Knipex makes exceptional tools including a line of small or single-hand bolt cutters that uses a leverage multiplying cantilever mechanism.
This is the CoBolt XL, the largest of the line with a 250mm length. CoBolt cutters come with either a recessed or non-recessed cutting surface. The recessed contains a curved cutout near the pivot causing the knives to to grab circular workpieces. Or straight edges that cut flat material quite well.

I have a flush cutting version of these as well as the non notched version, I do wanna get the 160 and 250mm sizes in the future. Koon Trucking recently did a video showing off the flush version in the last couple months or so. Another thing, I put up a video tonight of a pair of tire nail pulling pliers I think you might like them and the other ones I put in the description.

Thank you for that video. Those are cool pliers and that Franks website looks sick, it’ll be nice to avoid the shipping delays and charges. I ordered from nepros directly and it has been the single strangest multi month sagas that I’m sure I will ever have as a consumer. If you happen to have the part no. for the flush cut version I’d appreciate it. I have the cobalt compact bolt cutters 7102200 but until this video I didn’t realize there was a difference in the cutting face.

@@aintnoplum if its sheet metal id look into malco aviation snips or if its really thick id suggest the ones that have the recessed jaw.

I’m a pipewelder and I use the recess version for cutting tig wire. I’ve cut stainless, inconel, chrome, and never had a problem. I love these knipex cutters, well worth the money.

I have a pair of the 250mm with the notch. Fantastic for larger diameter cuts. I am a bricklayer and use them for cutting stainless steel wall ties and stainless steel reinforcements which are 2 or 3mm. The notch will cut halve way through will virtually no effort and then the second cut is on the flat blade. it all depends on what you want to cut but if you already own a good set of wired cutters and want something to cut nail, thick wire, small screws, etc, go for the notch version.

I have the 200 mm version with the notch and it works great. The notch permits you to cut screws and rods with higher leverage because you can position them closer to the pivot point of the tool.

It's one year later. How is your 200mm Cobalt Recess cutters ?

@@adelarsen9776 They still work great and the cutting edges show no signs of wear.

I use those Knipex recess mini bolt cutters to cut old fence when I’m clearing overgrown areas for new fence. I love them and work perfectly for what I’m doing.

I think I’m going to go with the notch version. If I’m pulling these out it’s probably going to be for something thicker that my regular diagonal cutters wouldn’t handle.

Few months ago I was considering to buy 250mm Cobolt pliers... one thing I was not 100% sure if it's better to get flush or notched version (I wanted some tool capable of quick shortening of bolts and wood screws). So I run through every single review video on YT, and was still unsure which one is better. Finally, I watched official promo video from Knipex, where a german guy had both versions and cut various things with them. At one moment he was cutting some 4 or 5mm bolts - and that was the AHA! moment for me. It's strange, it should be exact opposite, but when he cut those bolts with notched version, it was evident (even from video) that he had some little struggle with it. When he cut them with flush Cobolts, it was effortless instant SNAP! Like I said - it's strange because it should be exact opposite, but a real test showed true results. So I bought flush Cobolt 250mm and I'm mega-happy with it.

Knipex offset Cobalts are monsters Doc. I’ve cut Ram sets to remove old electrical panels with those bad boys. Nice and flush, keeps the swearing hush. Congratulations my friend on adding a quality tool to the menagerie!

I just got a pair off the Mac Truck and cut a washer with it. No damage to the teeth, I'm very impressed.

That recess is more designed for like 2 mm if not thicker wire

Nice job illustrating the practical difference in how the two different versions cut. Depending on what you are cutting, you could probably justify one of each (or more!) The recessed version is much better with nails and screws, but semi-useless for flat materials.

Awesome awesome comparison 👍 I have the smaller ones just like yours and yeah the recess gets annoying sometimes. I will definitely be looking into a set of those XL's. Thanks for the info

Recently purchased what appear to be identical cutters by Crescent.. Not sure where manufactured, but I’d guess far less expensive and much closer to home.

I just cut a bunch of old dog pen fence wire with my 200’s. Mine don’t have that cut out in the most important part of jaw lol. I’m thinking I could use those longer handles though on the 250’s. 🤔🤘🏻

When I was doing garden fencing work with gloves, that little notch made everything worse. I either had to go slow or make multiple cut at the same point. Often both.

that strong tool is not for fine wirk :)) so, yeah, one of them it is good for a lot of task, almost all, but only when you have something really strong, you take the cobolt heavy tool..

Can you cut a lock off with these? Are those 10 in I'm looking for something I can cut toilet bolts with but also cut a padlock off with LOL that's not huge like traditional bolt cutters

Hmm. Think ill grab the notched 200 ones for bigger stuff then use the regular diagonal cutters for stuff thats too small for the cobolts. I would like the 160 cobolts just for fun though

Would these be good for cutting 9 wire? W/ or w/o the notch? Is there something better? TIA

I have the smaller set & am still trying to find something it can actually cut. The biggest waste of money for a long time. Have lots of Knipex but they are junk.
