Yes, there is a buffing compound that I put on the wheel. Sorry, I did not realize it had been edited out. You can see that the edge of the wheel is white and the compound stick is sitting right below the wheel. You can this compound anywhere buffing wheel are found. I will also put a link in the description where you can buy the compound.
@@PaganWizard He says he will put a "link in the description where you can buy the compound." So the question is: where is the description? description of what? I suggest you put the link in the REPLY as well as in the description.
Make a second MDF wheel the same way you made this one, then on your band saw, using the finest blade you have, make 1/2 inch deep cuts every 2 inches. These relief cuts will help keep your blade cool, this will make more sense as I continue. Mount your new wheel to the opposite side of the grinder as your original sharpening disk. After you go through the finishing stage as you did with the first wheel, apply a light coat of jewelers rouge to your new wheel. This second wheel will be your finishing wheel, used to remove any fine burrs, or wire left on the blade, leaving you with an absolutely perfect edge. If you're concerned about tying up your bench grinder with 2 sharpening disks, pick up a cheap bench grinder from Harbor Freight, Craigslist or even a garage sale, and make it your dedicated sharpening station, completely freeing up your better quality grinder for other operations. This sharpening station is now perfect for sharpening everything from a pocket knife, to a kitchen knife, and even an axe head. You can also unbolt the grinder from it's base, turn it 180 degrees, and reattach it to the base. Now, the switch will be on the front of the grinder, and the top of the wheels will turn away from you.
Good video I’d like to add that to make using this method safer I plan to use a speed control to slow the wheel down it may take me a little longer but that’s okay. Regards, Tom
Help! Made one of these today. Double thick 1/2" MDF glued together. Used a chisel and sandpaper on a block to get it smooth and round. Charged it with white compound. And all I could do is blunt my knives, which were sharp before. I use stones and a strop to get hair shaving sharp easily. I thought MDF would be an upgrade. I have a variable speed bench grinder and I definitely have some side to side wobble on the wheel. Is this why I am finding blunt knives after doing this?
The wobble is definitely not good. That means it out of balance or not flat and round. To sharpen the knives, it all about the angle. It should be approximately 20 degree angle.
My channel could show the don’ts and really don’t type!!! But I have no idea what I gotta do to start my own channel... I live on a budget so my tools aren’t top notch so I watch the experienced people like you and others and at this point I want everything and my biggest purchase is the skil table saw but still want a jointer and planet and a router table too.... you keep making your videos and give me many ideas and dreams of things to make and buy...but disability in Canada don’t pay so much like I make $672 a month so I depend on people like you so when I do get tools I don’t have to replace them every month as they break down or do a terrible job!!!!
You have to just start. Use the camera on your phone and film one video and upload it. Then do another and another before long you will have many subscribers. Everyone starts the same. Good luck
I don't blame you for showing off your C-N-C machine. If I had one I would, too. So of those sarcastic remarks are from pure envy. Neat idea. Will try this out. Thanks.
Thank you. The first disc that I made was using the band saw. Maybe that would upset some people, then there is a jig saw that could be used. How about a coping saw. I really appreciate your comments, you hit the nail on the head. It just shows that you can never make everyone happy and I am not trying to. I'm just showing people how I do things in my shop. Your comments are perfect. I think you are 100% correct.
Try using thick marine plywood instead as mdf is more dangerous and u can blow outs with it over time buddy.. Just a safety tip😉 iv used this method for my chisels🤙 shout out from ireland 🤙🍀
I've heard that if you use a wheel or grinder that spins too fast, the edge on your knife can get overheated, which ruins the heat treatment of the knife steel, and makes the knife go dull alot quicker. So I have always tried to avoid sharpeining on any electric sharpener or fast spinning wheel
We don’t ALL have CNC machines but I wish I did!!!! I have to start a RU-vid video channel for wood carving and tools!!!!! I’m buying a lot of things Willy nilly to get back into working with wood again!!!!!
Makes me wanna run out and buy a C-N-C machine... and a new multi-purpose shop to put it in! Then I’ll run over to the courthouse and sign those divorce papers I’m sure that will be coming! But I do love C-N-C machines. Nice video Paw Paw! Thx 😊
Black Friday is coming. I have no idea what promotion they will run at Inventables, but, you have to wonder if that will be the time. Also, you can tell you wife that you will make money with the CNC and pay for itself. Many people do just that.
