I can definitely confirm that a bright blue is much easier for a man that is colorblind to spot in the woods. Sometimes orange, depending on the shade, can be harder for us to spot.

DCA, I loved the mental exercise too! I started by loving the choices he began with! I'm jazzed you got engrossed and that it's a commonality between you, him & I. Knives are, like many hobbies, more fun with others. Because of this, this video was extra fun to watch and I thank you & others for making and posting it. I have fun watching Knife Center videos, especially the new knives on Thursday after the DBK channel video. Gratitude for Thomas chiming in and that when he does, there's subtitles on what he just said because it's important too and welcome to hear from him on top of what you say. Really glad for this amount of fun in my knife life. Good job!!!!!

What is the "spiritual successor" to the Ontario Rat 1 & 2? It used to be they were the default knife recommendations for as cheap a knife as possible for most people's needs. What is that knife now? The QSP Penguin? The CJRB Feldspar?

Hi Knife Center. DCA maybe you could mention that there is a fire steel with tender that would attach to the cork screw in the victorinox and you can use the saw to strike it. Knife Center sells that accessory I believe. Have a great day Thomas and DCA.

Hey, DCA (and team), hope you’re keeping well. I’ve been shaving with a straight razor for about 8 years because I enjoy both feeling smug about sustainability *and* self-mutilation. Almost all the straight razors I can find are carbon steel - why is this? Are high end stainless steels and/or particle steels not suitable for a straight razor? Very much enjoying the channel.
@seancollins3711
@seancollins3711 Год назад
That would be because carbon steels are tougher and will hold an edge longer (most of the time) than some modern stainless steels for a fraction of the price. Because of the nature of most razor blades out there today, which are "disposable", there is no real need to spend time resharpening them when you can buy a pack of them and have new ones ready to go, companies can mass produce these blades for very little money. Razors need to be very thin and very sharp and shaving beard hair is actually quite hard on a blade so thin and sharp, you would have to sharpen a stainless blade more often than a carbon steel blade. To summarize, carbon steel blades will hold up the the abuse better for cheaper. Like with anything in the blade world, you can usually find what you want with a bit of searching and if you really want a stainless razor, I say go for it but it would be in your best interest to learn how to sharpen them as well because you don't want to toss a high quality stainless steel in the trash.

Why is the name reverse assigned to some of these blade shapes that do not fit a conventional shape? To me, reverse would imply the tip and tang changing places. Therefore as the Master of the Rock and Roll Universe, I declare the terms "Inverted" or "Upside Down", henceforth be used when describing unconventional or modified blade shapes. This is the way.

Your comment about knife enthusiasts not buying good kitchen knives was interesting. I have liked knives as long as I can remember but I did not start collecting high quality knives until a few years ago. What got me started was when we got tired of lesser quality kitchen knives and purchased a good set. I realized that I had never owned a “good” pocket knife. Regarding kitchen knives, I think there's totally a niche market that spends crazy amounts on chef knives. Chefs especially. But even Greenwich housewives😉 they shell out hundreds on Damascus and or Henkels that are so inferior to what could be! This has always confused me. Where's an m390, vanax super clean, or heck, maxamet, 15V, K390 chefs knife with food f&f🙏 If I were a knife maker I would fill that void. Cuz there's definitely a void in the market. I love these videos? DCA gets more screen time on my tv than anyone from Hollywood ! Just wanted to add a couple things-too bad the Leatherman Juice CS4 is no longer in production, it would add serious “juice” to Carlos’ blue hiking kit. That model only came in blue if I remember correctly-mine is, I’ve had it in my pocket so long it is no longer under warranty! Also, I’ve seriously wondered about the lack of super steel kitchen knives. I am a very hard user and mostly stay away from the latest, greatest steels, my edc is a Buck 110 and you will not ever convince me there is anything better (yes, I’ve owned a few $200+ knives). I like a blade that I can completely wreck during the day and fix while watching just one Knife FAQ! That said, I would love to have a Magnacut or 20CV kitchen knife! I think the kitchen is the perfect place forget about chipping and making edge retention king. Seems almost exactly opposite to me-put VG 10 on EDC knives and M4 in the kitchen! Also DCA, could you do a Knife FAQ that focuses more on the right knife steels for the job rather than whatever is in vogue? 420HC, 12c27, 14c28n, etc, are still really hard to beat in hard use, readily maintained steels. Also, why does the knife community have such low regard for 420HC? It is almost the same thing as 12c27… It is one of the best hard use stainless steels going. These are simply the best outdoor steels going, edge retention isn’t always king, keeping an edge serviceable is. However, I think the opposite would be true in the kitchen. Could you possibly do an episode that focuses 100% on the merits of the steel for the intended for job without regard for price or whether or not it is considered a premium steel-explore the subject a bit more in depth?

Recently my wife and i suffered a tragedy that caused her to spend several days and nights hospitalized. And i of course stayed with her every second. But out of respect for the hospitals rules, i was forced to leave my favorite EDC in the car that first unexpected night. Because rain tends to pour, the car was broken into in the garage, and everything including my Spyderco Sage 5 LW was stolen. I love that model, i think its legit the perfect pocket knife. My question to you is... when i replace it, do you think its worth spending the little bit extra for the carbon fiber Sage 5? I have a dprint run Lil Native with peel ply CF, and i like the feel. What are your thoughts on the bi directional GRN Spyderco uses? And do you think its "light" enough to make it worth saving $40, specifically on the Sage 5? I couldnt afford anything but the LW 4 years ago, but now its not an issue, and your thoughts and opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

DCA, looking for a recommendation: I have the Sencut Citius and I love how it has such a narrow profile without being too narrow like the CEO. Looking for something similar with better steel under 300. I am currently looking at the ZT 0707, any others I might be missing that I should consider. Bonus points for a milled pocket clip but not essential.

