There are tons of secrets in Knapping or Flintknapping. One of them that many people don't discuss is how to get the large flakes to pop off a spall. In this video I discuss those secrets and show how to pop the big flakes using a proper strike, support and better understanding of flake properties. Also I include some high speed slow motion video!
Thanks a million for watching, liking and sharing my videos. I appreciate the support you all have given this channel! Your time, interests and feedback are important to me. I really want to say thanks to each and every person who likes, subscribes and shares my videos. Much respect!

I really appreciate the closeups. That alone is far more helpful than someone just sitting there in the middle of the shot trying to explain what they are doing! I hope you keep doing the closeups in future knapping videos.

Good explanation Donny. I had to learn a lot of this the hard way. Cut fingers-humanity’s first hazardous waste. But yeah man! Good explanation! I love experimental archeology!

What do you prefer to Knapp? Obsidian, dacite, flint , chert, coral, glass? I'm just starting out and trying to figure out what the best materials to learn the are. Thanks for the awesome video. The science behind it makes it easier to understand.
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks Год назад
No worries. Happy to help. I like hard cherts. The tools produced last a good chunk of time. If your starting out…dacite is affordable and a good stone to learn from. Obsidian I stay from typically, but dacite is good to start with.

Perhaps the best flake I've ever seen followed these exact concepts. Did you ever see William Lord take a long axis bilit and strike an obcidian blank CD? I still can't forget that one strike. Slow motion. He had a perfect dagger preform and had no more thinning to do. It's on his RU-vid channel on "making high quality obcidian dagger " will Lord prehistoric survival" It's pretty easy once you get the motion down.

sir, you provide excellent lessons that i enjoy very much!! thank you for that! you're one of the few people on the internet that i found who shows it as realistic as possible. very off-topic, but i wanted to ask you (for purely educational reasons as it seams i can't find answers anywhere on the internet) about animal furs and leathers: how to make clothes and stuff from them, how to preserve the fur better with available resources, and especially how long does animal leather/fur clothing lasts. would be very excited to learn this!

@jimmiegraybill2524

It looks like the support of your fingers is directing the shock through the stone to a certain point and where your support stops is where the flake stops

I tried knapping a stone knife from fairly thick churt and kept ending up with a sharp round block. This really explains why. Lol

Hey I'm really curious, is there any chance on getting a more in depth walk along identifying churt, flint, and other knapping stones? To be honest I've been working on the upper Delaware. I find great hammer and other tool stones but I'm having trouble finding anything to make bladed tools. What am I not seeing?

I've had far less step fractures since watching your tutorials. However i still get a little knob or hump that forms on either side because i can't seem to carry that flake all the way through it. Is my tool too hard or soft? I'm using primarily a small section of deer antler and mostly hammer stones.

When looking to make a working blade that you can carry and use often in the field or when hunting, what length and width of blade would you say is a good rule of thumb? Thanks in advance
@arumatai

doesn't the supporting with the finger also increase the chance of splinters flying up into your face/eyes? has this ever been an issue for you?
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks

Not an issue at all. Safety glasses and gloves wouldn’t hurt, but I don’t wear them all too often.

Hopefully one day you could do something explaining the bear run-ins and how to handle it if you have no firearms, etc. As I'm wanting to get out there myself but have no idea what to do if a hungry bear wants my fish/other food that's cooking..or just keeping them away in general.
