►A step-by-step tutorial on how to knit gloves with fingers and on double-pointed knitting needles. A simple knitting pattern that you can easily adjust to your size. Get the pattern on my blog: nimble-needles.com/patterns/h...
Materials:
DK weight yarn (80-100g; for laceweight you'd only need around 50g). I am using a pure merino DK weight yarn by Samelin Dyeworks: bit.ly/2OiwBEE
My dpns: amzn.to/3fPNi4c
4in dpns: bit.ly/3rGFTtx
Scissors: bit.ly/3t89Qmk
Tapestry needle (blunt & sharp), stitch markers, a measuring tape, and a crochet hook
*Note: As an Etsy & Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Knitted gloves are one of the most popular winter garments to knit but they are also not exactly the easiest project. Especially the gap between around the thumb is prone to creating holes, and many knitters have problems with picking up stitches for the fingers as well. This tutorial on how to knit gloves is meant to solve all these problems. Appart from showing you how to adjust your size, I also put an emphasis on getting neater results with many little tips and tricks for intermediate to advanced knitters.
This glove knitting pattern is based on double-pointed knitting needles. The cuff and the palm could be finished with circular needles or the magic loop technique, though.

I consider myself an intermediate/advanced knitter and have made several pairs of gloves in the past. This tutorial is the most helpful information I have ever seen anywhere. It includes marvelous techniques to address all the classic problems of glove design, which nearly all other patterns just skip over. Thank you, Norman! One additional tip I tried while making gloves according to this tutorial is to knit the purls and slip the knit stitches in the transition row between ribbing and stockinette fabric where the cuff meets the hand. Just a little touch to complement all of Norman's beautiful design features!!
@NimbleNeedles

I must admit, gloves have never been high on my list of things I want to try knitting. One main reason is my own time constraints, but aside from that, it just seemed complicated and I have been content with knitting scarves, blankets, hats, and such more basic items. However, you teach in such a thorough, yet easily comprehensible way, that I think I can do it… as soon as I finish this blanket! ;). Thank you for such great videos and for doing what you do!

Dear Norman Thank you for your great service. I like to tell you that I learned from you a few very beautiful things and see what I came up with. I got those little stich markers I love, and separated the stitches for the fingers holding the stitches for each finger in a different color. This way found makes the finger knitting so comfortable. Instead of adding stitches by knitting 3 stiches, I used the adding stiches method you chose, to add for the thumb " bridge* which helps me avoid the holes in a way easier for me. Thanks your precious teachings ❤️

Hi Norman. Thank you so much for making these tutorials. I so appreciate your linear approach to fixing common knitting problems and watching your videos has improved the quality of my knitting tenfold. As it applies to this video, I’ve been unable to master using DPs and my attempt to use them here, to knit the pinky finger, quickly became disastrous. Instead of using DPs, I used three (3) circulars, shorter in length, which for me, I found significantly easier to manage. For example, ChiaoGoo makes a 9" circular that allowed the stitches to easily sit on the wire, as well as, both sides to sit close together, which eliminated creating “ladders” that frequently occur when using the magic loop method.

Good morning from California! Just found you a few days ago and now a new subscriber. I’m excited about all your knowledge. I really want to learn how to make gloves, (maybe mittens first ☺️). Can’t wait to watch a few times to learn. Thank you 💕💃🏻

Hey there. Welcome to my channel! Yes, mittens might be a bit easier to start out. Or you try gloves and if you don't like the look, you just unravel the fingers and continue according to any mitten pattern :) Up until the palm, things are pretty much the same, after all.

Absolutely love your video tutorials! Hard to find a comprehensive techniques which are also easy and in a way common sensed. I am myself also a continental knitter, the only difference are my purl stitches, I do them in 'combination" style, it works easier for me and I am pretty fast at purling. This style makes knit stitches reversed mount on the needle, I always have to keep that in mind when pattern calls for SSK, since those stitches already in SSK position. I would love you to make a tutorial for a pattern calculation for a basic crew/V neck sweater. It is almost impossible to find a custom fit pattern which has no "droopy" shoulders. That is why I would resort to raglan sleeve only, besides raglan makes it easy to knit with no seems when it is done in a round.

This is one of the most detailed instruction videos for knitting I've found - for free - and I absolutely appreciate all the effort that went into it. Everything is explained very nicely and clearly. It's easy to follow. And I love that the video lends itself to basically any hand sizing, weird or not. So again, thank you. You've definitely acquired a new subscriber
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 2 года назад
aww...thank you nicole for appreciating my efforts. And I do have to say, I pondered quite a lot beforehand how I can accomodate different hand configurations. Because if look around even in just my small family, we got missing digits, crooked digits, digits that cannot be bent, fat fingers because of certain medical conditions, and so on. Now certainly a video can only be so long and not everything can be accounted for..but I at least tried to present a start :)

Wow! Thank you so much for this supergreat video! Great all those calculations for different gauge. I wish I had seen this before I made gloves for my daughter (a lot of frustration, try on, frog, start over again,....) After I finished her gloves I said: NEVER will I knit gloves again. But after this video I'm eager to cast on for another nice pair of gloves! Can't thank you enough! Happy knitting!

i have a great patters for fingerless gloves that uses all these same methods and they fit great. I am very impressed with your methods! That pattern is worked starting with making the finger tubes tho, and then once you have them all made, you join them together, work the hand, and decrease to the cuff, adding the thumb when you come to that point. I am excited to try your method for cuff-up working and then see if I can also flip your pattern over and work down to the cuff. I love finding new patterns and playing around with them, so thanks for such a great walkthrough!
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 2 года назад
interesting. do you knit the fingers separately and keep live stitches or bind off when you knit top down?
@syddlinden8966
@syddlinden8966 2 года назад
@@NimbleNeedles they are kept live and held on stitch holders. you use the tails from the fingers to sew up between the fingers at the end to close up any holes left after joining them.

Anyone else knitted the pinky finger next to the thumb? Keep up the good work!

yes, that was basically my intention. I wanted people to give the resource to knit gloves for hands that may be a bit shorter...or maybe there's one digit missing etc. All these sort of things. It's a bit difficult to put it all in one video but I sure wanted to make an attempt!

Thank you for the tutorial, I'm halfway through watching and I really appreciate the detailed explanation, the options to modify stitches and how to customise the gloves according to size. Using DPNs with DK yarn seems less intimidating for me (compared to fingering, let's not talk about lace).
@NimbleNeedles

ha...well knit it with whatever yarn weight you feel most comfortable with! I personally feel dk weight is a bit too tough on my fingers and hands. But that is an entire personal preference.
