An opinel is a great first knife. They even make a kid friendly version with a rounded tip. That’s what I started both my kids on when they were 6.

Opinel is a decent choice. I am partial to Victorinox (First Victorinox model in this case) but Opinel is much more DIY friendly.

Yes, drops are more likely and more consequential on boats--so it's a good thing those two both have lanyard holes. I picked up my lanyard habit on the water.

The handle on your Canteen is one of my favorite, that I own. When I first held the knife I thought, WOW huge handle but it didn't take long to realize just how good in use and well thought out the Canteen's handle is. great job by you and LT's crew!

First knife for me was a SAK similar to a classic. Got it when I was about 9 or 10. It just had an additional small red flashlight on it. The emblem was the button. I learnt quickly not to put my fingers in the path of the blade when closing it after getting bitten quite deeply when closing it. Also learnt to make sure which side is the sharp side after getting bit when I accidentally cut with the spine. I'm not a big believer in "youth" model blades with blunt tips. Let kids poke and cut themselves and they'll learn to respect the knife more.

I just had a thought on the question for a good first knife for a kid. Traditionally, kids were started off with a slip joint, since they don’t lock abs that makes them less dangerous overall (less lethal anyway). The trouble is that slip joints have a strong back spring that can cause the blade to close forcefully on your fingers either when opening or closing the knife, if your grip slips. A safer alternative would be the new “double detect” knives that have no back spring which causes them to clamp shut if you let go of them. That way a kid can partially close the knife without being at risk of the blade closing on them unexpectedly.

I gave my two boys their first knives here recently. Got them the crkt squid. good starter blade length and not an aggressive point and only around 20$ because I’m sure they’ll loose them eventually.

i’ve given four boys their first knife and so far the oldest was eight years old and I got him the spyderco manbug with the wharncliffe blade because it fits his hand because it’s absolutely tiny and there’s no pocket clip.

Kershaw’s got a few knife and bottle opener combos like the shuffle, cinder, pub, and the one I use the most, the antic. But for outdoor bbqs, I always have TOPs bartender defender knife/bottle opener around my neck.

My first knife was a LL Bean edition Gerber LST that my dad gave me when I was about 6 and I still have it and it's still in good shape except for having a scratched up blade and I'm now 30. It's still a nice 5th pocket knife but I usually carry a sodbuster in the 5th pocket.

Hey DCA, I am newer to your channel but I am very fermiliar with your website. I love a sheep's foot knife blade shape! I have a hard time finding a fairly reasonably priced knife with a nice sheep's foot for EDC. I am also a fan of multitools, but that is not necessarily a deal breaker. But my perfect knife would be a sheep's foot blade and pair of scissors in the same tool. Thank you for the videos, I always learn a lot.

This is for M Gee, Slip joint: I come from a non lock jurisdiction and have researched this question. The lowly Douk Douk was and still is used all over North Africa and France. French Laguioles can work, on both I would add a thumb stud . I personally prefer a finger choil (added safety) .The best of these for you stated purpose would be Boker Plus xs\xl . Spyderco UK for unobtrusive quick deployment .But.... be careful you will need a lot of practice to make them work without loosing your fingers :)

For kids its going to depend on your kid but I always recommend a folding locking blade or a fixed blade and never a slip joint or SAK type knife. SAKs are more like a second knife in my opinion once they learn proper blade control with a locking mechanism or fixed blade. My sons first knife was a Mora Pro C because of the guard, ease of sharpening and so forth.

Other options for the Persian/upswept blade is many Pinkerton designs. The CJRB 'Arroyo' comes immediately to mind as a budget option.

With regards to your sailing recommendation, you're on the right track with size recommendation and the blunt tip. There are two considerations that you didn't mention; sailing knives are paired with a marlin spike. Fixed blades have a marlin spike as a separate item, folders have the marlin spike built in. The second thing you need to consider is the lines you are cutting. High tech dyneema lines need don't cut the same as polyester lines... choosing serrated to rip through a line or flat blade can make a big difference in an emergency situation vs a rerigging situation. You'll see what I mean if you try to cut through some high tech line in a hurry.

