No problems with slipjoints. You just have to be careful with all knives locking or non-locking. My workhorse and edc is Victorinox Spartan.

Are slipjoints safe? A knife isn't yours until it cuts you. For the record, I've cut myself far more with modern/fidget knives than I ever have with a slipjoint. Typically never get cut when actually using a knife, mostly when playing with them lol. Though my Meatcrafter got me good a few weeks ago when I was trimming a brisket for a BBQ.

Svord Peasant was probably worth a mention as a non-locking knife that is effectively a locking knife when being used.
@davidelliott8324

There's advantages to that boker as a work knife. It can be difficult to unlock many lock types with gloves. But a slip joint can be folded with the back of the blade pressed against your leg, with just one hand. I carried a Buck Prince for years for that same reason.

@kylethedalek 2 года назад
@Valiforni Not a good thing in most cases as it can shut on you during use.
@davidelliott8324
@davidelliott8324 2 года назад
@@kylethedalek I could agree with that, they're generally robust and easy to release without significantly changing your grip. But they aren't super common, many are autos, and until recently not many good ones were in the price range you'd want for a work knife. But I'd have to disagree with @Valiforni . Liner and frame locks can be difficult, depending on detent strength and relief in the front side to allow access. I'd have to imagine(not a spiderco fan) that the compression lock can be similar. Many crossbars are much firmer when only sliding with one side, as you might when trying to keep a sure grip on the knife. Crossbars often get dust and debris gumming up their spring mechanism in dirty environs. And lock backs types like my old prince are easily closed one handed, but you have to significantly adjust your grip to a rear pinch or reverse grip and keep your fingers out of the way. There's plenty of others that can be debated, but when dirt and gloves and a sure grip are involved a slip joint works exceptionally well. Like DCA more or less said, if you're using the knife as a knife it's unlikely to close on you.

Thanks, DCA, for this episode. Great answers in that Boker large slip joint as well as the Flytanium scales for that "do all" PM2 required. Great value smed-worker in the Hogue Deka. I'm not sure we could ever see Thomas' reflection in that mirror polish (but it is time to see Thomas 'in action' again in another 'garage/auto/shop project' video). 100%, no offense to DCA or Seth but Thomas absolutely slayed that "shop knives" video. I think he needs to do a "yard knives" or "kitchen knives" vid next, I think sending him home with a camera and a subject really let him show some creativity these bench top vids don't allow. It'd definitely be a good change of pace every now and again.

David and Thomas, could you maybe some time address the issue of serrations ? I've found that, like many people have, not all serrations are the same; some are too long and only snag on materials while others are much more rounded, like Benchmade or Esse, who do excellent serrations. What do you guys think ? PS: Thomas, what did you do to your finger ? Yes, I noticed your 'bruised' fingernail ! Were you working on that damned truck again ?!?!? Mostly for running and biking in warm/hot months and with lightweight shorts. Prefer to clip outside of waistband. General rules I’ve gone by for slip joints is to 1) never back out of a cut (such as through cardboard) so the backwards facing tension does not go the opposite way and snap shut 2) don’t muscle your way through tough items in one cut, several cuts work just as well 3) be mindful of the direction of force if using the tip for piercing tasks 4) grip the tang or kick at the base of the blade as a choil, or use a pinch grip with fingers clear of the blade’s path

I brought it to a 0.1micron polished edge, but had to strop it to tooth up the apex, making in cut much better. While my Knife Center Exclusive CruWear Para3 loves the polished edge. Hey, DCA, Thomas, maybe Seth 👀 and KnifeCenter crew im looking for alternatives for the Benchmade Crooked River for my sister. She's fond of wooden scales with metal bolsters but found the mini and regular crooked river too large and to heavy. And yes I've also tried the Buck 110/112 as well, not her cup of tea. Hi DCA, I'm constantly looking for small bushcrafty knives with a blade length of somewhere between 2.75 and 3.5 inchesand scandi/scandivex or convex grind. I like the Bark River Ultralight Bushcrafter a lot, but it's just not quite 100 % right for me, so I am looking for something a bit different and less expensive. Something along the lines of the Ultralights' elegance, the simplicity of the old Mora 2/0, the versatility of the Benchmade Puukko, the compactness of the Brisa Bobtail and a Casström Woodsman with a slimmer blade thickness. Do you have any recommendations for this very specific niche, or will I have to design my own knife and become totally rich filling this void? I have been looking into the Tops Scandi Trekker, but just cannot justify the price to myself seeing that it's a small scandi with micarta scales and 1095 steel. What's your opinion on the Tops? Thanks so much for all your great content, always looking forward to new KnifeAQ's

