Some tips and tricks for swatching, including how to knit an in-the-round swatch on a small, flat piece.
The yarns I used for the swatches is Australian Superfine Merino by Cleckheaton. For more information (including info on free shipping), visit their website here:
www.cleckheaton...
The colors of Cleckheaton yarn I used are Soft Blue, Mid Navy, Coral, and Smoke.
Instructions for knitting the stockinette swatch:
(The number that your pattern lists as stitches over 4 inches = X)
Cast-on X, plus 10
Bottom Border: Knit every row for 9 rows (you will have 5 garter stitch ridges)
Row 1 (RS): Knit across all stitches
Row 2: K 5, P "X", K 5
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until you've worked the number of rows in your pattern states as 4 inches.
Top Border: Knit every row for 10 rows (5 garter stitch ridges)
Bind off.
Information on things you'll see in the video:
The cowl I'm wearing is a new free pattern and video tutorial:
verypink.com/20...
The stitch pattern for the cabled coral swatch is called "Windswept"; from Vogue Knitting Stitchionary, Volume 2, Cables.
The stitch pattern for the diagonal lacy pattern is called "Slanting Open-Work Stitch"; from Interweave Press Harmony Guides, Lace & Eyelets.
The little bamboo marking pins I use can be found here:

The circular needles I use in the video are by Knitter's Pride/Knit Pro.
The watch ring I'm wearing is by Davis, and can be found here:

Not a question just an anecdote. I was reading an Elizabeth Zimmerman book. She had a whole chapter on knitting a gauge swatch. Very similar to your video. But at the end she said she doesn’t bother knitting a gauge swatch because when she’s finished it will fit someone. She’s so funny.

She must have endless time for knitting. I have to make my knitting/crocheting time count. I only do projects that I want to have come out perfect unless I'm knitting house socks with worsted weight yarn. I have some really funky house socks. I do experiment on those. :D

Lindsay Green - you swatch and measure gauge on a pattern you're designing yourself the exact same way, but designing something yourself usually takes more trial and error (several swatches) to create the exact fabric you want in your design. Designing patterns takes more explanation than I can give here in the comments, but I will have a "design your own sweater" video series coming up in the new year.

Hi Staci. Thank you for the explanation. I didn’t know about that and thought that gauge meant that I choose yarn according to the gauge they mention in the pattern. What to do if I already knitted more than half of the sweater and realized it is 2 sizes bigger than the one I wanted to knit. (Which is not a train smash because it’s for a big boy and he can grow into into the sweater 😃) i really don’t want to unravel, do I just take the finished measurement for the bigger size to finish? Thank you in advance

Thank you Staci, that was very helpful! I've always considered making swatches like a waste of time until I made a dress for my baby girl and... guess what? I ended up with a huge yoke, just like you said in your video. From that moment on I always make swatches, even if it's boring and consumes a lot of time. But better that than to make a whole project and find out it won't fit and you've just waisted days of work!

This past Dec. 2014 I do believe marked the first full year of knitting for me. I learned this past year the knitting technique in most situations and I do look forward to making knitting a skill of mine eventually. I became appreciative of swatching and different stitches about 9 months in after doing baby sweaters, and learning the excellent techniques or should I say "Critiquing" of the ever so cozy like a dreamy sock. I found that swatching is a part of knitting and I now have a special place like that basket to your left ( it has me trying to peek in) for my swatches. I love seeing tutorials like these. Short, sweet and very much to the point that I understand. Research is important and You are in my Library like the other 10 Einsteins of Knitting . Soon I hope to retain the skill of timing. PS, I like the way you are looing stylish and earthy warm with the cowl and the light sweater. You certainly reflect Texas! Thank You Lady.

I have been resistant to swatching, which is a shame, because so many things turn out Not. Quite. Right. One problem I had in the past was that my swatch tension was often different from the project, but I think that was because I didn’t bother to make a large enough swatch. (“I can cheat and just do an inch or two.”) I now realize that if I take the time to do a proper swatch, chances are my tension will reflect that of my project.

