Spoiler here Grandpa was fully aware of Huepow's trickery toward Klonoa, and was in on it. One of his final lines "It was only a short while" i feel, is him hinting to the player that Klonoa's circumstances in Phantomile are unique, especially once you're aware of the ending. But it's also framed in a way that new players would interpret that line as Granpda talking about how Klonoa is just a little kid.

That explains that. I think it would be cool if we eventually got animated shorts or something that expand on the lore of both games.

It's not a bad remake to me honestly, i think it's more appropriate for gamers that don't give a shit about the story and just want to enjoy a good old platformer. Also this game was dubbed in many languages as well, and funny enough, all of them have a better voice for Klonoa than the English one, tho it still feels like they're just saying it with no emotion whatsoever, especially in the Spanish dub (which is the one i played). But all this big bible of text goes to the bin considering that KPRS has a much, MUCH better port of DTP than the Wii one, thus making it obsolete, but I'll still revisit the Wiimake from time to time like with many Klonoa games. But your video was very good and very well detail, i got a laugh from some moments as well, keep it up!

KPRS is actually a worse port as the music timing is cut off abruptly by automatic cutscenes at certain parts, mostly notably when Huepoe changes shape at the end, and also the ending cutscnee was made even worse. Even less sky effects now, no sun flare as the sad final song of rebirth swells in the sky, in fact the dark clouds from the nightmare opening in the sky and the flash of light to absorb at the ending also has been removed along with other sky effects. This is actually worse than the Wii in totality. It is the Wii Version with less graphical effects, Uprezzed.

20% dislike ratio... They hated ToastyMann because he told them the truth. In all honesty, I'm kind of surprised anyone bothered making this video at all. Maybe I just wasn't looking in the right places, but to me it always seemed like the Klonoa fanbase was a little bit too forgiving and uncritical of this remake. Before now I had hardly ever seen any criticisms other than the surface-level, "Teenage Klonoa is awkward," and, "Why doesn't Huepow have hands?" Not too many people seem to care when it comes to the lifeless animation, the muted color palette, the totally botched ending scene, and the many other things that make it demonstrably inferior to the PS1 original. Frankly I'm really glad that you decided to tear the Wii game a new one. It's very cathartic to hear somebody properly and publicly articulate every grievance I've silently held against this remake for so many years.

I’m happy that for in-game cutscenes in the Phantasy remake are using OG PS1 scripts and voices though FMV scenes will probably be using Wii cutscenes & voices, which is disappointment and considering how much it borrows from Wiimake. It will still have dull camera movement & stilted animations. However, since it will use OG scripts and voices within the in-game cutscenes. I’m happy that chemistry between Klonoa, Huepow, and few others will actually feel impactful and having charming voices. They also made their designs more faithful to OG PS1 and I like how colorful it looks compared to Wiimake. I hope that Phantasy remake is gonna become decent substitute when it releases

Great video mate. I got into Klonoa a couple years ago and fell in love instantly, and was lucky enough to not have the ending spoiled. But I only played the Wiimake after the Phantasy Reverie remake was announced so I could get a better idea of what to expect. Holy fuck, was I disappointed. I actually made a video pretty similar to this a few months ago, going fully in depth about the opening FMV, but I'm glad this video exists to compare the ending, as I didn't want to put any spoilers in my video. It honestly baffles me that I haven't seen as many people talk about these differences in the fandom, but I'm glad the new remakes are improving upon this, though I don't think anything could ever replace the original

I actually saw that video and I think you hearted my comment. Great to see you here! I really hope PRS becomes a decent alternative to the original Door To Phantomile, as I have a friend I really want to introduce to the series that can't play the original game at all. Lunatea's Veil is looking good so far from what we've seen, which is especially good news for me as I consider that to be the better game. We've still got a few days so I guess we'll see how it turns out. @ToastyMann
@ToastyMann 2 года назад
I feel like they could've done a bit more. For example, even though the Wii version's source code is being used (controls feel almost identical aside from a few modifications), the bonus levels I mentioned in the Mirror Mode are completely missing. And as for the ending, the LEAST they could've done was fix the color pallette and I would've gave it a pass. I'm glad the story is properly presented but it's still not quite up to par with the original. Not to mention the swapped costumes from both games were exclusive to physical pre-orders. You know, something America never got. I also feel like there could've been a few more aside from a few Namco crossovers. Maybe paid DLC in the future, idk. And for Klonoa 2, it's pretty much on par with the PS2 version aside from a few lighting issues and bugged mouth movements in the cutscenes. I'll have much more to say when I start writing the script, as I'm recording footage at the moment.
@MichealKennelly
@MichealKennelly 2 года назад
@@ToastyMann Could've done more probably. But as long as the gameplay is still fun, which seems to be the case based on the demo that I played, and the story uses the original script, I honestly feel like it can still be a pretty good remake, regardless of it's flaws. I will also say that based on what I seen from multiple reviews, Klonoa 2 is pretty an great remake with some minor flaws like the ones you mentioned. I honestly never expected them to be perfect, but like I said, if the gameplay is still fun, they use the original script, and if it runs well, which based on the demo for the PS4 seems to thankfully be the case, I think I'll be pretty happy with it. Could've used more work yeah, but still pretty decent nonetheless.

