15:01 You said "...worst thing that can happen..." when it's clearly NOT the worst thing. It's a lot closer to the 'second-best thing' and the "worst thing that can happen" in most situations is gravely bad. "Sure you should ask her out. What's the worst that can happen, she says no?" No, something in vicinity of 'worst' is that her crazy ex identifies you as the person standing in the way of their relationship with their one true love and soulmate and decides to puncture your brake lines right before your trip to take your grandmother and niece to visit your brother and his family up in the mountains. Then your brakes fail down a steep grade, you crash into a bus full of nuns which catches on fire, your niece and grandmother expire over the next 6 painful weeks in hospital, you're paralyzed from the neck down and your whole family blames you for the death and destruction caused by the wreck.

Isn't that a problem in all trades and professions but there are those that don't care about their jobs. Why are mechanics singled out for being lazy being crooked etc etc etc when we're working I'm badly designed vehicles with consumers or fleet managers that don't want to spend any money on fixing their junk but they haven't taken care of. Beating our bodies up backs joints knees wrists elbows you name it. Not to mention the thousands of dollars we spend to buy to perform our jobs. Name one other trade that has to spend that much money on their tools! In addition, mechanics as a hole are paid the least of any of the trades. For me, I was lucky. Working in the San Francisco Bay area where a lot of the shops were Union back in the '70s '80s. During my 43-year career I had 4 different jobs. Made excellent money at all of them especially the last one which was covered under the tipsters Union. I retired in 2014 today that job is paying over $100,000 a year plus Cadillac benefits. In addition it's an Aesop company meaning you get a huge payout after a few years. I wouldn't have retired except my body told me it had enough fun so I packed my tools. The other advantage to being a mechanic is that you can keep your cars for a long time. My wife's car is a LX 5 l mustang it's been modified a little bit suspension and 355 gears. A little Street fighter. She keeps it in showroom condition and my '93 F-150 SVT lighting. Also in showroom condition. Are the day truck is up 93 stock F-150. Good shape nothing special well kept. Always vehicles were bought used for total of around $22,000. That wouldn't be a down payment of the stuff you have to buy now. And personally I wouldn't want it. Too complex and equipped with stuff you don't need. Also, being a mechanic you're able to take care of here Jeeps, boats cars etc plus do stuff around the house and using your mechanical skills to your advantage. I'll guarantee you our boat never went to the loading ramp with a dead battery in our wheel bearings on the trailer never failed. So, in closing, you can call the mechanics whatever you want All I know is a trade's been good to me and the skills I have have served me well so anyone that doesn't like mechanics you can go suck eggs and pay a couple hundred dollars at the dealership to have your cars fixed and that my friends is $200 an hour!

I had a 1983 Isuzu P'Up that had a 4-cylinder Diesel engine. It got over 60 MPG, and ran forever! I always carried a couple spare glow plugs, just in case, LOL! I miss that little truck... The main reason I got it, was because the engine they used, was the same engines used in the Thermo King reefer unit. Which meant, that if I broke down anywhere, basically any truck stop with a garage could work on it.

I would be a bit careful just chucking 12v to a glow plug for long periods of time like that. On most modern engines the current to the plugs is strictly controlled via a pwm signal, which in turn controls how hot the plug gets. This helps to prolong the life of the plugs. The easiest and safest way (safest for the plug) to test a plug is to do a simple ohm's check on the plug. You will either get a very low reading if the plug is good, or an open circuit if the plug is bad - it's nothing more than a heater element.
@matts9011
@matts9011 10 дней назад

@@matts9011 Modern glow plugs are not like simple heating elements - most modern glow plug manufacturers specifically say not to connect them to 12v because you risk burning out the element or damaging the plug internally. They are designed to be operate from a controlled current source. Just go type 'Correct way to test glow plugs' into google - you will not find industry sources telling you to just chuck 12v into them. Admittedly these were not going to be reused, but the video does give the impression that this is an ok way to test your plugs, which is totally wrong. Years ago yes, when they were designed to take the full current from a battery, but most new plugs are not designed to take full current.