Thanks for the great video Staci! There seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding swatching. Also, I'm glad you addressed swatching in the stitch pattern of the pattern itself. A lot of people I know will have a cable pattern (for instance) and swatch in stocking stitch, so I'm glad you've cleared that up. I was rather amused when you referred to Cleckheaton as a new yarn. It's been sold here in Australia since the 50s :p

The video was quite informative, thank you. Personally I don't make swatches very often. If I use the correct needle size and yarn with the same tension as the yarn used in a pattern, I almost always get perfect tension. I do make swatches however if I am making a garment that has to be the right size.

The swatch with the diamond/orange yarn in just shy of 4”. You say to go up a needle size or two. Would you please explain why you would not be going down a needle size? I believe you explained if swatch is not large enough go down needle size. When swatch is too large go up a size needle. How badly confused am I? BTW love you and your videos.
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 2 года назад
It gets confusing! If your swatch is too small, you need bigger stitches. You need a larger needle size to make bigger stitches. If your swatch is too big, you need smaller stitches, so you need a smaller needle size.

Something bothers me about swatches. For example if you want to knit socks and you divide your yarn into two equal balls you would be knitting your swatch from one ball which would make your yarn uneven for your socks. So do you buy an extra skein to use for your swatch?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 8 лет назад
You can knit your swatch before you divide the yarn. but if you're knitting something small like socks, you can usually just start knitting, and check the gauge on the actual piece.
@BlueMoiraine
@BlueMoiraine 4 года назад
Hello! It's been a while since anyone commented on this video, but I'll ask my question just in case you're still monitoring it! When reading the amount of skeins required for the size of the pattern that you want to make, does the designer account for the amount of yarn used for a swatch, or should I assume that I need to buy an extra skein to ensure that I won't be missing yarn to complete the project? Or do you frog the swatch and use its yarn for the project? I love how concise your explications are, the contrasting yarns and the "bird" point of vue when making your videos. It's easy to follow! Thank you :)
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 4 года назад
I'm always monitoring all 600+ of my videos...very active channel, new video every week! Your questions are good. Most designers will account for the swatch in the yarn amounts, but if you're unsure (or the yarn is really expensive), just contact the designer and ask. Ravelry message is always a good way to reach designers. That said, if I'm knitting something with just one yarn (not multiple colors), I usually buy an extra hank. Any extra yarn is easy to use up in a hat, which is an excellent Christmas present. :)

I like your suggestion for pattern stitches to cast on the number of stitches needed for 4"/10cm. However, how do you compensate for wonky edge stitches in the measurements? I complained about swatching being boring in a Ravelry forum, saying I'd rather be knitting. Some kind person pointed out that swatching _is_ knitting(!), and my attitude has changed since then.
@verypinkknits

Just Having Fun - you can always cast-on a few extra stitches, and just work those extra stitches as edge stitches, in stockinette or garter stitch, regardless of the stitch pattern you have going on in the swatch.

I made a honeycomb brioche swatch. I made it in more than the gauge requirement of stitches. Couldn't I measure the stitches on the back where the garter stitch wrong side is? It's a lot easier to measure garter stitch than the nice side of honeycomb brioche. Stitches are stitches, whether front or back, right?

Hi Staci! If you are using a small piece of a garment (like a sleeve) as your swatch, do you still block it before measuring gauge or would you skip the blocking? Thanks!
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 9 лет назад
raiuchka - that's a good question! It's always best to knit a swatch and fully wash it and block it. But in this case, I would just apply some steam for a quick steam blocking to even out the stitches, then check gauge. There is always a slight chance that the yarn will go nuts and stretch out (for example) when it gets wet, but steam blocking will give you an accurate measurement, in most cases.

@verypinkknits 9 лет назад
Maria Le - the pattern should tell you to either stretch or not stretch ribbing when measuring gauge. If it doesn't say, I just square out the corners of my swatch and measure it as is (after washing). The good thing about rib is that it is so stretchy, you have a little wiggle room with gauge.

