Summer Schedule
Our schedule may vary, but expect a new video every Wednesday. Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a RU-vid channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

I’ve been watching for at least 2 years or so. Definitely through all of the 2019 season. And at least during harvest of 2018. Glad to see that despite what is going on in the world that 2020 is treating you a little bit better than 2019 did.

At 64yrs of age I've seen some grass cut, that type of mower was once popular for a while in the Uk, now its not used as much. I'll put a link to the popular types of Khun mowers in the uk in 2020, btw Ryan, flail mowers not great for grass if you want it to come back growing quicker, the flails smash the grass storks and they DO NOT come back growing as quick as if cut with a blade. Popular Khum mowers, easy to turn with and transport & use. www.kuhn.co.uk/uk/range/hay-silage-making/mowers.html

The other mower uses blades to cut with but have a flail conditioner on it. It’s not a flail mower
@robertstibz9506
@robertstibz9506 4 года назад
Yeh i understand that. When i mentioned flail mower. I was refering to those with the flail/blade on the end of a short chain type link. They really hurt the regrowth. Not a clean cut like the mower Ryan used.

It seems as if a narrow windrow would be better for drying. That way you are not running over it with the tractor tires and pushing it on to the damp ground. And the narrow windrow gets it up off the ground so that the air can flow through it better.

I've watched and commented off and on since your small square baler video many years ago. I cut with a 4840, basically the same tractor as a 4640, except all 4840s are powershifts, have a bigger fuel tank, and a bigger injection pump. My mower is a Gehl 2415. Good match. I totally agree with a center pivot, Swivel hitch is as important.

You guys should try a self propelled haybine. On our farm we use an older New Holland 1495 and a newer New Holland HW300. We like them because they use barely any fuel and we don't run over our windrows with them. It also make the cutting go way faster. You guys should try one sometime.

Why mow directly behind the tractor cutting your outside round? It doesn’t pick up where your tractor tires smash the crop down very well.... Coming back the opposite way picks up the crop that you smash down.
@LtColDaddy71
@LtColDaddy71 3 года назад
The problem with the equipment now is everything tries to tighten up into a windrow too much, and what that plant needs is sunlight after it's cut, so that it opens up and dries down without losing so much of it's nutritional value. Then you're buying supplements. It's like we're too smart for our own good. That one seemed OK though. If you can just keep 70% spread out, you'll get a lot better product.
