You can find the first video in this selbu/Nordic mitten knitting tutorial here - • Knitted Selbu Mitten T...
In that first video, we will...
Review the materials and pattern (minutes 0.00 - 6.47)
Learn to cast on and work on double-pointed needles (minutes 6.47 - 14.14)
Get the first two rows of the mitten cuff started (minutes 14:14 - end)
In this video, we will increase from 56 stitches to 60 stitches in order to start knitting the pattern. We'll work on the colorwork pattern and increasing stitches to fit the thumb.
If you're new to knitting Selbu (Norweigian/Scandinavian) Mittens, I would suggest checking out this post as a resource before you get started...
Making Selbu Mittens |Tips for Beginners - missmustardseed.com/making-kn...
And part one of this series in this blog post & video -
missmustardseed.com/selbu-mit...
The pattern I'm using for the hand of the mitten is from pg 138 of the book Mitten from Around Norway - bit.ly/3rP8Gfw
You can use any pattern that is 60 stitches across, though.
Supplies Needed
Rauma Strikkegard Yarn in two colors (two skeins of white or cream and two in a preferred contrasting color.) This is where I buy my yarn online - www.ingebretsens.com/shop/cra...
The colors used in this tutorial are 101 (off-white) and 146 (gold.)
Size 2 (2.75mm) knitting needles - bit.ly/3AwFPjX
Scissors
Low-tack artist tape - bit.ly/3qWxjHX
1 large safety pin - bit.ly/3bx7TMk
1 large blunt needle - bit.ly/3BHc4Qo
Pattern for the cuff -
With cream or white yarn, cast on 56 stitches and distribute across four double-pointed needles (size 2/2.75mm) so there are 14 stitches per needle
Knit, knit, purl, purl (kkpp) pattern in cream/white to make 6 rows
Pick up second yarn color and kkpp pattern two rows
pick up white/cream yarn and kkpp pattern for two more rows
Repeat until there are five colored stripes
Add with six more rows in white/cream of kkpp pattern before starting knitting pattern.
Finish the cuff with one more row of white/cream yarn in a knit stitch. 7 stitches into each needle, increase 1 stitch. With four stitches added in that row (one on each needle), there will be a total of 60 stitches and you're ready to start the mitten pattern or your choosing.
Part three will be coming soon! I'll show how to leave a hole for the thumb to continue stitching the hand of the mitten and how to decrease at the top for the fingers.
And here are two great pattern books, which are optional -
Winter Knits from Scandinavia - bit.ly/3rP8Gfw
Mittens from around Norway - bit.ly/3rP8Gfw

Thank you for your video! It’s been a while since I made mitts and couldn’t remember how to read the chart of the second mitt. From right to left or left to right! And you answered that! I searched a lot of videos and no one said! Again, thank you! You speak slow and clear also!

Selbu mittens are my favorite thing to knit. Just cast on a pair while watching your video. Great tutorial!

Thank you so much for the detailed tutorial! I never would have tried knitting mittens before (let alone doing mittens with colour work!) but you make it seem so easy that I’m giving it a try and loving it so far! I’m nervous about the thumb though 😅

You can do it! I just posted the video on how to make the thumb. It's really easier than you might guess.

Thanks a lot for the tutorial. Decided to try and knit these and see how they turned out. I'm trying to knit them flat though, for now they are turning out alright. The tutorial has helped a lot and answered all the questions I had until now, so thanks a lot :) Kudos from Portugal

Oh, let me know how that turns out! You'll knit them flat and then stitch the side together?

@@missmustardseed Yes, that's exactly what I intend on doing

@@missmustardseed Just finished the mittens! They turned out perfect. A bit long for my hands, but maybe that's just the pattern I chose. Comes to show everything is «knittable» in the flat. Thanks again greatly for the videos, Miss!

What's the name of the increase used in this pattern? Also, I was so confused by the thumb part of the pattern I was using and this was very helpful! Thanks :)

Could you do the thumb increases in more detail .

How many stitches are at the bottom of the main pattern? I’m confused about the part when you start increasing at the thumb. I have 60 stitches on the needles, so when I make the first 45, my pattern has the square pattern for the thumb. What happened to the rest of the stitches before the increasing for the thumb? I hope this makes sense ☺️
@cristinavidal9966
@cristinavidal9966 Год назад
Also, as I’m looking at your pattern, there are 60 stitches on the main pattern BEFORE the increase of the thumb. That means the main glove has maybe around 75 stitches?
@missmustardseed

Yes, the pattern starts with 60 stitched before the thumb increase.

You are reading your pattern left to right. Normally, you read right to left. Is this because of where the thumb is? In other words, for the 2nd mitten, will you work right to left? I’m so confused, did 8 word that correctly? Reading left to right is really throwing me off.

You have some good tips for newer knitters, but my ocd is annoyed with some of your terminology I.e. rows - these are rounds and in some places you encourage bad habits.