Hey DCA and team! I work in a machine shop where the needs for a knife are endless. I carry a 20CV wharncliffe Deka as my everyday and there aren't enough good things I can say about it. The speed, ease, and safety of deployment along with its shape and high end steel make it just *chef's kiss* a real treat to carry. HOWEVER. There are many occasions where I find myself reaching for disposable razors or utility blades for more delicate tasks. I have purchased several handles from various big box stores to hold said blades but my issue with those is that they just don't provide me with the same feel or enjoyment I get from any typical premium folder that might be featured on your channel. SO! Can you recommend a few knives, or knife handles, that would provide the same functionality of a utility blade, or either hold one, while also satisfying a knife enthusiast like myself? We'll say the budget is $100 - $999.99 so go nuts. Thanks for all the great content!

Check out the Baby Banter by Civivi. A friend has one and it is quite nice. Good steel too!

Think about making slipjoints, trying to gauge interest in my design. Multiple different blade styles and Handle materials with coffin shaped handles on the larger side? Still not 100% on blade steel.

I really like this channel called Bushradical he’s built a whole cabin and the knife he uses is a Case slipjoint. And by the looks of it that wasn’t the fist.

DCA, I have convinced my wife to carry a knife regularly (woo hoo!). However, I still haven't found the perfect one for her. She doesn't like complicated locks and isn't looking for fidget factor. She is concerned with safety. Glass breakers are actually a bonus for her. She also values a finger guard or forward finger groove (not choil). Oddly, her favorite knife so far is the Bailout. She also likes the Elementum. I think something like the Kizer Justice would be great if it wasn't so big. Any suggestions?
@arrowheadguys7637
@arrowheadguys7637 2 года назад
Ha as I was reading through this I was thinking the Bailout. Great knife, very thin and easy to carry and the M4 blade holds an edge for a good long time.
@Ryan_the_tinz
@Ryan_the_tinz 2 года назад
@@arrowheadguys7637 it's actually the 3V Grivory one, but she would probably like the M4 aluminum one more. I just got a good deal on the other.

@arrowheadguys7637 2 года назад
@@Ryan_the_tinz Yeah I think she would, the grivory is fine but I've found the aluminum versions of it and the Bugout feel a little more balanced in hand. The aluminum one has the glassbreker tho where the grivory version does not. Thats why I thought you meant the M4 model.

Hey DCA, as someone who has just started getting into buying good knives that are not just "stainless steel" mystery items ive come to realize just how many brands are out there. If possible could you name some brands and/or examples that are respected for quality in the $200 and below range (stainless a plus)? Brands like Civivi, Kizer, Kershaw, and CRKT are all ones that even I know and own some knives from but I was looking for some more variety in my collection.

Right around $200 or below I'd recommend: TRM(Three River Manufacturing) Atom/Neutron Lionsteel (some of the SR's, Thrill) Spyderco has some just under $200 Quiet Carry There's plenty of other good brands, those are some that I've had good experience with.

I'd recommend the Benchmade 940 Osborne, Spyderco Para 2, and the Demko 20.5 in 3V. All are right around the $200 mark and give you a pretty good selection of features between them, and I believe all three are a staple of knife collecting (even though the Demko is new to the game)

I'm looking for a new edc torn between benchmade crooked river, Berg iron wolf, just kinda a big clip point
@arrowheadguys7637
@arrowheadguys7637 2 года назад
Both are pretty good lookers with good materials. Comes down to American made/Axis lock or China made/frame lock. If either of those is more appealing to you go with that. If not, get the one that you like the looks of better, because when it boils down to it, thats what really creates satisfaction in a knife purchase. Personally I like the Crooked River, its on my "to buy" list.

Mister anderson.... I'm agent smith and my question is what is the worst material to cut through that would dull a knife edge the quickest? Blade steel aside. And normal usage I mean, not cutting through pop cans and stuff .

IMO, reverse tanto only if the front edge is actually sharp. If not, it's just a cleaver or sheep's foot.

I’m 64. The only time I’ve had problems with a slip joint is when I made a mistake. Germany. 4 inch max. Can have a lock or two hands opening. But not a lock and one hand opening. I believe gr Britain says no lock

Hey DCA, I have a serious question. Can you use KPL on bronze Washers and get easier flipping action than with grease?
@arrowheadguys7637
@arrowheadguys7637 2 года назад
I typically just adjust the pivot until I get the action I want. Lube will collect gunk and often times people use too much lube and it makes the action worse. Or if you're feeling really adventurous you can polish the washers
