I’m so glad I came across this video! I’m just starting the crown of a hat, and the timing couldn’t be better. I appreciate very much your explaining the percentage method and your clear instructions. Thank you so much.

This was great information presented in a clear way, thank you. I have a lot of thick hair so I think I will have to sacrifice a pucker-free crown to get more width through my hat.

Thank you, Meaghan!!! So helpful. As I've encountered patterns where the crown puckered in a disappointing way, I now have some tips on how to evaluate the written pattern to minimize puckering: checking the decrease ratio, looking for plain rows between the decreases. I would guess that if there are no plain rows written in (and/or you change the decrease ratio) and you want to incorporate the changes, perhaps the decreasing rounds need to start earlier. Do you have any advice about how to determine when to begin the decrease rounds? I suppose it might also be subjective as to how you prefer hat fit (slouchy versus "just right"). My preference is a more fitted crown.

You're welcome! And yes, definitely. You'll want to compare the number of crown-shaping rows you need using the method I talked about here vs. the number of rows the pattern you are working from calls for. If, for example, you'll need 14 rows using today's method but your pattern only calls for 8 rows, to maintain the height of the hat, you'll want to start it 6 rounds early. Let me know if you have any more questions!
