@@jenmurrayxo Remember Quibi? It was this short-lived app that offered original shows in 10-minute chunks. One of their projects was a Home Movie style retelling of this movie - featuring celebrities in bathrobes etc. A no budget project. Anyway, the last scene features Original Director Rob Reiner in bed and his father, the legendary Carl Reiner as the grandpa. What makes it sooooo poignant is that 4 days after saying the final "as you wish", and walking out the door, Carl passed away at 98. What a sendoff! I found a link! One of my favorite BTS stories involving this movie has been told by Robin Wright, AKA Buttercup. As I'm sure you're aware, Fezzik is played by one of the most famous professional wrestlers of all time Andre the Giant. Most people didn't know it at the time but he was an incredible sweet man and in her story she talks about how it was raining on set and he held his hand over her head and that was enough to keep her dry. Carey Elwes (Wesley) and Mandy Patinkin (Inigo) practiced for MONTHS to get the choreography and sword-play right for their scene, and this is considered one of the greatest on-screen sword-fights of the modern era. (They were taught by the same sword-master who helped Errol Flynn master the sword for his swashbuckler films of old) The scene where Christopher Guest (Count Rugen) knocks out Wesley (after they escaped the Fire Swamp) ... they tried over & over to get the "hit" right and he kept missing the mark. Finally Carey Elwes said, "Just hit me" and Christopher Guest made REAL contact with the pommel of his sword, truly knocking him out. Carey Elwes had to go to the hospital to get several stitches put in to close the wound

I hope I did this right.... Jill Bearup is a RU-vidr and stage combat actress. She broke down all the fun ways the Inigo-Westley fight is the Greatest Duel on Film (very possibly, 'ever'). Mind you, this isn't some dry, clinical treatise. She knows her stuff, and has a clear love for such scenes. But at the same time, Miss Bearup is enjoying the HELL out of it, just as we all do, starting from, 'You always start a fight with that question?' m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j0rkUbrPo3k.html

Okay...there is a wonderful book called 'As You Wish' by Cary Elwes (Wesley) all about the behind the scenes making of the film. So many warm and hysterically funny stories are told. Elwes has never had another role like this, which is so stupid...but he is one of my favorite character actors. This book is worth a read!!! - Mandy Patinkin, after 'The Princess Bride' he did a few other films, but mostly concentrated on stage work either in Broadway musicals (like 'The Secret Garden') or his concert tours promoting his albums. He won the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical in the late 70s playing Che in the Andrew Lloyd Webber- Tim Rice musical 'Evita'. He also created the role of George in the Stephen Sondheim musical 'Sunday in the Park With George' which is available on video. He has an amazing singing voice!!! He has done a lot of tv series as well...'Chicago Hope', 'Criminal Minds' and...'Homeland'. - Robin Wright. She was married Sean Penn and did a lot of arty movies, but recently was the female lead on the series 'House of Cards', played General Antiope in 'Wonder Woman', and was Jenny in 'Forrest Gump'. She is no longer married to Sean Penn. - My favorite cast member of the film was the late Andre Roussimouf aka Andre the Giant (Fezzik). Every single member of the cast fell in love with Andre during filming. Director Rob Reiner had to make tapes of the dialogue so Andre could learn his lines. Andre was so weakened by his years of wrestling and the damage his body had taken that many of the scenes that you think Andre is big and strong were done with practical special effects. He was just big...and he had a heart of gold. - The most interesting cast member is Christopher Guest aa Count Rugen, the Six-Fingered Man. Some fun facts: He is a writer-director-musician-comedian who worked with Rob Reiner before this on the classic rock-mockumentary 'This Is Spinal Tap', playing metal guitarist Nigel Tuftnel. They basically created the genre that Guest has made a career out of called mockumentaries - comedies that are have a scripted structure but are largely improvised by the actors and are filmed and presented like documentaries) Besides 'Spinal Tap', my favorites are 'Waiting For Guffman' , 'Best In Show', and 'A Mighty Wind'. But he is also the husband of actress Jamie Lee Curtis (the 'Halloween' movies, 'True Lies', 'A Fish Called Wanda'), and he is a titled British nobleman...Christopher Haden-Guest, 5th Baron of Haden-Guest. Until 1999, he was a member of the House of Lords in the British Parliament, when his seat was abolished by an act of Parliament. The title he holds is a hereditary title. - This was a novel first by William Goldman, who was the two time Oscar-winner for the Best Screenplay, for 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' with Paul Newman and Robert Redford: and for 'All The President's Men' with Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman (about the Watergate scandal). He got the idea from his daughters when he asked them what kind of story they wanted to hear...oe said a story about a princess, the other said a story about a bride. He would later do several other screenplays ( a few adapted from Stephen King novels). Goldman was the coiner of the most accurate phrase about Hollywood ever written or created. "Nobody knows anything!" A line from his book about Hollywood called 'Adventures in the Screen Trade'.

There's so much to love about this movie. But I think my favorite part is, that Westley was dueling Inigo left-handed.. even after Inigo told him that he had spent the last 20 years of his life doing nothing but studying fencing. Westley still felt confident enough that he needed to fight left handed to make it fair. Even though Wesley had only had five years of sword training at the most. His predecessor dread pirate Roberts must have been one hell of a fencing instructor.

To elaborate further, Mandy even later said, that because he was channeling his own father's loss, he felt like he wasn't fighting the six fingered man, but instead his father's cancer. When he slew the six fingered man in the scene, he actually said he felt relief as though he had slew his own father's cancer. Filming that scene actually helped him process his own grief. I find a certain poetry in knowing that not only was he perfect for the role, the role was perfect for him.

