hotel.
I flew with "this" flight a couple of weeks ago (klm601 to la and 602 back) service was good, airport kinda sucked lol (the departure area didnt have many stores, food courts etc) LA was freaking amazing but damn it was nice to fly the 747, my first time ever :) Thanks KLM!
I can see where you're coming from with the 4 and 2 runways, heathrow having more movements if you look at one runway for a given amount of time, but i was talking about the total traffic movements. And yes, I am aware of these rules and I know them by heart.
@Myfochop. No, just monitoring the progress of the flight which means: times and fuel remaining over waypoints according flightplan? Weather still according forecast? If not, consider all options for adjustment of flightplan and course of action. And so on, and so on.
very bissy airport!. Great video. realy love the ATC. Any tips or advice for an upcoming pilot?. bij klm natuurlijk:P. ik moet alleen nog een paar jaartjes wachten. Keep them coming.
WOW! GREAT video!!! Not only did you have a steady, non-handheld shot (unlike MOST other similar videos), you also had GREAT audio... Including radio traffic; and no stupid music to completely ruin it! OUTSTANDING!!!
@1053857 there is always a glideslope. when flying a visual approach, the pilots still use an ILS, just not connected to an Autopilot. There are triangles that show up on the PFD showing localizer and glideslope situation
@Flooo9090 This was a visual approach I believe, so there is no glideslope, although he can use the PAPI. But when you're on an ILS, once you've disconnected the AP, you follow the localiser/glideslope with the flight director.
@Marinus1111. With some aircraft you have to wait till nose gear is on the ground, with the 747 you can apply reverse thrust at main gear touchdown. Vertical speed at touchdown? Same as your C152. Soft landing is at 50 ft/min. Hard touchdown is at 500 ft/min. Very hard is 1000 ft/min.
YAY!! a new video!! i was waiting for it for a really long time!! :DD this landing is REALLLLY SMOOOOOTH!!! awesome piloting skills! and thank you for sharing your flight experiences! :)
I love the video, have watched it countless times, however I can't keep up with or follow the hand-off to a new controller...can someone break it down for me what is happening?? Like most other commentors, I'm totally digging how the female controller at the end takes command and directs all the flights - she owns LAX!
Ummm...please disregard the last name...apparently my pre-teen son thought this was an appropriate name to use on youtube...I didn't realize it until it was to late...
Just saw this...seven years later! However at 0:26, the approach controller (SOCAL TRACON) instructs KLM 601 Heavy to maintain 180 kts airspeed to LIMMA (the final approach fix for RWY 25L) and to contact LAX tower at LIMMA, on frequency 120.95, (this point or fix is at about a 5 mile final to the runway, at the Harbor Freeway). It sounds like they switched from approach to tower frequency just inside the Harbor Freeway, at 2:17. Unfortunately, due to a lot of other aircraft calling on tower frequency, KLM 601 Heavy isn't able to call in until well inside of LIMMA (only about 3 miles out, at 2:54). Understandably, he was beginning to get a little concerned that he wouldn't be able to call in time to get a landing clearance, before getting in too close. Finally, at 3:04 she responds by saying, "KLM 601 Heavy, L.A. tower, wind 240 degrees at niner (9 kts), Runway 25 Left, cleared to land". He responds with "Cleared to land, Runway 25 Left, KLM 601 Heavy." After landing, at 5:04, the tower instructs the flight, "KLM 601 Heavy, turn right on to (taxiway H9) Hotel Niner, hold short of Runway 25 Right on (taxiway) Tango, which he reads back, almost verbatim (missing only the "on Tango" part, but taxiway tango is the next one in front of the aircraft, so it's pretty obvious. The important part to readback is: "Hold Short" of "Runway XX or Taxiway X" and "the aircraft call-sign". He is still waiting for clearance to cross Runway 25 Right (due to multiple departures off of that runway) when the video ends.
SuredT's channel has been incredible ever since I first found it through the Sint Maartens landing.. real shame if he has retired! Anyone know of any good channels with similar videos?
I love USA! As that Qantas 747 was on approach I just looked outside and LA is amazing! Comparing it to Australia, LA is so much better. Thank you for posting this vid!
Another great video . If you ever fly into CYVR, can you please put it on RU-vid? I've been waiting for a good one of Vancouver to come on here for the longest time.
@dyn4mic87 That the boeing is heavy ;). I think you're referencing to the "Caution Wake turbulences heavy boeing 747" - These are "winds" or actually turbulences that appear directly behind an aircraft and they can reach about 2-3 miles behind it.
BTW I love seeing your KLM flight whenever I was at the Alaska Lounge in Terminal 3 I would be there just to see your flight arrive from Amsterdam and depart back to Amsterdam. Now with the new Virgin Loft I can see your flight leave and depart again(:/
@Rafal102able. No Autoland means Autoland. The autopilot stays connected till the point where the pilot wants to leave the centerline at taxi speed. So the autopilot keeps tracking the ILS localiser on the runway exactly over the centerline by steering with the rudder. The autothrottle disconnects after the throttles are retarded to idle setting and reverse thrust is given. So after touchdown.
@supersnozzer95 Incorrect, KLM is in the process of retiring the md11 and if anything, would switch to an a330 or 777, not to MD11, from what I know, it is still currently a 744.
@MyPilot747 It's all rubber. When those planes touch down, they first leave a good portion of rubber from the wheels on the runway, until the wheels roataion speed matches the aircrafts speed. The smoke you see from an aircraft that just touches down is an indicator that rubebr was melted and the runway got a little darker.
@3:01 KLM 6-0-1 heavy LA tower wind 2-4-0 at 9er runaway 2-5 left clear to land. only took me 10 times to understand what the hell she said. wow lots of instructions from the tower. @4:11 it's cool to see Delta 1508 sitting at the end of the 25R, the challenger crossing 25R and American 1458 taxing to 25R. nice vid. I just learned a bit about ATC in this past 30 minutes. thanks!