P.s. other features you want in a sailing knife are a shackle key. Also a lanyard loop. I've never seen a dedicated split ring function on a sailing knife, but I'd kill for that on a sailing knife too. ⛵️

My cousin has had an Endura 4 for about ten years that he's never sharpened once. Used to use it to pry and for construction.. lost the tip. Still works and if he sharpened it would be fine. Spyderco is legit for longevity.. just make sure you get a stainless steel if you don't get what a carbon steel is.

An outstanding FAQ episode DCA. A couple of observations with the boat knives choices. As was pointed out by others, using the lanyard hole underway is the best way to keep a dropped knife from going over the side. Originally intended for use back in the days of sail, a lanyard ring, bail, or hole on a knife was used to secure ones knife, out to an arms length, to ones person. That would prevent dropping your knife over the side or worse dropping ones knife from a yardarm, 30 feet or so onto a crowded deck. Both of which were frowned upon. Secondly, nothing dulls a knife edge faster underway than having to cut synthetic lines, especially nylon. Which brings me to my question, I normally sharpen serrated edged blades on a table or bench sharpener using triangle type ceramic rods. Can you recommend a pocket ceramic slip or pocket ceramic triangle for field sharpening? Keep up the great work. BTW, I just stropped my Canteen for the 1st time, I didn't think it was possible to be even more impressed with this knife, but there it is... Now that's a knife edge!

Hi David, I a big fan of your videos! I look forward to watching every week. My favourite knife is the Giantmouse Ace Biblio. I love the blade geometry, materials and ergos. I have been looking for something a little bigger for certain tasks. How would you compare the Para 3 to the Biblio? Would you say it’s a good choice when moving up in size? For the knife thing about dropping it overboard you can carry the knife with basically a bobber on the lanyard loop if you are worried about dropping it overboard. They make those ones for your keys with that cheap metal chain i would replace the chain of course but that's always an option you can just have a net to grab it in that case.

Best tactical slipjoint would be the Sandrin Lanzo. My one and done would be a Cruwear Delica but to be fair I've never owned a Para 3. I'm waiting for a sprint lightweight in a better steel.

Hi DCA. I'm a big fan of the Knifecenter FAQ. I'm a rock climber. I need a knife able to cut through nylon and spectra/ dyneema slings, from 8 to 20 mm in width and also dynamic rope ranging from 9 to 10.5 mm. It doesn't necessary need to be a folder, but have to be small enough to carry in a climbing harness. It also need to have a hole big enough to pass a carabiner through or have a built-in carabiner. More Pilgrims coming soon. As for the Wave companion, I'd go with something less heavy and more agile handling so you don't have to rely on cutting with the Wave as much. Tons and tons of options out there, so I'd have to know more about what your uses are, but maybe something like a tanto point so you could do some scraping with it in a pinch? The Spydreco wireclip makes it easy to carry the smaller knives attached to the space between your shirt buttons (fx where you, David, have your mic clipped on in this video). I carry the Dragonfly 2 Wharncliffe this way, knife on the inside of my shirt, wireclip shows on the outside. Very handy, always available.

My A1x if I'm outdoors. My recon one for work and or work purposes. My recon one mini for casual EDC. But if I had to keep and use only one knife all the time for any and everything? Definitely my AD10

My knife for life would have to be the Tops model Cat. Not a hand hugger but fits great for a man with regular sized hands. As far as a folding knife would have to be the Benchmade Freek

I'd love to see a watch and knife pairing. Take the Hamilton Khaki King or Khaki Field watch for example, which knife do you think pairs well with that watch?

My first knives: I got my grandfathers old slip joints - very old 30s-60s - when he died and my father bought me a Buck 055... I think. No longer have it. I think I need to replace it.

Do you have a Balisong video? Especially with the new Spyderco smallfly 2 🤷🏼‍♂️ something about that being so different to carry. I've had mine now for a week. The past year I have been carrying a Benchmade bailout. This smallfly 2 is epic & i do prefer the wire clip over the other styles. BM clips are rough on the pockets, Leatherman clips are gentle.

I've never seen you review the Alvely knife.have you ever heard of that brand. I own 3. Besides a little uncomfortable handle, it's the sharpest knife out of the box I've ever owned.