Andre the Giant was in a lot of pain while filming this movie. When Buttercup leaped out of the widow and into his arms, she had to be lowered down gently with wires as to not hurt Andre when he catches her. Mandy Patinkin, who played Iñigo Montoya in the film, described his favorite moment with the giant, "André and I were on the boat alone with only the script supervisor. She turned to André and asked, 'have you enjoyed this experience?' And he said, 'Oh yes.' She said, 'tell me, what have you enjoyed about it?' He looked at her and said - without skipping a beat, 'nobody looks at me.'" Cary Elwes recalls how much joy André took in being "just one of the guys." A privilege that the 7'4" giant rarely got to enjoy.

Inigo Montoya's ending in this is perfect to me. First, Count Rugan's response is perfect. Inigo Montoya slaughters four of his best soldiers so fast he kills the last one before the first one's body hit the floor. Then he gives a stellar line that shows not only is this personal, but this has been brewing for a long time to perfect the line down to, "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." Also, this swordsman has a giant for back-up. Of COURSE he turns on his heel and runs away. I wouldn't want any part of that nonsense either. Then there's the final moment. Most revenge stories in films are about the futility of revenge by focusing on how taking revenge won't bring your loved one back. "Offer me money." "Yes!" "Power too, offer me that." "All that I have and more, please..." "Offer me anything I ask for!" "Anything you want!" *STAB* "I want my father back you son of a bitch." Because the moral of those other revenge stories is "There's nothing you can do to bring my loved one back, so me seeking revenge is pointless." Nuh-uh, not with Inigo. "There's nothing you can do to bring my loved one back, so there's NOTHING THAT CAN SAVE YOU."

The forward talked about how his grandfather would always come and read this story to him and he loved it, then as an adult he found the book himself and discovered it was this huge boring book and his grandpa was just reading him the good parts. So he made an abridged version of the book which was only the good parts. Only there wasn't actually a real book it was based off, and was just him using that to tell a fantasy story that was all the good parts.

For me, the low key MVP would be Fezzik, because he was the epitome of a gentle giant. RIP Andrea the Giant My daughter bought me a sticker of Fezzik with the phrase "Anybody want a peanut"... I used to keep it on my computer at work, but now on my computer at home. :) I love how you had all the same reactions as the grandson, except for the kissing. ;)

One of the things that made this movie so great, is how it was a perfect adaption of the book. The book itself, while entirely fiction, was written as if it was the author doing an abridged version of a real book that his father read to him as a child. Throughout the book, it's interspersed with footnotes explaining what and why he left stuff out. Like the entire history of the countries of Florin and Guilder, 30 pages of exactly what a woman packed in her suitcase, followed by 28 pages of her unpacking after her trip. Basically it was a parody of Tolkien and other authors who wrote extensive backstory and lore into their books rather than just telling a simple story. So then with the movie, you pretty much get the same framing as the book, minus all the stuff the kid in the movie wouldn't know.. yet. Like his father (or grandfather in the movie) actually changed the ending.

Something I notice in the sword fight. Wesly only gains the upper hand when he slashes his sword next to Enigo's cheek, the same place he was cut by the man who killed his father. This causes a panicked response of him checking to make sure his face isn't bleeding, which leads directly to him being disarmed. This means that Wesly came up with that as a viable plan based on the story he was told only a minute or so before. This shows a serious talent for insight.

And I do mean a vast amount of star power including those listed as A list, sport stars, the director that made TPB ....so many but I guarantee a jaw drop and it is done with such love for the original.

If you like Cary Elwes (Westley), he plays the lead role in the Mel Brooks comedy "Robin Hood: Men in Tights". I also remember he played a good part in the Civil War movie "Glory". I'm not big into war movies, but I always liked that one. It stars Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. He was also in "Saw", but I won't recommend that one. Too gruesome, though there are those who like that sort of thing. I would recommend "Bram Stoker's Dracula". Elwes is in that with Gary Oldman, Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins.

There are two types of quicksand. The first is dry and is when wind blows dunes and a pocket of air forms below the sand; if you step on it, it will collapse and take you down. The second is when water saturates the sand (or more commonly mud) and it's you slide in... If you keep your wits about you, you can often swim out of it or at least float.

A little connection that I thought was clever, but I didn't notice it until after watching this movie many, many times: Becoming the Dread Pirate Roberts would, in a way, not take Inigo out of (as he calls it) "the revenge business." Oh my, if you you like Mandy Patinkin, you’ve got to see the movie 1990s Dick Tracy! He plays a club piano play named 88 keys. It’s an all star cast with Warren Beatty, Al Pacino like you’ve never seen before and Madonna as the club singer, Breathless Mahoney, her album, I’m Breathless, is addictively fun. It also has William Forsythe, Paul Sorvino, Dustin Hoffman, Kathy Bates, Dick Van Dyke and Cathrine O’Hara. The makeup and costumes are, in my opinion, better than any other comic movie out there. It’s so so good.

14:30 "O.... kay. Quicksand is _so_ scary. I... I'm sure it doesn't exist like _that,_ but is there real quicksand in the world, somewhere?" Oh, yes. But it almost _never_ exists the way it's typically presented on screen. It never looks like this, for example. This is _lightning_ sand. It also tends not to be found in deserts. Quicksand has _water,_ after all. It's actually usually found along riverbanks. It's no big deal, though, as long as you don't struggle against it. You struggle, it pulls you down, hopelessly. You keep calm and relax, and you float on it. You should have _very_ little trouble keeping your head above the surface until you manage to float over to the edge of it. Then you can usually find things to grab to pull yourself out.

Mandy Patinkin has said that when it came down to those final moments before he finishes off the six-fingered man that he imagined he was speaking to the cancer that took his own father, particularly when he's asked "What is it that you want?" and he replies with, "I want my father back, you *#&@%." --- Having lost my own father too young, that line just gets me every time.