I just played through it & the graphics were great in most places, but there was a lack of polish in the gameplay & big changes (like the look & feel of the Joka boss fight) that didn't sit well. After playing K2 in the remakes, it seems to me like they started remaking just K2 & then thought that no one would know what Klonoa was, so they sort of rushed it, using the code & most of the graphics from the Wii. I feel like a lot of people in the gaming community excuse remakes for falling short because the originals still exist. Of course someone like me can fire up BFBB on Dolphin or an OG Xbox and have a blast, but the typical casual consumer of today probably doesn't even know what emulation is or doesn't want to deal with the hassle of finding an old console that still works. I never realized that the Wiimake redid the Phantomilan voices actually (though I still prefer it over the PS1 for being more clear, outside Balue holy crabs I forgot how much I hated his Wii Phantomilan voice) Either way, glad to actually see actual reasons about why so many prefer the PS1 version over the Wii version. I played the Wii version first and even though I could tell that it wasn’t perfect and that the PS1 version definitely had the better script and MUCH better ending, I didn’t fully realize just how much better the story is presented in the PS1 version. While I do go back to the original PS1 version every now and then, I can definitely appreciate it more than I used to. My biggest reasons for preferring the Wiimake were the gameplay differences (bigger Wind-Bullet range [sucks that it’s only stuck to easy in PRS], faster speed, etc.), better animations and modeling in-game (I agree that the coloring is too drab, but the modeling and texturing is really great and even upscales well in Dolphin imo), and the new outfit (though I agree that it’s weird having the Klonoa 2 proportions for the younger DTP Klonoa). Pretty much, I preferred Wii for the gameplay and PS1 for the presentation Either way, I’m just hoping that PRS can soundly be the best of each world. The demo was really enjoyable and gave me much hope and gosh was it amazing to see that it seems to be doing well with pre-orders. This Thursday really can’t come soon enough, I hope we all are able to enjoy Klonoa’s grand return!

THIS COMMENT REFERS TO SPOILER MATERIAL. I was vague about the biggest plot detail but please don't read if you haven't played this game. One thing I noticed about the wiimake's cutscenes that I think sums the whole thing up happens towards the end of the scene where [REDACTED]. After Pamela picks Klonoa up and flies away, she flies off-screen and out of the frame. Except, she doesn't. Her model stops off-camera like in 99% of all 3D animation, but they cut the framing wrong and you can still see a part of her model frozen there in the corner. It's tiny, ridiculously easy to fix mistakes like that which add up and drag the whole thing down. Also, Pamela in general was a really big victim of the switch to in-engine cutscenes. She lost all of her beautiful extra fins and fluid animation in flight that really made her feel like something more than a fish. To me she felt like a dragon in the original's cutscenes, she was truly gorgeous.
@ToastyMann
@ToastyMann Год назад
Yeah a lot of the animations share similar problems if you pay close attention. In the intro, there's a shadow right behind where Klonoa lands before he hops onto the screen, meaning he's basically floating in mid-air. This was a really good review! The Wii remake does have a budget feel to it and I really wish the cutscenes had better animation! Also, I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Phantasy Reverie Series, I do feel like they should’ve used the original FMV’s, those cutscenes still look amazing to this day and replacing them with in-engine cutscenes really hurts the presentation of the story! :)
@ToastyMann
@ToastyMann 2 года назад
That's the main reason why I think the Wiimake is bad. The story is an essential part of Door To Phantomile and leaves a lasting impact on most players. The Wiimake butchering that aspect while sprinkling on some murky graphics and butt-ugly models is what really kills it. Everything has so much less weight with these lifeless animations and worse performances, not to mention the script turns Klonoa into a nothing character with like 20 lines in the whole game. I'm glad Phantasy Reverie Series tried to mitigate that issue with a more faithful script and PS1 voice acting, but the animations are still subpar despite their efforts to improve them. I'll have much more to say in my PRS video but I still think the PS1 version is superior.