Hey, do you ever find that you'll need to undo your swatch because there isn't enough yarn for both that and the project? Or do you undo it if you're having to do multiple swatches? The reason I'm asking is because I'm attempting my first knitted socks soon (your bulky sleep socks and the German short row ones). Do you give details for enough yarn for both the pattern and a gauge swatch? Oh and I'm Aussie so woohoo! Someone famous is using Australian yarn! Thanks!!
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 7 лет назад
To answer your question in general - patterns should give you enough yarn for both a swatch and the knitted item. After all, the designer had to swatch (at least once!) when she designed and wrote the pattern. That said, socks are small enough that you don't really need to swatch for them. Just start knitting, get an inch or two finished, and measure. (Normally you want to wash and block swatches, but socks are stretchy, and measuring like this is usually fine.) And most specifically,, you asked about two of my sock patterns, both of them toe-up patterns. You can't run out of yarn in toe-up socks - the cuff will just be longer or shorter. Good luck!

Staci, I read all the comments and all your replies, and didn't see my question addressed, so I'll ask it! When knitting your stockinette swatches (with garter stitch borders), which cast-on and bind-off do you use to prevent flaring or cinching of the fabric along those edges? Just a regular long-tail CO, and a regular BO. If you're worried about the BO being too tight, you can hold a larger needle in your right hand while you BO.

Hi Staci, Thanks for a wonderful video. May I please know what is the name of the edging you have on the diagonal stitch swatch and how to knit it?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 9 лет назад
Surya Kiran - all of the stitches are listed out in the video description field, just below the video. The diagonal lace stitch has no edging, it is just the natural edge of the stitch. That stitch is only available in a book, and is called "Slanting Open-Work Stitch"; from Interweave Press Harmony Guides, Lace & Eyelets.

Thanks for the info. How would you count stitches in 1x1 rib? I have a pattern that says 5 stitches per inch in 1x1 rib. Is each spine or valley 1 or 2 stitches? Sorry for the silly question but I'm a fairly new knitter and I'm finally branching off into wearables like hats and fingerless gloves. I haven't really needed to swatch at this point because I've mainly made towels, dish clothes and blankets.
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 7 лет назад
If you're having trouble counting the stitches themselves, just measure the whole piece. Cast-on 20, which is the number you want to get 4". Knit your swatch, then measure. If your swatch is smaller than 4", you need to use a bigger needle size. If your swatch is larger than 4", you need to use a smaller needle size. This video will help you with recognizing knit and purl stitches, and counting: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E468GpyOVvU.html

VeryPink Knits Thank you for the info. I would also guess I measure the 4" of ribbing when it is relaxed and not stretched?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 7 лет назад
You'll need to look at the pattern photo for guidance, and/or ask the pattern designer for her advice on how much to stretch out the ribbing to measure. (There is no way I can answer your question.) Ravelry message is usually a good way to reach designers.

I like the idea of knotting the tail! Once you have knitted a project what are the benefits of keeping your swatch? Sometimes I unravel my swatch and use it for knitting. TIA!

I'm new to swatching, so it was great to watch this video for some tips. One thing I can't seem to find the answer to, is, as I knit my swatch and after a few rows, maybe 10 rows, I pull out my measuring tape and I seem to be far off the stitch gauge. It seems pointless to continue for 4 or more inches before measuring. Do knitters abandon their swatch earlier on, or always complete the swatch size? Thanks!
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 7 лет назад
I do the same thing - I measure after a couple of inches, just to get an idea. If I'm WAY off, I'll probably go up or down a needle size to get me closer. (Keeping in mind that I will wash and block the swatch when I'm finished, so measuring before then is only guesswork.)

How would one do a lace swatch in the round? Would you just cast on and start like any other round swatch or is there something extra you would have to do? I've been eyeballing Tincanknits Penny hat.

I would contact Tincanknits and ask her how she recommends the swatch for that pattern is worked, if she doesn't give details in the pattern.

Thank you very much for this information I am wanting to knit your Simple Raglan Cardi from the top down. I am in uk and have got Aaron wool. I need a gauge of 17 st to 4". With a 5.50mm needle I get 16st. With a 5mm needle I get 18st. I am using knit pro circulars and there isn't a needle size I between . Can you advise me please.

