If your knife is sharp, you don't need serrations to cut through rope and webbing. I find that serrations sometimes catch on the strands for these materials and actually inhibit the cutting task, where as a plain edged blade does not. Thanks for the video Aaron. - danofiremano

Hey, I know this is one of your older vids, but if you are reading this I would like to give you a big thank you. This video was very helpful in deciding if I wanted to get a partially serrated knife or a plain edge knife. Thank you!

Thanks for the vid! In my experience, serrations are good for fibrous materials, like grass, textiles, reed, rope, etc. When it comes to wood shavings for fires, my serrated knife also makes finer shavings and feather sticks. The real deal breaker though, and maybe the top reason why people are discouraged from serrated blades, is the sharpening process. Cheers

not really. only one side of the blade has serrations which means you have one less side to resharpen. A plain edge has to be resharpened on both sides

Very well done! It made my decision to go plain edge. Thanks!

Thank you. I never could understand why they would ruin the blade belly by adding serrations. This has explained a lot. And even though I have used serration for cutting para-cord, it left it ragged. Sure, the serrated edge is sharper, but there is not that much to it and you can use a straight blade for the same thing. Maybe if there were some way to add the serration in some other place, like on the back or a special fold out blade, it would be OK if you needed it. But thanks again for a great deal of much needed info.

Cool video! I prefer plain edge on all my knives unless I'm cutting bread. I keep my knives sharp and never have problems cutting rope and other things you mentioned, I do agree with what you're saying.

Serrations technically lengthen the cutting area because the edge is on a curve. Multiple curves are mathematically longer than a plain edge. So a serrated knife has more cutting power.

I just cut down winery vines, I only had 2 options Ontario Tac 1 and crkt m21 tanto serrated. The CRKT killed the ontario, those serrations did the job.

I prefer Plain edge, but sometimes the damn thing doesn't wanna Hold an edge. I can get some knives sharp enough to shave but they don't hold the edge long enough, mainly because they're most likely cheap chinese steel. But if you're constantly out and about I'd recommend half serration if you don't have time to sharpen your blade. I'm for all as long as it's a knife and I can use it as a tool.

I really appreciated this video. I've been debating a straight edge versus a combo blade for my EDC knife. I think this really helps - thanks!

Say Heah Aaron, Let me start here, A while ago I pressed on the wrong knife not paying attention because the knife came plain and combo, When I got my Benchmade 156 CSK it came serrated, I wrote it off as a lesson and in the box it went only fondling it every once in a while and to wipe it down with oil because it's in D2. But then I watched a video where the guy make feathers with a serrated blade, also Blue Mountain shows how he made feathers to start a fire in a snow storm using a Gerber Prodigy and so does Magnus and even VietNormbo swears serrated blade feather the best. I was embarrassed and elated that I just learned this, By the way my B M 156 CSK is in brand new condition and no longer virgin, Yeah, I have a different outlook on serrated blades, with the right sharpening tool serrated blades are not that hard to sharpen and hold a long edge retention, I feel like I found a new knife, Kewl Beanz, .. ,

I sounds like you never buttoned with your seal pup? believe me its not bad, your LMF's and SOGGY comboo's really do well, still I'm a plain edge guy, but I do carry with me a medium C.S. Vaquero fully serrated from tip to end, and I use it alot as my E.D.C. but your right they are tools and right tool for right job.

Serrated for ropes, seat belts, tough thick boxes, loafs of bread, and the biggest reason they exist SELF-DEFENSE in slashing. Nothing causes more trauma except maybe a Kukri or a Karambit. And they make those in serrated models also. I prefer plain edge also though.

But in a self defense scenario, clothing can bunch up in the serrations. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TNdca5hO22U.html go to about 2:50 in that video to see what I mean.

A serrated blade will leave a nastier scar but that only matters if the victim survives. A toothed edge is going to create more resistance to the motion of the blade. If serrated blades are more effective then why dont all hunting knives, arrows, spears come serrated?

Why does Victorinox put serrations on the front part of the blade and plain edge in the back on its One-handed Trekker?

I realky dont care, I can do all jobs with or without serration. Of course I dont want a mora with serration. But for general outside activities....I dont cares. I can do carving, batoning, chopping, feather sticking, food prep, fire, cleaning game, etc using both. For self defense folder, y love serrations. For everything else, american express :-)

Those of you who prefer to always carry a plain edge: have you ever attempted to cut a wet rope, large cable-ties, thoroughly butcher a deer (cutting through cartillage, tendons, etc.), cut baling wire (that has gotten wrapped around a cow's leg), or cut your way out of a tall briar patch (where wounded deer always seem to locate themselves)? I've done all of these with my Benchmade Griptilian combo-edge- and it's never failed me yet. And I totally reject the thought that it is more difficult to sharpen. Have you heard of a diamond rod?? I sharpen the plain-edge part of my knives with a Lansky System, hit the serrations with a diamond rod (if needed), and then strop the plain-edge part. It takes me no more than 10-15 minutes per blade.

The TF-809 is a good starter, with a plain edge one side and a serrated portion on the other side, seat belt cutter, and a glass breaker, plus they come with some cool color designs

Seems like the vast majority of "Knife Guys" take a plain edge. My reasons are aesthetics and I also think serrations tend to damage rather easily and they're not real easy to sharpen. That said they will rip though material much easier. So emergency use I would want a fully serrated blade. Edc I know enough use will flatten those serrations down. Thanks Aaron!

Serrations: cutting rope when you don't want to dull the rest of your knife. Also, making scrapings for fire starting. Otherwise, they just get in the way, especially when you're woodworking.
@kiLLjoy24CALI
@kiLLjoy24CALI 7 лет назад
Dick Tracy If you have a knife that gets dull by just cutting a rope, you might wanna consider getting a new knife. I have tried making feathers/scrapings with the serrated knife and it was counter productive. I much rather use the spine of the blade. A plain blade can pretty much do anything you want from a knife. The only use I can think for a serrated knife is to saw a small twig. But c'mon, who's gonna saw a twig?

serrations are for survival situations straight edges are for bushcraft even though both are virtually the exact same because the only difference between the 2 is that your life isn't in danger when doing buschcraft
