And THAT is the perfect format for every instructional video ever. Simple, to the point, plenty of accurate verbal instruction, well paced, right length, no annoying/long intro, no annoying music. So, essentially, you've demonstrated much more than just the use of these tools. Thank you!
So much info in so little time. Not only was this video filled with great information but it was inspiring with clever ideas. Great for a beginner. Thank you!
You kept it short and sweet. I loved it. I am such a newbie to Illustrator but I tuned in to find out how to use the eraser tool. For instance, how to make it larger or smaller depending on the space I was using and you went directly there so this was wonderful!
Thanks again! Yet another great video! I've rarely come across a tutorial that tells me precisely what I need to learn in such a sharp, concise, well presented, and creatively insightful manner all in one. I'm also learning and becoming aware of some of the other essential shortcuts and tricks you use as you demonstrate. Just one question - what would be your personal alternative to the knife tool when you need that accuracy you were talking about?
Thank you so much!! been looking how to make a cut in my cabinet drawing that consists out of multiple paths and then stretch it to make the cabinet gain a couple of inches, and never heard of the group selection tool before. And when I saw you using it I heard angels sing and a ray of sunlight touched my face ;-)
hey i love the explanation! but i wished you could explain where the shortcuts originally are in the top bar, like when you pressed command + Y, I dont know the name of that option and i dont know where to find it. besides that, amazing video! much appreciated
First add an anchor point by going to Object > Path > Add Anchor Points. Then use your Direct Selection tool to select just 1 point on an end. Cut and paste in front.
@@GDHT It is :D one more related question ... is there a dialog box that I can write numbers for line or quide lenght, that I could modify the line or guide already exist? for example - it should be precise 23 mm, but I have 89,5 mm. I do precise drawings and I`m grateful for any help.
Hi this tutorial was useful, thank you for posting this for us. I do it like you, but that pieces I selecting and cutting with knife tool doesn't separate of my subject that I designed. what should I do?
Thanks for sahring this. I'm struggling with the brackets topic since forever. I 've been never able to increase the size of the erase or the brush tool with the right and left brackets keys like everybody says. Any clue what could that be?? Thanks in advance ...
@@GDHT Thanks. Now works. I just set the shortcuts myself to < (Increase) and Shift > (decrease). The thing is that only work with the standard Illustrator Brush. Do you any advise how to make that works for every brush?
Maybe you can answer this. When I go to use the knife tool it draws the line but when I go to move the cut out piece the whole shape still continues to move as one item. Is there a setting or button I need to change?
If you've made sure to cut all the way across the object, you shouldn't need to ungroup or anything. You can just use your selection tool to grab the piece and move it. The knife really doesn't have settings, as far as I can tell, so I'm not sure why that's happening.
You know this like the back of your hand, but when you keep telling us the shortcut keys to go back and forth, I get lost because I don't remember what those shortcut keys relate to. Other than that, this was good, but when you say Shift X to do this, what tool is that referring to.
You can't change the hardness in Illustrator, because you're working with vector paths and points. Generally speaking, 'soft blur' and 'fade' effects are better created in raster programs, like Photoshop.
Hmm, I'm not sure. You can try double clicking your eraser tool and resetting it, or try resetting your Illustrator preferences (sometimes they can get damaged and weird things happen).
If your eraser is still not working after converting it to outlines, select the object and right click to select "Release clipping mask". (edit: That solved mine 😆)
@@kae2678 Ok I think I know what's happening- it actually IS cutting into the shape if it's leaving a black stroke. Make sure to go all the way across the shape, then you can move the two pieces apart.
how would you go about connecting the top of the a together, with it being a the same path? Having trouble with something similar I'm doing with an image I've traced
@@GDHT not working for me. I drew an A on paper but didn't connect the - in the /\ so when Ai traces it the middle part isnt closed if that makes any sense lol
@@spacekidastro can you use your pen tool to draw a separate path that connects them? Then select the two pieces (your original /\ path and your new - path) and then do Pathfinder Unite.
Great tutorial, but my Illustrator CC doesn't show a round eraser tool, but a long line that I have to keep changing the angle. How do I get it to be a round tip?
How can I erase a single path between any two points? I can do it in Clip Studio poiant. Just swipe the erase tool over a line and watch it disappear up to the nearest point as if I were to select and delete.
@@GDHT That's the obvious way to do it but I want to be able to use an erase function with a pen. Not have to go "click, delete, click, delete, click, delete" or have to worry about orphan points or decide whether to select the path or the anchor. In Clip Studio you just swipe the pen over the line and it instantly deletes up to the nearest intersection.
i am having the hardest time with a simple erasing of a image in a layer so that one image sits over the other. i got apps that work better than this. someone help please. how do you use the eraser tool?
I actually don’t use the eraser tool very often at all, I use the lasso tool to delete points. But illustrator works best with complete shapes so you’ll have to combine those shapes after you delete the points. It does take some getting used to, but if you use illustrator a lot, You’ll find it is a great program!
can you tell me how i can delete lines crossing inside a word cause i want to cut the text uit my plotter machine but inside the word he cuts out these lines that goes straight true the letter i dont know how to do it
If you have a PNG file, you'll first need to convert it to vector (PNG is raster). Here's a video on how to do that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gyLSZIbXI0g.html
I have oversized cursive text that I'm trying to cut(scissors) at points to make it fit in my laser cutter bed with the end result being a complete word from one continuous piece of wood.
@@deltalovesdobes Using the scissors will result in having open paths, and you probably want closed paths. I would use the pathfinder tool for this. Draw a rectangle around half of the letter, then open the pathfinder window. Select the whole letter and rectangle, then use the bottom left pathfinder to Divide. You'll need to delete parts of it, but you'll be left with the letter sliced in half.
How do I change the softness of the eraser tool? Because i know in photoshop you can make it very soft but in illustrator I can't seem to find any settings for that. Thank you!
Hi there! You're correct, there is no way to change softness of the eraser like in Photoshop...it's because you're working with vector objects instead of raster. One workaround: you could copy the object in Illustrator and paste in Photoshop as pixels. Then you could use a soft eraser on it. I hope that helps!