+Josie Thornton - the goal for that sweater is 18 stitches over 4 inches, so you're getting correct gauge with the 5mm needles.

Hello, I have a question about troubleshooting a swatch. I've just finished a DK weight cotton swatch for a sweater I want to make. When I finished, the swatch kind of "tilted" to the side, if that makes sense. (Looks like a parallelogram instead of a nice square.) The bottom and top were straight but the stocking stitch in the middle went up diagonally. I thought it was weird, but maybe it would fix up after a wash, but it hasn't. I don't know if this is a tension issue or if the twist of the yarn itself is making the fabric pull one way, but I would hate to make a whole sweater and then have it twist around especially because I'm also knitting it argyle. Any ideas? I'm not sure how to search for help because "twisted knit" just come up with twisted stitches, etc.
@allisonbyrd
@allisonbyrd 3 года назад
I had that issue the one time I used a "Z" twisted yarn as opposed to the more common (here in the U.S., anyway) "S" twisted yarn. You may want to check your yarn's twist. Ultimately, I had to change yarns for my project, since I wasn't going to learn how to mirror knit at that moment and wanted to get on with the project!

Thank so much for your quick response!One more question please..I'm trying to knit a sweater with to different cable patterns I did all you are showing which is great and I get two different gauges of course.Which is the right way to calculate my stitch gauge? Thank you Stacy!
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 8 лет назад
+ΕΙΡΗΝΗ ΧΑΝΙΑΔΑΚΗ - the pattern you're using should give you instructions for how to check gauge for that design. Usually, in a pattern like you're describing, the gauge swatch is stockinette (no cables). You should have to knit one gauge swatch, then know that the pattern will be on-track, regardless of the cables used. If this is unclear in your pattern, I suggest contacting the pattern designer directly, Ravelry message is usually a good way to do that.

I don't personally see a difference in my own knitting, but lots of knitters do. It's a good thing to know about your own knitting, whether your gauge changes.

If you're following the instructions in the pattern to "swatch a pocket", your pocket swatch should measure 6.75" when your gauge is correct.

I would try going down one needle size and knitting for a couple of inches to see how much closer that gets you, then going down another if you still seem to be quite off.

Hi Staci, do I need to wash & block my swatch if it's super wash Marino wool or any other other wools like cashmere, alpaca, silks etc.?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 5 лет назад
You always need to wash your swatch according to the washing directions on the yarn label, before you measure gauge. Animal fibers can be blocked when wet, cottons and linens usually need to be machine dried. Just follow the directions on the label for your yarn.

How many rows do you do if the pattern *doesn't* give row gauge?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 6 лет назад
You can message the pattern designer and ask, but chances are that row gauge doesn't matter in that pattern, so knitting enough (3 inches or so) to get stitch gauge is all you need.
@tilly.

I have a question about your stockinette stitch because it looks slightly different than mine. Yours sort of looks like long vertical lines with tiny diagonal lines in between, whereas mine just looks like rows and rows of V's... (someone please say they know what I'm talking about here!) I've noticed this is other knitting videos too and it's starting to make me wonder if I'm doing something wrong.
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 9 лет назад
MrsTaoLin - without seeing your work, I can't be totally sure, but I'm pretty confident that you aren't doing anything incorrectly. The way we use the index finger on our left hand to keep the stitches moving will ultimately determine the shape of the stitch. (Usually longer on one side than the other.) Different yarns can create different results, depending on the knitter, as well.

are the huge floats an attempt to eliminate purling?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 9 лет назад
iHooDoo - yes, so you never have to purl on the wrong-side of the work, therefore mimicking knitting in-the-round.
@quarkomatic
@quarkomatic 9 лет назад
Neat idea for mimicking in-the-round with essentially a giant I-cord! It's definitely my purling that tends to loosen up my tension in flat knitting. Would you wash this kind of swatch? I'd be worried about the long floats allowing it to loosen up in the wash.
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 9 лет назад
Kevin Cormier - yes, you would need to gently wash and block the flat/in-the-round swatch, just like any other. You can cut the floats and knot them together if you're worried about it falling apart.
