My compound arrived finally so I decided to give it a shot and I can confirm this method did not work out. I tried different knives at different angles, they all have no bite but once it slices, it glides beautifully, which leads me to the conclusion the edge is rounded during the buffing. Just like you said. It's sharp but it's not V shaped and more like U shaped sharp. I redid all the knives by hand with the same compound and now they are absolute fire! Just takes so much longer by hand, I had high hopes for the bench grinder.

Your failure had nothing to do with the grinder.

It worked excellent for me. Try using very, very light pressure. Let the buffer do the work.

I just bought a new bench grinder today W/ a buffing wheel. After some careful modification of the grinder's spin direction, I set it up on my work-bench. I didn't even have to use the grinding wheel on my knives, just the compound loaded buffer. The result: INSTANT RAZOR SHARPNESS.

As far as I understand, you don't do it flat to the wheel but more like 90° to the weel. Put the stick of compound in the middle of the wheel facing you and push it into the wheel a little. Not at the top where you put the knive. Much lower, like where the bar from the machine meets the wheel. It should load much quicker that way. Hope it helps

Thank you . I use the method you said on my another buffer. But this buffer turns in the opposite direction. So I have to put the compound on the top of the wheel. And you are right. Next time, I will put the compound bar on the wheel at 90 degrees.

I'm confused about your conclusion in the description where you say it's a fail. Didn't you get a lower BESS value in the end aka the knife got sharper?
@sharpcokorea
@sharpcokorea 5 лет назад
Because the edge was rounded. In other word, the angle of very edge was increased. It's not good.
@Leviathanshadex

@@sharpcokorea Maybe it's possible to reduce the amount of edge rounding by holding the knife at an even sharper angle to the wheel? Ofcourse, you'd need a much more firm grip on the knife, for fear of it being tossed by the wheel. Also, a slightly rounded edge might not slice as readily, but it will also be much less likely to chip, hence the necessity for a micro-bevel.

@@Leviathanshadex You're right. I'll try it with an another compound next time.

노랑색 버퍼를 어디서 구입할 수 있는지요? 좌표를 알려주실 수 있을까요?

This buffing wheel is not for fine finishing of any sharp metal product. The surface is not absorbing the compound because of the cotton fibers are too dense/ the compound may be too hard. Besides all edging on a buffing wheel, even correct buffing wheels are very difficult to correctly sharpen , because of angles and pressures that must be perfect. What was shown on this video is absolutely incorrect. Completely amateur!
