That throws me back to my childhood, when I once left the console on for 3 days, because I was caught in an eternal rail grind... then fell when I tried to jump off
5:43 after watching Mario do things such as travel backwards at lightning speeds and holding submarines, Koopa the Quick is not surprised when Mario starts emitting strange noises and vibrating.
can we please have a 2.3 year long live stream called "escaping a temporary softlock in real time"? thx. but for real, weird, but great video, had me mesmerized.
@@1waffleiron I think this is such a lucid description of how I feel about Pannen. It really is a math puzzle at the end of the day, a sort of exhaustive analytic proof, but played in the world of Mario so its surreal and intriguing.
@@blunderbus2695 But when Mario grabs the ledge during the falling animation, he spends a few frames above the platform in freefall before actually touching the ground. So if the bomb pushes Mario while he's still falling, he would never touch the ground.
@@arkhaic1792 I was going to write a comment of admiration for pannen, but your shitty overused nonsensical comment turned me off from RU-vid comments for today
If I did this right, I'm pretty sure the soonest that the Bob-omb cannon "softlock" would finish is on October 10th 1998. EDIT: Sorry, you'd finish setting it up on October 10th 1998, it'd all be done on February 6th 2001.
I got something similar once in HMC, where I got hit by the rolling rock and got stuck on the edge of the black hole in the center. Edit: I found my 8 year old video of it :D ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o3kJUS13vpg.html
Note that after being softlocked during 2.3 years (10:30), the first thing Mario does is to go into a cannon to kill a Goomba and then breakdance. Guess it's a kind of way to relax after being stuck for all this time. Great video as always Pannen.
That last part has given me an idea: would it be possible to lock Mario into the star animation for two years using knockback and a supersaturated Bob-omb? Or will the "ledge grabbing along a wall" strat remain uncontested throughout time?
There are two kind of people: 1) The one that get stuck in complicated softlock for demonstration and analysis 2) Me that, after years, still have problem launching Bowser
@@trolololo720 Before you even get to that, is there any recording setup on the planet that is stable enough to record continuously for that long? I know I routinely run into problems recording much more than 6 hours of footage without interruption. Most capture setups just can't handle it.
@@circuit10 Then hopefully the emulator or OS doesn't crash from some memory leak unrelated to the actual game (though I guess you could use savestates to keep your progress)
@@circuit10 If we're getting into crazy setups to run this game for a very long time, I think it's possible to run the game headless (meaning no graphics and no audio), mupen64plus comes to mind. Another crazier setup would be to modify the emulator to render a video file instead of outputting to screen or something like that.
I love how at 5:44 Mario is just bonking against Koopa the Quick's side over and over but Koopa the Quick doesn't even look annoyed or seem to care, he just ignores it. Damn that Koopa's patience is magnificent
exploring specific softlock setups in mario 64 so that you can use psychological tactics to trick simpleflips into willingly entering gbj in the next romhack competition
that only applies to certain things, like coins or bowling balls. Bob-ombs and Chuckya use 2-D sprites to simulate spheres, but they appear fine in Mario's hands.
Me: That midair chuckya self-toss into the heave-ho was slick, surely these can't get more elaborate than that. Pannen: This last trick requires 2.3 years of setup
"It's been 17 days, I still need to get out of here!" "...Day 58, the Bob-Ombs are becoming more sentient. They started to know my name." "2.3 YEARS! I'VE BEEN STUCK HERE FOR 2.3 YEARS! GET OUT OF MY WAY!"
This actually happened to me at once in Whomp's Fortress. I was trying to long jump onto the rotating bridge, near the breakable wall, but missed and ended up somehow getting stuck between the edge of the opposite wall and the slope. It was hilarious.
Dam that part at 0:20 where Mario said "O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O" is really deep and touching
Thank you for showcasing this softlock. I've seen this happen on many Mario 64 speed runs and as funny as it looks, I've always wondered why this occurs. Yet I keep forgetting to ask in these comment sections.
The 'world's longest temporary softlock' at the end is great, well done. I noticed that the first softlock was the only one to have its particular period, taking longer to complete the cycle. Are there any other 'long knockback grinding softlocks' known?
Poor Mario, 2.3 years softlocked up with no chance of parole. Maybe that's his punishment for all those Goombas he squashed? Silliness aside, the bizarre and intriguing nature of all these videos makes them thoroughly enjoyable. The incredible research work put into this makes even the seemingly mundane deep and interesting. Thank you for all your hard work and determination to find every last detail.
