Heat treating is without a doubt the most important facet of knife making. This video gives you the scoop on a basic tool for dialing in the heat treating of your knives: the heat treating oven.
Swordsmith Walter Sorrells hosts this series of knife making tutorials devoted to outlining most of the major tools used in the knifemaker's shop. The series consists of over 25 videos aimed at beginning knife makers, giving you an overview of virtually all the major tools you'll need (and some you won't!) when gearing up to make knives -- from the simplest tools to the most complex.

Walter, I have really enjoyed your videos, so this is a hat tip from South Texas, and thanks for taking the time to help us out that are just getting started. I will never do this for a living (I know, never say never) but I plan on making knives (mainly hunting knives) to hand down to my family and friends. And, hopefully I will be able to find something else to spend time with my teenager son, and bond with him in common interests. Hand crafted goods are falling by the way side to cheap crap from China, so I am going to show him the difference between production made toys, and the REAL DEAL. Thanks again. You are a true craftsman, sir.

Excellent video...one of the best items I ever made for my shop was a "power station"...it's a rotary phase converter which also outputs regular 220 through different plug configurations. I can use 3 phase power (machine tools), welders, and even use 220 with a GFCI for when I brew beer.

Mine is a programmable Titangrinder (from San Marino). The absolute electric kiln. 10X11X42 cm dimensions, only 2.5 KWatt consumption, very robust, with 9 programs. Ooooh, how much I love that machine...

Do you know whether there is an opportunity to buy this type of oven without it needs to be shipped all the way from USA? (I'm from DK)

Hi... how are you. I have a question you might know. I been playing around with heat treating a blade in the FORGE and Quenching it in oil . Using a skill saw blade and ONLY HEAT TREATING THE BLADE. NOT BAKING IT IN THE OVEN AND BRINGING IT BACK. I then tested the knife by throwing it at a tree and chopping with it. The blade Did not break and keeped a good edge. I am wondering if this Method is used or is it a bad thing. Blade is fine. No chips, no breaks and still have Flexibility because I did not heat treat anywhere else besides the blade . Did I Discover something new or is this done by knife makers ? Can use your Opinion

Absolutely. If you were setting out to equip a knifemaking shop from the ground up, a heat treating oven would be fairly far down the list of things you'd want. Lots of cheaper ways to get the job done when you're first getting started. In fact, if you're going to specialize in forged blades, you might never want one!

for tempering carbon steel when jsut starting out you can also use a house hold oven cause most of the tempering temperatures can be acheived

If heat treat instructions tell me to bring me blade up to xyz degrees and hold it there for 30 minutes, how do I know when my knife is up to temp to start that countdown? Thanks in advance!

What temperature do you heat treat steel and I'm thinking of using one of the two glass kilns at my school then of course quenching
@SeabassTheImmortal
@SeabassTheImmortal 7 лет назад
It depends on the steel but most steels it's above its curie temperature so around 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. I wouldn't know if the kilns will get that hot but a good test is to put a magnet close to it. If it pulls the steel its not hot enough.

So like 1095 carbon steel cherry red color in a fire then put it in tranny fluid? Then what do I put it on in the oven, I mean what heat and how long? Truthfully I'm only 17 and I'm just getting into this. This has peaked my interest to the max and I really want to get into knife making? I have seen videos but don't really have step by step processes on how to make a knife. And steps suggestions or tips would be super helpful and I thank you for your time

Is it just me or is anyone else having the same problem I'm having? For some reason everyone of your videos where you are talking to the camera, your audio almost shuts completely out! All I hears is a low buzzing sound and can barely here your voice. When it jumps to you narrating when your actually doing the work, I can hear you just fine. But when it jumps back to you filming yourself the audio goes out again. This is happening in every vid you have. I don't have the problem with anyone else or any other vids.

Yeah, it only happens on my older videos and it only effects iPhones 6's (I think). Something to do with the way RU-vid processes audio codecs during file compression. Or something. The sound works fine on most devices. No clue why it happens, but there's nothing I can do about it now.

OK so I am making a knife right now and the steel I'm using is hot rolled so I need to know if it is safe to heat treat it
@WalterSorrellsBlades
@WalterSorrellsBlades 9 лет назад
+Tim Kinsey "Hot rolled" is just an industry term for the way that it's squashed into shape. It doesn't refer to the alloy composition. Without knowing that type of alloy you're dealing with, there's no way to know.

hi, i am a 14 year old knife maker, I am trying to make a fillet knife for a customer right now, and he needs it to be very flexible. what steel do I need to use and how do I heat treat it.
@nielsstevens1377
@nielsstevens1377 8 лет назад
Dempends on what steel you use If you use stainless what i Gues for a filet knife jou should harden The edge not The spine That means you have a hard edge and a flexibel spine
@jwilsonhandmadeknives2760
@jwilsonhandmadeknives2760 7 лет назад
flexibility is a function of geometry, not the steel. The quality of the steel and the heat treat will determine how much a blade will flex before it stays bent or breaks. for fillet knives, AEB-L stainless is a great steel. Begin with .070 inch thickness for a 6inch to 9inch blade (not counting the handle length, just the blade). You'll want to heat treat the blade first and grind it hard. Steel that thin probably won't stay straight if you don't harden it first. I like AEB-L at 61 - 62 HRC hardness. For a decent amount of flex, give the blade a distal taper so that it is about .040 at the heel of the blade and taper it down to about .020 at the tip.
