Pretty much all murder mysteries are homages to Agatha Christie. She pretty much defined the genre. The fact that they literally showed you how he died 1/3 of the way through and STILL had a compelling mystery to unravel was just amazing. Especially to people used to mysteries.

Interesting, did we have any murder mysteries like that before her? Like when in school we read that story of Siegfried the dragonslayer and each chapter started with spoilers to avoid any tension, the opposite we would expect today.

Knives Out was the last movie I saw in theater before Covid. Watching Daniel Craig in this role shows how he’s more than just a hunky James Bond. I also like how Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette and Don Johnson allow themselves to be old in this movie. They were drop dead beautiful in their youth and are aging gracefully.

Knives Out and Glass Onion are Rian Johnson's homages to the mysteries of Agatha Christie. Benoit Blanc himself is a variation of the traditional gentleman sleuth, not unlike Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot (see Murder On The Orient Express and Death On The Nile). Johnson's Benoit Blanc films are also an indictment of the wealthy, which is a common theme in Agatha Christie's mysteries as well. The house is an homage to the Sidney Lumet classic Sleuth, which starred a young Michael Caine opposite Sir Laurence Olivier. The board game Clue (from which the film is inspired) was itself inspired the works of Agatha Christie, not only the Poirot mysteries, but other titles as well, such as "And Then There Were None".

If you’d ever be willing to go back to the 30s, in spite of fewer viewers, here are two good ones. They’re not whodunits, but they are suspenseful: *Heat Lightning* (1934) features two sisters who run a service station & café in the California Desert. Throughout one day, various characters stop by, some to stay the night, and eventually someone gets killed. *Checkmate* (1935) is a British drama of cops and thieves, in which the idea of the game is paramount, and chess is a central metaphor.

I remembered what Harlan said about Ransom, “He plays life like it’s a game without consequences until you can no longer tell the difference between a stage prop and a real knife.” Brilliant foreshadowing! when Marta threw up on Ransom that was actually baby food mixed with water. Knowing that makes it easier to watch. The movie was an homage to Agatha Christie novels. Have you read Agatha Christie? Her works broke the rules of the mystery genre; she became known as The Queen of Crime. Her novels go from 1920-1970s. Actress who played Marta gave a phenomenal performance! Glad they cut away to her reaction to the suicide; the look of horror on her face was outstanding! Like Blanc said, Harlan’s demise was the result of “a tragedy of errors.” When he pointed out how Marta could visually spot the differences between the morphine and the correct medication, he said it so quickly. Needed subtitles for that. Can’t wait for the sequel! Glass Onion. Turns out that’s a Beatles song!

Awesome reaction. Even though I knew the answer your energy and excitement drew me in again. I remember watching this when it came out and my wife and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, and I'm no sleuth, I recall figuring it out as Marta discovered the housemaid at the old laundromat, who said forcefully, "Hugh did this!". "You" and "Hugh" are JUST the type of homophonic words to listen for during intense moments in a murder mystery. But, though I knew she said "Hugh", I didn't have ALL the answers on HOW he did it. I sincerely hope sometime when you find the time in your schedule which Im sure is probably busy between working you reaction channel and regular life is very busy. “Clue” is a lot like “Knives out” but with a bit more comedy in my personal opinion and plenty of suspense that keeps you guessing throughout the movie. You do know that Daniel Craig (Blanc) is the latest 007 James Bond (Bondi)? Ana Armas (Marta) just made the Movie “Blonde” about Marilyn Monroe. Great Cast, the husband Richard is Don Johnson (Miami Vice & Nash Bridges) who is the father of Dakota Johnson ( Fifty Shades of Grey) and the ex-husband of Melanie Griffith (Working Girl) and Melanie’s mother (Dakota’s grandmother) is Tippi Heddron star of the Alfred Hitchcock Thriller “The Birds”. It’s a Frigg’n Dynasty!…. SanJoséBob