Yeah, I do think the Phantasy Reverie Series version of Door to Phantomile is an improvement over the Wiimake but I feel like they still could’ve done more like using the original FMV’s as I’ve mentioned before or even having the original PS1 version of the game available as an unlockable extra, that would’ve been so cool! Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil on the other hand is a fantastic remaster! It’s basically the definitive version in my opinion!

@@Christian-245 I honestly think they should've reanimated all the cinematic cutscenes from scratch even if it meant a delay. And as for Klonoa 2, it's pretty much on-par with the original minus the lighting and a few animations but that'll likely be patched. I've also noticed the wind bullet goes slightly less far than it should so hopefully that gets fixed too. The closer to the original, the better.

@@ToastyMann Yep! Reanimating the cutscenes honestly would’ve been a good decision! Also, the Wind Bullet range feels kinda weird in the remaster of the first game, like it feels off. I’m not sure if it’s just my imagination but it doesn’t feel right. I usually miss an enemy sometimes and take damage. Klonoa 2’s Wind Bullet range feels fine to me but it’s been a long time since I played the original PS2 version so maybe that’s how the range always was.

Games like Door To Phantomile are great examples of why i think source code preservation is important. Namco seems to have lost the source code for the original version, hence why they used this for PRS instead. Remakes are not a bad idea but they set a dangerous precedent that they don't have to try, which was definitely the case here. Fans will still buy it, and casuals will eat it up because they don't remember the original version all that well, so who cares if it's bad? All the people complaining about it know how to emulate, and the casuals don't see the problems. And I know the title seems clickbaity and exaggerated, but I genuinely do think this is a bad remake. You *could* call it a good game by its own merits, but the way they butchered the story and art style from the original makes it an objectively worse game in my eyes. They had the opportunity to make it even better thanks to the more powerful hardware, but instead we got a watered down presentation with butt-ugly character models and stilted animations. But it's okay, because it has a higher poly count.

Yeah, as I said in the video, a lot of remakes tend to lose the magic of the original games. Ok, so I finished the first game remake in Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series, and I gotta be honest, I thought it was pretty good. I honestly didn't have any frame rate issues or control issues, and the gameplay is just as fun as before, plus I kinda like how it looks, especially when compared to the Wiimake. Not as good looking as the PS1 version but pretty decent looking nonetheless in my opinion. It does has some problems, I won't deny that, such as some of the cutscenes, which I think could be better if they fix Klonoa’s mouth so he doesn’t accidentally smile during some important scenes, plus the ending is nowhere as perfect as the PS1 version, but I find it kinda better than the Wiimake if I have to be honest. So yeah, they probably really could have done a bit more, but honestly, I'm happy with it nonetheless, regardless of its flaws. I have a LOT I want to say about this review, the Wii remake, the Phantasy Reverie Series, and just a bit of Lunatea's Veil. Seriously, this will be a long one. If you haven't finished the review, scroll back up RIGHT NOW because I will be talking spoilers too. You have been warned. I do want to point out that I believe you might have really misinterpreted some crucial ingredients of that ending(But to be fair, things are so open and unexplained in the canon duology that some of the observations you make about it that I don't agree with may really be the actual intention, nobody knows for sure). Klonoa never came across to me like he was upset or angry with Huepow about what he had done to his memories. He's just upset that he doesn't get to stay in Phantomile. The conflict isn't that he's mad at Huepow and demands answers about what's going on, but just the opposite. He loves Huepow and unabashedly considers him his best friend and he absolutely doesn't want any answers about what's actually going on. He's so attached to the world and in denial about leaving that he's attempting to gaslight himself into accepting that Phantomile absolutely is and always will be his real home. He doesn't want to accept or even acknowledge the truth. Huepow gets a little more blunt later on in the scene because he knows it's unhealthy for Klonoa to keep thinking that way and he wants Klonoa to work past it, accept the truth, and ultimately grow from it(that newfound maturity is perfectly reflected in Lunatea's Veil). This part is really up to interpretation, especially considering that Klonoa realizes Lunatea isn't his home either, but I'm just personally of the belief that Klonoa has no idea what world he's really from. I also don't think that, even if he does, that he's adamant on staying in Phantomile because his other life sucks, but because he feels such an unhealthy attachment to Phantomile. Even if he does know what his original life was like, I'd honestly sooner believe that he considers it too to be a great one, but just actively chooses Phantomile anyway. The Wii remake is bad. you already spent 40 minutes discussing why it's bad, so I won't spend TOO long throwing my hat in the ring, though I do have at least a couple of things to say. You mentioned Caddicarus being one of the only big RU-vidrs to give Klonoa the spotlight, but the next biggest is probably ExoParadigmGamer(you should really check him out if you haven't already). This isn't a personal attack to him(because I usually love his analyses), but I HARD disagree with his take on the Wii remake. Still, if you love the Klonoa series, he's definitely worth looking into. The Wii remake sucks and you don't need me to tell you that. Maybe I'm looking into things too much, but I think if there's any other reason it turned out the way it did, I'm thinking it might have been the series creator's potential dissatisfaction with how Door to Phantomile ultimately turned out. He originally wanted something much grittier(observable by the infamous original character design he had in mind) and I'm thinking he might have went the way of George Lucas. Maybe he didn't recognize the genius of his own work and tried tampering with it too much until we got the Wii remake. Credit goes to TheGamingBritShow(another big RU-vidr who gave the series some attention) for this one, but Door to Phantomile is potentially the single tightest video game experience ever created. The only slights I have with it are the bit of momentum Klonoa has on the ground and the Mirror Spirits. The Wii remake ultimately feels like it lost almost all of the original's tight feeling. I thought I wouldn't say much about the Wii remake(considering I haven't even played it, only watched it), but here we are. Now I wanna talk Phantasy Reverie Series. Honestly, I'm disappointed. I see you made a video on Phantasy Reverie Series as well, so I guess I'll go check that one out later and see if we're on the same page. Door to Phantomile is simply too plagued by the Wii remake blood. A few nice changes were made, but it just lacks the charm of the original for me and maintains much of the stilted clunkiness of the Wii remake. It also got rid of the Wii remake's unique features, and I don't know if that's better or worse. Seriously unfortunate. Lunatea's Veil is... better. There's not as much wrong with it really, but I do have one major complaint. I hate the artstyle. I haven't even played the PS2 version, but I just adore its cel-shaded artstyle so much. All of that was lost in translation since they wanted so hard to unify the game with Door to Phantomile... a remake plagued by Wii blood. Lunatea's Veil got lightly Wii remakified and that just makes me upset. I honestly would have sooner taken upscaled ports of the original versions of each game. Still, I think I'm glad I got it since it was my first time experiencing Lunatea's Veil, it means more hope for Klonoa's future, and I even got it on sale. There is also no excuse to not have the other Klonoa games together in a collection, at the very least the already English-translated GBA duology. My God, I had so much more to say than I thought I would have had. I don't even have a nostalgic connection to Klonoa. I only played the first game during the first half of 2021, expanded my experience to the rest of the platformers up to now(I still have to get around to Legendary Star Medal, Beach Volleyball, and I guess the Wii remake too at some point), and absolutely fell in love with the series. I just hope I get to see Klonoa 3 some time soon.

