Complete Guide to LIFTING STRAPS - How, Why, When to Use!

Learn how to use WRIST STRAPS aka lifting straps. Straps are a great option for deadlifts and other pulling exercises when grip becomes the limiting factor from lifting heavier weights.
Be careful that your lifting straps don't become a crutch - the deadlift is a grip exercise as much as it is a full body exercise. Only use straps for your heaviest sets (such as rack pulls) or sets with a high number of reps (such as Romanian deadlifts).

Lol, I'm using soft loop straps. They'd technically work if my hands were tiny, but my hands are in fact big. I knew a lifting strap was built similarly, but i couldn't get them to work with shrugs so I ended up here.

Anthony, wrapping it around the bar multiple times (either way) also prevents you from a quick release, which is really not what you want in power lifting. In a panic injury situation, the last thing in the world you want is to be lashed to the bar to any extent for 5 seconds longer than necessary. So besides from being functionally the right thing (wrapping under once, against the curl of the hand) it's a little dangerous to wrap many times. As for the length; My only guess about that over the years is that if they didn't, they wouldn't sell because of all the people misunderstanding them. Also, once in a great while you'll have a bar that has smoothed over in a way that chalk simply doesn't help; The knurling is either gone or in the wrong place. In that case, a _single additional_ wrap is necessary. Cotton against steel doesn't always behave. Though even then, the length is silly.
@nihlify
@nihlify 2 года назад
@@xGaviJax Maybe so they don't "uncurl" after one wraparound. If it's too short, the stiffness would easily pull it back over the bar (at least with the leather ones), which would be annoying.

I’ve always avoided using straps because I wanted to work on grip strength. Now that I’m 65 I found out the reason for the extreme pain in my thumbs is due to arthritis (diagnosed by hand specialist- I was hoping it was something more treatable). The doctor says I need to use straps or whatever can allow me to minimize the use of my thumbs in pulling type exercises. This change is working wonders! But now that I’m doing lighter weights and more reps (due to age) I’m a little self conscious of using straps for relatively light weights. Oh well, getting old sucks but at least I can keep lifting.

I've got nerve issues from my military service and that has definitely affected my grip strength; I can't hold a bar with over 250 on it for more than 8 reps at a time now. I have been doing a slow buildup of weight using a 5-3-1 plan, and I've gotten to exactly the point where alternating grips are insufficient during the heavy sets, so I just invested in some straps because the weight itself is not the problem. I got them out of the package, put them on, and realized I had no clue what I was doing! Thanks for the helpful video!

I didn't see the value in straps until I began lifting heavier weight, trying to work out my back. I don't rely solely on them, only when I need them. On back day, I try to do my first couple exercises without them, but by about the 3rd/4th exercise, my forearms are useless, yet my back still needs more work. These will get you through it and keep your back day from becoming forearm day. How can you expect your grip strength to get you through 20-30 sets and still actually be hitting your back effectively?? The trick is: dont use them for everything. Let back day fatigue your forearms too, but just as they're basically all worn out, use the straps. That's what I do at least, and I've been seeing amazing results. Able to lift heavier weight,im not speeding through/ pausing to let my arms take a rest while my back is barely tired at all etc. They really do work and a must-have for anyone looking to build them wings imo.

Thank you so much for uploading this, by far the best explanation I've found. Just ordered my first set of straps since my grip is quite weak and I'm starting to pull 140kg regularly and losing my grip is causing me to finish my sets often even though I feel like I have more in the tank. I also feel my weak grip is stopping me having the confidence to push for 150 and above.

This was very helpful, I still want to train my grip, but I find after 3-4 sets of deadlifts, regardless of the amount of weight my hands start to give out, limiting my ability to push myself. Definitely gonna look into purchasing a quality set of these. Update: I’ve recently invested in a pull up bar, and dead hang has improved my grip strength quite a bit, but additionally a nice quality set of straps (not the cheapo $12 ones; learned my lesson there) will make maxing deadlift a lot less taxing on the wrist.

*_GOOD JOB!!!_* Thank GOD people are finally addressing the wrapping UNDER the bar against the curl of the hand instead of the wrong _over_ the bar. The only thing I'd add to your video is that wrapping more than once isn't just unnecessary, it's technically dangerous, because it doesn't allow you a quick enough release of the weight. I also position the wraps precisely as you across the palm, but frankly, that's absolutely secondary to the bar wrap direction.

I was experimenting with deadlifts on the Smith machine (standing on 2 25's per foot, Planet Fitness limitations) and at around 350 lbs. I was realizing that I *have* the strength to do a few reps of that *except* for my grip strength. Just managed it with alternate grip but my hands were absolutely shot afterwards. Bought some straps, this was the exact vid I needed man - thank you so much. Excited to get back in there and (safely) see what I can do.

Thanks for the video! I'm doing slower tempo deadlifts for high rep and kept having to rest pause even though I had more energy left. Had no clue how to set this up, really helpful explanation!

Great video, straight to the point and tells us exactly what we need and why. I've never needed straps, but now I've noticed in my rows, pull downs and deadlift variants, my grip is giving out. Thanks very much 👍

Needed this!!!! Thankyou, my right wrist clicks a lot and injured easily so straps are super helpful when deadlifting heavy!!

Thought I knew how to use straps and then I figured out I’ve been mixing up my left and right straps lolol

Just got a pair of wrist wraps delivered and was clueless how to set them up. Found you in a google search. Thank you! This was super helpful - now tomorrow, I get to practice since it's deadlift day. :)

This video really helped me out! Just got my lift wraps, and I got way more reps on deadlift (4 x 8 reps). Thank you so much?