Paw Paw’s WorkShop - Thanks, that is a great idea. Woodworking is a hobby that I picked back up. I love fabricating things. I built race cars, and now building a new Desert Race Truck (2017 Ford Raptor) for next years racing season, which started out as a hobby (that became a runway freight train, because I picked up several major sponsorships this year). However, more money goes out then comes in, a CNC machine would be great, because we are hand building the specialty parts for the truck. My day job is working as an Army civilian employee... after I served 21 years of active duty as a soldier. My Racing Team is called Toy Soldiers Racing. I’ve been seriously considering fabricating a light, hardwood center console, using ash wood because of its strength and is light weight. With all of the technology in modern race vehicles, I thought it would be nice to have a nice hardwood instrument/radio center console as a touch of old school wood components in a world gone mad with Carbon Fiber. Your thoughts?
No real reason. Most times I will use a waste board. I was planning on sanding and shaping once on the grinder and was not concerned about a few hundredths of an inch.
Do you use any honing compound on the MDS wheels when sharpening knives. Also can the wheel be cut to shape with a Jig saw and then turned down with a chisel and then finished smooth with a belt sander. Most of us do not have CNC machines
It may be possible. The hole in the center must be the same. (Most likely it will be). The guard will likely need to be removed. This potentially poses a safety hazard. Depending on the design of the grinder the wheel may hit the base. Bottom line is you need to try it and see. Please be aware of the safety issues.
Yes, but that's not the point. You can use a jig saw, scroll saw, band saw and even a table saw. The fact that I wanted to get across is how effective it is to sharpen the knife blade with MDF. Thank you very much for your comment.
@@billwms8490 any polishing compound will do, im a jeweller and a wood turner an use this on my chisels. I find the white compound sticks work best of all ✌️🍀
What the heck is MDF? You don't tell us. It's a mistake to use acronyms without explaining them, because not everyone knows what they mean. (This from a professional educator.)
Medium Density Fiberboard. Basically sawdust and glue. You make a valid point. I will be covering this and much more in my beginner series that I am working on now. I am accepting input now for the upcoming videos in this video series covering basic tools and putting together a shop on a budget. Thank you for your input.
You are a skilled craftsman for sure. It seems, to do the job correctly, you need expensive equipment including a computer program. Not helpful to guys like me. I guess I'll stick to my Lansky.
You may be right but if I did not explain it well then I would feel that I left out important information that may help many people. You must realize that many people from around the world have different levels of experience on every topic. For you, maybe it just a review, for others it may be the first time hearing the information
I tried it and it dulled the crap out of my knife. Didn't know about the buffing compound until reading the comments. I can't see that making any difference.
Well, it is available to all. Use the best tool for the job. If you do not have a CNC then use a band saw. If you do not have a band saw, use a jig saw. You can even use the table saw.
Sorry, you lost me at the first half of the video. Too much time on the CNC machine. I get it, you love your CNC, but I came here for the sharpening aspect. I’m not singling you out. Many craftsman will produce a video in a wood/machine shop with very specialized or expensive tools which most people can’t afford or have access to. Didn’t learn much if that was your goal.
I understand. There are many ways to cut out a wheel. Jig saw, band saw, scroll saw, even a table saw can cut the wheel and yes a CNC machine. To sharpen a knife is the easy part of the video. Spinning plywood or MDF with a little compound and you're done. It works great.
Paw Paw .... you missed the point in easily trying to help DIY beginners. One would be better off purchasing the commercial product. Sorry, not much help here for the common man to “sharpen” their knives. How about a video without using your “CNC” machine.
Why not use a machine or tool that -- most likely -- the majority of viewers might have at their disposal, that you, yourself admit would do just as well. Look at how many individual people have been irritated at you showing off your expertise...........
There are multiple ways to cut this out. I stated that. This is a CNC and woodworking channel. What if you had no power saws at all. Lets go way back in history. Grab a knife and start cutting. Maybe that is still to modern. Tools always evolve. Either evolve with it or stay in the dark ages. Your choice. For me being an old guy, I chose to move into the 21st century. I like technology. It makes our lives easier.
Hell just grab a beaver by his neck , set his nose on the board, an hit his butt 8 times for board. Now for that half inch center hole 🕳, well that’s tricky, grease your finger up 🙈 you see where I’m going here? Lol
Why in the world did he make this video? If you have a cnc raise your hand. He said don’t let the knife dig in but he didn’t explain what direction the sharpening wheel needs to be turning to prevent that. If someone gets hurt it will be his fault. Misleading description of the video. Not about how to sharpen but about making a wheel. Thumbs down on this one.
I don’t know what video you watched but he explained it pretty well I thought. He showed the direction of the wheel turning and he showed how to hold a knife so as to not dig into the wheel. Pretty obvious. So if you gave him a thumbs down for that I think you’re kind of a douche or an imbecile