@@ToastyMann Yeah I get that. By the way, do you plan on making a video giving your thoughts on the new remasters that just came out?

@@Cheesyboi Absolutely. Expect that to be up by early to mid August. All the footage is recorded, I'm doing VOs at the moment, and I'm even on camera for the first time that isn't an old Livestream!

I wanted to come back to say that I I'm disappointed in how Phantasy reverie just follows the WiiMake's example and also squanders and cheapens the ending's impact. I don't think I'll be able to get over that. The only good thing about that ending is the fact that Hewpoe's Model isn't as ugly as the WiiMake one.

Great to hear. I've actually noticed a lot of people who've grown up with this version, and I'm not here to rain on anyone's parade. I have my gripes about PRS and I'm still glad it exists, because it's introducing so many new people to the series.

Yeah. It IS a bad remake and the original Door to Phantomile is still superior (even to Phantasy Reverie) But I'm still glad it exists and I'm still glad I own it. I mean, if all of it leads to an eventual Klonoa 3, I'll be thankful. I love Klonoa and this franchise deserves better.

If I'm to be honest, Phantasy Reverie doesn't do as much justice either. It's atleast a better attempt to be a faithful remake, but it's still just as cheap looking.

Can't agree with the FMVs being the best on the entire console. FFIX blows it out of the water.

Can't exactly disagree with that. I'm just glad the script is more faithful to the PS1 and uses the old voice acting. I still prefer the PS1 version. It sucks how I have to recommend PRS to new players because the best version of DTP is hundreds of dollars online or else you have to download a ROM.

Welp. The Klonoa 2 remake is out, and it's REAL bad. They tried to scrub all that wonderful atmosphere and originality as much as they could. Thankfully, it's so good that it shines through, but the remake is still comparitively sterile and lifeless. It's inferior to the original in almost every way.
@ToastyMann
@ToastyMann 9 месяцев назад
I actually did a video on Phantasy Reverie, but I'd consider Klonoa 2 in that collection to be just a remaster rather than a remake, because it's built off of the old PS2 source code. All that really takes a hit is the lighting and a few facial animations being missing, but those can be modded back in on the PC version. I still vastly prefer the original but I wouldn't call the new version detrimental.
