Knock Nevis
The World's Biggest Ship
Knock Nevis was the longest ship ever built and possessed the greatest deadweight tonnage ever recorded.
The vessel, built in Japan in 1979, was also known as Seawise Giant, Happy Giant, Jahre Viking, and Mont.
It was 458.45 m (1,504.10 ft) long and had a fully loaded displacement of 657,019 tonnes (646,642 long tons).
With a laden draft of 24.6 m (81 ft), it was incapable of navigating the English Channel, the Suez Canal or the Panama Canal.
In the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, the Seawise Giant was attacked by the Iraqi air-force, sunk whilst at anchor and declared a write-off.
In 2004 it was renamed Knock Nevis and converted into a permanently moored storage tanker (FSO) in the Maersk Oil operated Al Shaheen oil field offshore Qatar.
At her full speed of 16.5 knots (30.6 km/h) she had a two-mile turning circle and took 5½ miles (9 km) to come to a stop.
The FSO uses a Riser Mooring system which enables loading of the crude oil.
Knock Nevis had a storage capacity of 4.2 million barrels.
On 9 October 2009 Knock Nevis departed Al Shaheen.
The vessel was sold to Indian ship breakers and renamed Mont for its final journey in December 2009. It was beached for scrapping in Alang, Gujarat on 22 December.
The rudder weighed 230 tonnes and the propeller 50 tonnes however its 36 tonne anchor was saved and sent to the Hong Kong Maritime Museum for exhibition.

I don't think any ship will surpass her size for maybe decades regardless of the super competitive cruise lines the war fare the race for oil the container companies saving as much time as possible or any mining group from 1979 to 2009 she will hold her record for evolutions to come in my opinion

The maersk emma is bigger by volume. This is just longer, but the emma can carry more weight and has the biggest engine in the world.
@McLarenMercedes
@McLarenMercedes 2 года назад
@@doodskie999 First of all Emma Maersk *isn't even the biggest container ship* in the world. Not even in the Maersk Line itself. Those would be the Triple E-class containerships - of which 31 has been built since 2013. But the biggest container ship ever made is the CSCL Globe. The Wiki entry says this: "Upon its entry into service, CSCL Globe superseded Mærsk's Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller as the world's largest operational container ship." "The maersk emma is bigger by volume" Well, it says here it can carry 14,470 TEU (twenty foot containers). The Triple-E class Maersk container ships can carry 18,000 TEU But the CSCL Globe class of container ships can carry 19,100 TEU Second of all... "This is just longer" . Ships are NOT measured by length. Neither are they measured by "volume". No they are measured by *gross tonnage* and *deadweight tonnage* So let's compare the gross tonnage of the ships. Emma Maersk: 170,794 tons Triple E-class Maersk container ships: 184,260 tons CSCL Globe: 187,541 tons Knock Nevis/Seawise Giant: 260,941 tons You were saying?? "but the emma can carry more weight" No. She. Can. NOT. How much a ship can carry is *also* measured in tonnage, more specifically in deadweight tonnage. So let's compare the deadweight tonnage of the ships. Emma Maersk: 156,907 DWT Triple-E class: 196,000 DWT CSCL Globe: 204,605 DWT Knock Nevis/Seawise Giant: 565, 763 DWT (!!) So the Seawise Giant can basically carry *three times* (!) as much as those container ships. Yes, 565,763 tons in deadweight tonnage is an insane amount of weight on a ship. You were saying?? Here's what I am saying. You're ignorant. You make assertions backed up by nothing factual. You think you know more than you actually do. To reiterate: Ships are measured by tonnage and in that field Seawise Giant still is the largest ship ever made. Period.

Yes lhouma2000, it’s an incredible amount (there are several references, here’s one: www.vesseltracking.net/article/seawise-giant). ULCC (Ultra Large Crude Carrier) supertankers typically carry 2 million barrels (bbls) of oil while the Knock Nevis replacement vessels FSO Africa and FSO Asia can each hold 2.8 million barrels. For lots of great information search ‘oil tanker’ on Wikipedia.

Some of this information is incorrect, I work in the Lightering industry and in 2003 she was the Jahre Viking, We did STS ops with her in the Gulf of Mexico it took 8 AFRA max ships to empty her and when we was done looking up from close to the water line was like looking up at a sky scraper alongside

No, the vessel was bought by Amber Development Corporation and renamed M/V Mont for its last voyage to Alang, India in January 2010 where she was scrapped. According to Times of India the dismantling project took about 18,000 workers. Her 36 tonne anchor was saved and is exhibited in the Hong Kong Maritime Museum.

Good comparison Liam. From Wikipedia information taken at the end of 2018, when Knock Nevis was refit/extended (1981) she would have been 2nd in the list of entirely self-supported towers behind CN Tower (553.33 m), but 1st in the list of tallest buildings ahead of Sears Tower (442.1 m). Now Knock Nevis (458.45 m) would now be 6th in the list of towers and 15th in the list of tallest buildings.

@hydrographics100 4 года назад
Thanks for your comment. Although impressive, the Prelude FLNG is a floating platform and anchored in one location off the north coast of Australia. Until it’s last assignment as Knock Nevis, a floating storage and offloading unit, Seawise Giant was a supertanker ship which sailed mainly between the Middle East and USA. She was built 34 years before the Prelude FLNG. Freedom of the Seas was the largest passenger ship when built in 2006, Symphony of the Seas is probably the largest cruise ship today (2020). The Freedom Ship is a proposed floating city which may never be built.
