Kevin - I don't have any experience using them while conditioning, but I know some people do use them during conditioning, and I don't see why you couldn't. If they help, I'd go ahead and use them.

So i have sometimes its really weird pain in my knees while squating i went to the doctor and she said she didnt noticed something but when i squat i sometimes gets a little painfull snap and then after that i dont feel pain anymore and when i run i dont have a problem and its mostly my left knee

Thanks, and I’m glad you found it useful. Yes, I’d recommend washing your sleeves - how often will depend on how well you can tolerate their smell :-) if you sweat a lot, or if you train in a hotter environment, they will need washing more often. I air dry mine, and they dry pretty fast.

Been squatting for 3 months, pretty decent form and not terribly heavy (150lbs) and I have recently experienced a faint but noticeable pain deep in and around my kneecap. Hoping these can help reduce the pain a little bit

This was perfect for me and choosing to buy some for my boyfriend. He wants to do cross fit but he jumps into things too fast to show off, hurts himself, then beats himself up for not looking like professional. His knee was reconstructed after motocross accident so lifting hurts him a little. THESE WILL HELP 👏🏾

Thanks for the video without trying to sell anything. Is a knee sleeve "cheating" or aiding the lift at all? I have a torn meniscus and the on the last few reps and the next day I feel it abit

You're very welcome, and no, we would certainly not consider it cheating, and for what it's worth, they are allowed in raw powerlifting (as is a belt). It's not like a tightly wound knee wrap (used in equipped powerlifting) that actually stores a considerable amount of potential energy on the descent (allowing you to use that stored energy to come back up out of the hole). If a sleeve allows you to train with more comfort - and I bet it will - I'd recommend it. To be fair to the equipped powerlifters out there, knee wraps aren't cheating in that sport as they are allowed by those rules. Knee slide can sometimes cause some knee issues, and just in case that's an issue, you might want to check out our video on using a TUBOW: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_wEF-YDesaw.html

My patella tendon hurts during squatting, especially my right one. I am fine during deadlifting. I know you said you dont recommend wearing sleeves if the knees are fine during DL but what do you recommend as an aid to help the tendons during squatting?

Daniel, In addition to knee sleeves, I'd recommend having a coach look at your squat. Specifically, I'd recommend contacting a Starting Strength Coach, and you can find the directory here: startingstrength.com/coaching/ssc (If you can make it to Omaha, we can work with you in person, and if you're can't, we can set up a remote session. All this said, this is not intended to be a sales pitch for Testify - suffice to say I'd advise working with a good coach). Try hip adduction & hip abduction as a warm up 3 x 12 for each. I used to ache all the time when going straight into squats/deadlifts. Hope it helps

@@Squirrel-harvest_ Yo thanks for the advise. I posted the original comment 8 months ago so I was just about 4 months into my Gym career! The patella tendon pain is gone now, I dont feel it at all even after heavy squat sessions. It was my form I think what was causing all the issues, I dont wear knee sleeves yet or any other aid for that matter I just focus on my form and the bracing part. so I am glad I figured it out. Yesterday I hit my heaviest squat PR yet, 315 :)

Brian, sorry for the belated response. If you’re squatting, you will probably appreciate knee sleeves. That said, the first and foremost thing I would recommend is getting some solid coaching on the squat. I recommend this for anybody who is squatting, but especially for someone with your knee history. My recommendation would be to find a Starting Strength Coach.

Would sleeves be good for lighter weight? Im new to lifting and I havent done anything heavy but im a 300 pound guy and my knees hurt just doing basic body weight squats.

The simplest approach is to use them if your knees bug you, so I wouldn't worry about tying the use of the sleeves to a certain weight level. With that said, I would also recommend seeking out a coach to get some coaching on your squat technique as this can make a significant difference for those with knee pain (good coaching will always make a difference, but it can make an even bigger difference for those with pain). You can do whatever you like, of course, but I would strongly recommend seeking out a Starting Strength Coach. Do the knee sleeves affect quad activation in the squat? I'd imagine if they're aiding knee extension they would take away from the workload on the quads

Nah - knee sleeves will provide some compression and warmth for the joint, which makes things more comfortable, but they're not providing an appreciable amount of assistance to knee extension. Now, knee wraps, on the other hand, specifically the competition version (read: rather thick and extremely tight and restrictive) used by equipped powerlifters will absolutely aid in knee extension. As they stretch on the descent, they store potential energy, which is then used to come back up out of the hole. Of course, this is the point of such a wrap as they are legal in equipped powerlifting (as opposed to raw powerlifting, where only knee sleeves are permitted) and help lift more weight. Even with this in mind, competition knee wraps won't necessarily reduce quad activation because the lifter will simply lift more weight. Simplistic example here with an arbitrary numbers, but I think it will do the job: 90% "quad activation" without knee sleeves = 400 lb squat while 90% "quad activation" with knee sleeves = 450 lb squat since the sleeves provide the extra 50 lb. And . . . all this said, we don't train anyone who does equipped powerlifting at Testify, but you'll recognize competition wraps at a meet right away - it visibly affects how stiff someone's knees look when they walk. Short version: I'd recommend knee sleeves, and I'd stay away from competition wraps unless you want to do equipped powerlifting. (Training wraps are fine - they're thinner than competition wraps and will function like knee sleeves.) Sorry for the long answer.

I haven’t worn them over sweats, but I have seen it done. They’ll probably fit tighter at the least. On a related note, people wear them over leggings/compression pants all the time, but those are significantly thinner than sweats.

As of recently my knee sort of aches when I get to the bottom of the squat or right before it, would knee sleeves be the right thing for me ? Also would putting ice on the knee after my workout help with the aching ?

A knee sleeve might indeed help your situation. Ice will help in the acute sense, i.e., it will help with the aching immediately afterward, but its effects will be temporary (which doesn't mean it's not worth doing if it helps). One thing to consider would be the possibility of your knees sliding forward excessively at the bottom of your squat. I'd generally recommend putting them on during your warm-ups, but it's not a huge deal either way. Some people will treat it like their belt and put it on sometime around their last warm-up.

You can indeed. The "should" part is up to you, but people do use them for running. They typically use a thinner variety than the 5mm and 7mm versions I discuss here, but I've seen people run in 5mm and 7mm versions as well.

I don't have personal experience with either one (mine are Rehband), but we have lifters at our gym who use both and like both. I'd wager the SBD will last longer, and that might make up the price difference.

I imagine you probably could, although I am certainly not a cycling expert. If you’re going to introduce a new variable into your training, as with most things, I would recommend starting on the conservative side of things. For example, trying out knee sleeves on a shorter ride and gradually increasing the distance is probably a better approach than putting them on for a century ride the first time you try them.

No worries:-) While I don’t have any experience wearing them continuously for that much time, as long as you’re not experiencing any negative effects (and presumably, they’re not so tight that they’re negatively affecting circulation), then I don’t see any problems with it.

I have 4mm knee sleeves for when I hike up mountains with my dog. I also use the 4mm with my squats. After watching your video I’m guessing I should upgrade to 7mm for my squats and leave the 4mm for my hikes?!?!?

If only one knee is bothersome, then just use a sleeve on that knee. If both knees are a little cranky, then use one on each knee.

Roger that, and already done :-) That video was a while ago. It's interesting, though - have you by any chance checked your RU-vid volume settings? For what it's worth, my RU-vid volume is usually set to high, and as for my devices, I don't have my phone past 1/3 volume and I don't have my computer past 1/2 volume when I listen to it. Any louder than that, and it becomes annoyingly loud.
