Thanks for this videos and your link that contains a gold mine of information! Had the chance to get the hold of a kit a few years ago but never got to install it on my Gen1. I"m getting ready to order the few parts I miss thanks to your website!
I am glad to hear that! There's no good reason not to have a Kickstarter on a Gen 1 because it is really pretty easy to do. The hardest thing is finding the parts, and you've got those, so have at it! Best, Tom
Ok, at least I could buy complete kit by second hand klr 600cc, so I changed the cluch, first gear and I installed all the spare parts of the kick start. Even this when the engin is cold it is difficult to start. But well, when hot it is quite easy.
I have a 2003 KLR. I'm more a visual guy. 2003, from the write up. All I need is the kickstart assembly, pre 96 clutch basket and lever, yes? I have a KLR 250 and I really enjoy the kickstart only aspect of the bike and according to my local dealer, I can get a kickstart assembly + lever. Is there any confirmation if the kick gear between the 250 and 600 are the same or different size?
You will need a complete kick-start assembly mechanism, which includes a very hard-to-find 13206-1051 Guide. You will need a kick lever that is in great shape; you may want to look for a KZ1000 lever if the one you have is dodgy. The 2003 does not have the idler gear in it, so you need that in addition to the early clutch basket. I'd look for a complete clutch.
my kickstart on my klr 600 wont move the piston it will only go back upwards instead of downwards like its supposed to. can you give any tips on how to fix that? thanks
If you mean that it goes down without moving the piston, then the ratchet is stuck. You'd need to pull the water pump, clutch cover, and clutch basket to get the kick starter mechanism out and repair it. If you mean that it won't go down at all, I'm not sure how that fits with 'it will only go back upwards'. I'm a bit confused there. Can you provide more detail? Tom
hello, I have a 650klr and I installed the kick start but I didn.t change the primary gear. So now it is almost impossible to start it. Do you know the reference of the primary gear spare part? for to buy it. many thanks for this video
If you want to change to the KLR600 primary you will need to find both the primary gear and the clutch basket on e-bay or in a junkyard. They are both no longer available as spares. Tom
I tried to find that site, but couldn't. Do yo uhave a complete URL? I tried www.bajademexico.com.mx , www.bajademexico.com, and www.bajademexico.mx . Tom
Eventually it did! www.souperdoo.com/stuff%20that%20i%20think%20about/everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-a-lkr-kickstarter-but-were-afraid-or-too-smart-to-ask
