@Aa-dc2xu
@Aa-dc2xu 4 года назад
Most swords are named after the word for sword in their respective languages. A Persian scimitar is known as a shamshir which means sword. A Japanese sword is known as a katana which means sword. A Turkish scimitar is known as a kilij which means sword. And this is the same for Indian swords. In fact, I'm pretty sure the term "scimitar" was rarely used historically. Most cultures would just call it "sword" in their respective languages.

The "scimitar" is a fantasy sword. Its a medieval artistic impression of a middle eastern Shamshir, pulwar etc. The artists did not know what they actually looked like so they basically drew them like the only curved sword they had ever seen a medievel Falchion & thus the "scimatar" was born. I guess i should expect no less from the channel that brought us ancient aliens

I think the problem is sword classification is either utterly vague and useless IE: "longsword" or "Sabre" Or it so hyper specific that minor modifications demand entirely new terms like in the Oakeshott typology. "Scimitar" exists with two given definitions these days. The first is the denotative definition which your citing in which the scimitar is a very specific blade design factoring in everything from guard shape to the presence of a false back-edge. The second is the connotative wherein western predominately Eurocentric blade design classifies all blades of this design tradition as a "scimitar" which I think is what they are using in the video.

If it has ''false edge'' aka YALMAN then it is a Turkic Kilij not scimitar, shamshir, talwar and especially saber simply because Turkic Kilijs date back to Göktürk Khaganate in 6th century!! None of those had yalman until 15th century when they copied Ottoman Kilijs, in fact some of them were simplified versions of Kilij at first place like scimitar, shamshir and several centuries later saber from them...

This is the weapon that some Arabs used professionally and sometimes they used two in the hands and it was famous among the Arabs who were highwaymen in the past. The size of the scimitar was shorter and then its size increased to be able to confront the huge spears and swords, but the scimitar is made of iron and reinforced copper, which has become less rusty than iron and solid steel, and aluminum prevents rust.
