I re-knit one of my earlier victorian interpretations in order to better match my 1890s walking ensemble. The yarn is hand-dyed with woad!

That was really interesting! At first I thought it was called a miser's purse because it would stop you from spending money as you would have to do a whole procedure. ha! Thank you for sharing your process :)

Wow, and I thought knitting with US 1 (2.25 mm) was rough on the hands. I can't imagine what it would be like to use such small needles!

Wow my imagination is going crazy with how purses have evolved. I can't imagine not having my lipstick, mirror or phone with me. Indeed, a woman's purse has evolved along with her everyday accessory necessities!!!💃

What amazing work! Your purse is BEAUTIFUL! It looks like the same style of purse that Harriet carries at the end of the 2020 film adaptation of “Emma”!

I am so glad that I can finally understand how those purses work! I love the idea of a coin purse, but it is hard to parse through and find the coins you need. This method of separation solves all my problems! Thank you!!

After watching you make a miser's purse, now I need to go make me one. It looks so pretty. I'm often seen pictures of ladies carrying them, but I also mistakenly thought it was a handkerchief, so today I learned those are miser's purses not handkerchiefs. Ty for all the wonderful & educational videos you make!

This is incredible!! That lattice style beading can be done on a single thread working side to side and attaching to the knitted work as you go! I can’t explain on a comment but I believe it can be done much easier that way.

I've seen big canvas bags called market wallets. Made in the same way as your purse, but much bigger of course.

Hi - just saw this on Cocovid and subscribed to your channel - lol I have a few Victorian Knitting books but I'm always too busy with sweaters ( nearly wrote jumper ) and blankets..... I had another look through the "Art of Knitting" after I watched your video and am going to knit the knee over thing - my knee is always colder than the rest of me

Loved this, thank you! I like the way you hold the yarn. Different from how I was taught though yours is better because it is more ergonomic by only moving fingers to wrap the yarn rather than the way I knit, which takes a whole hand movement to wrap the yarn. 🇦🇺😎

It's called Continental. There are quite a few different ways to knit, and often it depends on what country/area people are from. For example, throwing (where you use one hand to wrap the yarn) is referred to as English knitting, there's also a Norwegian method, as well as Portugeuse knitting. Some people prefer Continental as they say it's faster - but whatever works really :)

@@SherbetLollipop it's only faster if you're good at it! XD The interesting bit is that, the different methods really evolved from different techniques that were popular. For example, 'throwing' works better for bobbles and cables like you'd see in an aran fisherman's sweater, for example, but continental really makes stranding and fair isle patterns a bit easier to do from our Norwegian cousins!

wow, that's such a clever design! And work with such tiny needles, amazing! The result is so pretty :) I suppose you know about it, but maybe as a resource for others, there's a method of netting with beads that uses just one thread (and beading needle, yes, that helps a lot). I've used that with some of my beaded projects and I can see how it could work with this kind of combined media purse as well. (There's lot of tutorials for it, simple googling "bead netting" leads to them usually.)

How delicate and lovely! I love the outcome of working with lace needles....but I hate what it does to my eyes and wrists! 😩

It is so pretty!!! How do you even maneuver needles that small?!? I feel like I would go cross-eyed and arthritic before getting halfway through! Sometimes you can get away with using a very small sewing needle; not all of the beads might fit, but keep an extra receptacle to drop them in so that you don't rethread the same bead. Takes longer, but quicker than no needle. Also, I feel like you were overthinking your beading far too much...

May I ask what brand of needles you're using here? They look MUCH more tapered than mine in 0000, and trying to knit lace at that gauge with blunt needles is just soul-sucking. Oh, the woes of being a lace knitter.

So did t they just hold the purse in their hands? Or did they attach the purse to their person?

That is a great question. Of the paintings I've seen of women with miser's purses they're holding it in their hands. If you have a belt, you could also loop it over as well!