@high end kitchen knives. Cannot talk for others. But I was looking at the "Miyabi Black 5000MCD67", but ultimately decided that in that price range, I can get a fully custom knife, designed by me... and that is what I did. I would not be surprised if that is a route many knife enthusiasts do, as these are probably the most accessible custom knives.

Take Two, Dear DCA and Thomas, I am looking for a "legal" knife that would be okay in Chicago and other "slightly larger than average" ignorant cities. I was thinking either the Spyderco Chicago or Squeak SLIPIT but would love your opinion on these or any other alternatives?

You're too easy on the folder-for-food-prep crowd. I believe the only thing that will change them is shame and humiliation. Mock them for their puny and inadequate Spydiechefs, and recoil with disgust at their cheese and peanut butter stuffed pivots. If not you, then maybe we could get Gordon Ramsay to comment on the blade-handling skills of a few of our favorite you-tubers testing folders. Still, I'm glad to hear you nudging people in the right direction. Kitchens offer one of the best daily opportunities to play with knives, so it's deeply satisfying to use quality blades. And companies are responding--I love my Magnacut Bradford chef's blade.

Hello everyone! I know you are the Knife Center and all that, but do you have recommendations for (urban focused) edc pouches that're touching on the larger side, so they would be good for putting them into a backpack? (Clarification: I'm not looking for those tiny ones that are made for pockets and belts, but also not those huge ones that could be annoying to place on the table and would be too unhandy because of their size. I also wouldn't mind a molle system on it, for my TOPS FDX 66, or velcro loops for velcro hook patches. The more sub-pockets inside the better, so it stays organized after a tumble!)

Hi DCA, in a few videos you’ve talked about “disposable” knives, how would you define the genre? What would be the icon of said genre? Assuming the camp plus edc is a major contender, anything with a finger safe lock?

99% of people buying fix or folding benchmade/esee/mora/spyderco or any brand are knives lover, but 99% of people buying kitchen knives are just some random people who want to cook, that the reason why kitchen knives must be afordable imo

AMEN!! When I get a knife I look at A) how does it feel in pocket. That’s where it spends most its time. No pocket anchors. B) blade, sliciness and how thin behind the edge. C) feel in hand.

People who want super steels tend not to have grown up tool users so they want stuff that is well away from moms or grannys kitchen knife or a steak or paring knife to feel HARD. It is why the rambo knives, the sharpened pry bars, now super steels are so EXTREEME. That is RUINED if you kitchen knife is like your HARD knife in any way shape or form. Only the rare few appreciate a tools cradle to grave function over form.

Hey DCA and Thomas, Im headed to Florida and need a good pocket knife I can use at the beach or even in the water. Do you have a preference between 20cv and Magnacut? Also, could you recommend a small fixed blade for the same tasks? I'd prefer to keep it $150 or less.

Hey dca I've been on the hunt for a perfect work knife for over a year now. And bought a lot of knives in the process. I really enjoy the cold steel tough lite, only problem is I'm sharpening a lot. I'm looking for a similar size with the same blade shape but want a liner/ frame lock and a steel with better edge retention. Looking between 50 and 100 dollars Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks

DCA, I am a scout leader and have two Eagles graduating from high school. It's that time of year! One is heading to AZ the other to GA. I want to keep them active in the outdoors and present them with a knife that they can carry while camping and hiking in those states, but keep them out of trouble with the college authorities. I was thinking an SAK or multi-tool, but wanted to tap into your experience and opinion. Under $80 would be great. What are your thoughts? NAM

Wow, those Honey Badger knives look great, with one exception. Chinesium...me thinks it's a good time to avoid China as it will continue to get more difficult to get product from China as we move forward. Speaking for myself, I would never buy a knife made in China, call me old fashioned.

Question David...I have an old Case Sodbuster with a carbon blade, it was always very easy to sharpen and held the edge very well. One day, I was cutting up a bunch of apples and didn't clean the blade as I normally do, the next morning the blade had a very dark patina. After that, I was never able to get the knife to take an edge. So the question is...can a blade get such a patina that it burns the temper out of the blade? And, if so, what if anything, can be done to fix it?

Gentleman. Blade shape question. Where do some of the names originate ? I realize that some pertain to the function Ie; skinner and boning . While I know there is a " Thomas Reversetanto " . Is there a Mr. Warncliff ? Or a Dave Nesmuk ? Great show thank you for all the informative content

Dearest Doug funny, i have been having a rough time with kydex sheathing. I left 3 in the sun in the jeep and now they barley lock. They are so heat sensitive. Do you know a way to fix them? Crkt minimalist, cold steel bird and trout and the cold steel spike.

Hey Mr. Anderson. I'm a large guy with big paws. Seems like all the new knives coming out are around the 7 inch side with very slim handles and no contouring to them what so ever. Can you suggest some knives that are bigger and have nice countered handle that look nice around the 100.00 price range

Question for next time: I was always interested in the Gerber LHR but sadly it's no longer available. I was wondering if there is a similar knife, especially one with the safety lock on the sheath that the LHR had.
