In today's video, we take a look at a couple of very simple adjustments you can make to the neckline of your knit sweater so the collar doesn't pull too wide - and there's almost no math involved (unless you want there to be!).

Thank you so much! I learn sooo much from your videos! Even little tips like this one: the stability of the collar by picking up later! ❤

Oh yay! I am so excited for my question to be explored next video! I love that you say an educated guess as that is what I normally tell people. My terminology is “an educated guesstimate!”

Perfect timing. I am just about to start a raglan sleeve sweater for the first time.

Would love an episode on crew neck and making it closer to the neck. Thanks, Sue

Very nicely explained. I like raglan sweaters so I usually knit top down; have not tried yet knitting without the neck ribbing and then adding it at the end as bottom up. I am currently knitting a raglan from a self-striping Noro and because I like to live dangerously, I am not really following any pattern though I did consult one, just for the amount of stitches to cast on. I think I have already frogged the whole thing close to 10 times because there was always something I was not happy with (the neck circumference, the short rows, always something). At my last iteration I cast on 72 stitches and it was so tight that even to knit the neck ribbing using a 16" needle was difficult (had to resort to magic loop). When I was an inch or two past the short rows, a friend stopped by and she asked me if I am knitting a sweater for my dog LOL - that's how small the neckline was. Now, when I have about 9" of fabric at the front, the neckline has stretched a bit (but not too much - it's fits me well). I look forward to the yard substitution episode - I am really interested in that (you better include the doggos in that one!).

Thank you for doing these videos - your instructions are very clear! I would love to see how to alter a pattern for petite sizes. I am doing a circular yoke top down and the armholes are too low or the yoke is too long - I can’t move my arms! I think I am too short for the pattern from shoulder to sleeve separation but that measurement isn’t given. Knit patterns almost never mention petite sizing. Thanks so much!

I'd really have to do some research into this one to compare petite "average" body lengths to the Misses body sizes most patterns are based off of, but I love this idea. Thanks for such a thoughtful comment!

Great lesson as always❤ My question re necklines applies to v neck ribbing on striped sweaters. How do you avoid pulling the stripes up across the sweater when picking up stitches for a rib?

I'm not quite sure I understand the question. If you'd like to send me an email with a picture of what you're asking I'm happy to look into it for you!

Hi Meaghan, your videos are incredibly helpful. Quick question: I am starting the Diggory Venn by Isabelle Kramer but it looks like the collar is wider than I prefer and even a bit narrower too. Top down, round yoke, the increases don’t start until after 2 plain knit rows after the collar ribbing. Would it be better to cast on straight for the yoke in the smaller size and come back and pick up for the collar and maybe add more depth? Or cast on the collar for the smaller size down and increase to stitch count of bigger size during increases? Or are they both kind of the same? Thank you so much for your advice!

You can do either; the effect would largely be the same. I prefer the first option since it will give me a secure edge and won't stretch out over time. Then, you can work the collar to your preferred length.

@@TheUnapologeticKnitter So would you cast on (that’s what would make it more stable?) and pick up stitches? Or cast on with provisional? Thank you!
@TheUnapologeticKnitter
@TheUnapologeticKnitter Месяц назад
@@mendezcher I would cast on with a normal cast on (German Twisted or Long Tail is my preference), then pick up and knit into it when it’s time to make the collar. A provisional cast on wouldn’t have as much stability.