With lifted on big tires trucks like this and a few others you've had you probably will have to invest in an air lift of some sort so you can lift it up and remove the tires for things like this. I remember my uncle had one that had the 2 pads on the front and the angled arm out front you'd lift the bumper or frame with to get it off the ground for doing tire changes or simpler things of that sort. Was a LONG time ago, and I don't know what they were called. Still, if you can't get a lift some sort of lifting jack would probably help in situations like this. Just a thought. Anyway, I didn't know about glow plugs on these newer engines nor where they'd be located. I know you use to have to wait for the glow plugs light and the plugs before starting older diesels like semi trucks, but that was all I knew. So, I learned something. So, not a wasted video to me. LOVE the sound of those Dirty Max engines idling. Like singing, "POWER" or something...lol. Thanks for the vids. You're a better man than any of those who claim you're lazy. In this heat, especially. I can't even get outside in this heat because I can't breathe in it anymore. So, kudos to all you folks who take this heat and work anyway. Cheers.

One of my parents friends had a diesel boat engine that had a glow ball. Before starting the engine you had to use a blowtorch to heat the glow ball until it was clearly red hot. Then you closed the engine and started it. If I remember correctly it could run on just about anything flammable, so fotogen, about any kind of oil or things like that. I don't know if it would run on gasoline but it wouldn't surprise me. It was an old engine, like real old and not particularly powerful or efficient. But it was incredibly reliable, as long as you took ten minutes to heat that glow ball before trying to start it.

Milwaukee makes very nice ratchets. I was pleasantly surprised.

Howdy Ray and Mr. Dave! It's been a few days not watching your videos. We have been packing and driving to Florida! We made it to Englewood and the past day I have been recouping from the 16 hour drive from Ohio. But I'm going to take today to get caught up. Have a great day! See you on the tube.

GenXTalks was sent one of those ratchets a few months ago to try out. Our suggestion was to change out the dial knob to a thumb switch to change the direction.

That motor could do with an Italian tune up with injector cleaner in the tank.

When I first became a mechanic, one of my first jobs was to cut foam out in a tool box in one of our mobile maintenance trucks. I cut out little spots for a set of glow plugs for a 6.4L Chevy, as I didn't know there were glow plugs. Everyone got a big laugh out of that, and I learned to never trust a fellow mechanic. That lesson has served me well since 1993.

I liked the change the “blinker fluid”. In electronics, we use to charge up small capacitors and leave them laying around. A new guy would always pick them up. The pop and ensuing scream would cause much laughter.

I have a 95 6.5 turbo and she's a beach at times to work on too.. Glow plugs are just as hard to get at .. But I still get really good mileage and it starts good as long as regular maintenance is done. Good video Buddy ..

There is nothing wrong with HF tools. They are a good start at a good price. Bought the 1/2 inch impacts 10 years ago, and they are still taking a beating. It's probably the best value purchase I made at HF.

Talk about close quarters combat. Ray must have rubber bones to be able to contour his arms in such tight spaces. I know for sure, I wouldn't be able to do the job from that side without lifting the front and taking the wheel out. Dave , on the other hand, is a silent and very effective worker. When you least expect, he has his work finished. Happy Fourth of July.

I sometimes have an issue on my volvo v50 diesel due to the fact that at least one or two of my glow plugs are not functioning, at any temperature above freezing it starts fine (maybe a bit of blue smoke below about 5 deg c), but get down to -5 c and it starts hard, and kicks out a lot more blue smoke, pull away and within a few seconds its fine, below -10 degrees its very hard to start. maybe only firing on one or two cylinders (of 4). next time i put it into the garage I will ask them to test the glow plugs and fit new ones, my plugs are right down the back of the engine between the engine and firewall so not an easy swap out.

I just noticed, that those glow plugs are like the preheater elements on some ovens. If they wear out, the oven burner won’t ignite.
