The provocative Egon Schiele (b. Austria, 1890 - 1918) exerted immense artistic impact within a 28-year life. A pioneer of Austrian Expressionism, the Vienna-based draughtsman and painter undammed a torrential outpour of moody landscapes, thrilling nudes, and chilling self-portraits in which he physically and psychologically stripped himself to the core.
This is Several Circles, where we tell the stories of extraordinary artists from across history and the present day. We believe art history content should be accessible-free of charge and impenetrable jargon, but abundant in fascinating facts, illuminating analyses, and entertaining anecdotes.
Each episode is written and hosted by Rachel, an art journalist-turned-copywriter at The Met, and produced by Jason, a New York City art technician. The fuzzy feline superstars are Jimmy (big and bushy) and Tallulah (small with thumbs).
We started this channel to indulge our fascination with what compels an artist to create the way they do, and we intend to grow it into a vast and celebratory archive of the weird and wonderful eccentrics who constitute the art history continuum.

I think it's fair to describe Schiele and his work as "somewhat controversial". I remember seeing adverts for Austrian tourism on the London Underground a few years back using his artwork, and how it was still pretty edgy, even by modern standards.
@TheArtTourist
@TheArtTourist 3 года назад
Yes! I saw pictures of those adverts, it was a cool campaign. Definitely controversial even by today’s standards, but worth pushing the boundaries of our discomfort to explore where he was coming from and how he influenced many significant artists who came after him. Just an opinion though, it’s totally understandable that his work goes too far for many viewers.

It's astonishing how much Schiele accomplished in just 28 years. I own the massive, small suitcase-sized book of this complete paintings put out by Taschen. I also own the massive, small suitcase-size book of Klimt's complete paintings put out by Taschen. Looking through both of them, it's easy to see how Gustav Klimt turned out dozens of works which can be called masterpieces. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that despite the massive body of work left behind by Schiele, he never created a true masterpiece. A few works of his are very famous, but a genuine masterpiece showing everything he was capable of? That remained something he was still leading up to creating. 🌻🐧🌻

Very informative. Really went indepth on Egon. There's an artist/ animator by the name of Peter Chung (he created Aeon Flux, and did the character designs on an animated show Phantom 2040, as well as a number of other animated projects and adverts). His figures are purely Schiele-like, even down to elongated limbs and torsos.
@TheArtTourist

We had considered mentioning Aeon Flux in the video but couldn’t find any definitive proof that Chung was inspired by Schiele.

Klimt or Schiele? On most days I think I prefer Klimt, but Schiele definitely goes into some territory not covered by the older master. His "Dead Mother" in your video really impressed me. Something curious in his paintings is that there is a lot of caricature. His self-portraits are instantly recognizable as him, and yet the proportions are grotesquely exaggerated. He has his own style for depicting people, and includes usually oversized hands with elongated fingers tending towards the same length. I wonder about the psychology of the hands. If only he'd lived longer he would doubtlessly have done many more amazing paintings, and probably evolved into other stylistic innovations.
@TheArtTourist
@TheArtTourist 3 года назад
Ooh good question! I would also say Klimt. I appreciate the unabashed ugliness of Schiele’s most tortured paintings, they seem to harbor a deep self hatred (which I respect!). And of course many of his paintings and drawings are also beautiful. But Klimt is just magical. I also wonder about the psychology of Schiele’s hands, and you’re right, who knows how he would have continued to evolve. Luckily he gave us plenty to chew on!

@@TheStockwell Ah, well, this is the type of thing we might revisit every so many years and come to a different conclusion. They are different enough artists that one might be swayed by mood to prefer one or the other at different times in ones life. Schiele is more the Expressionist, and forefronts himself much more in his work. Klimt is more the virtuoso whose paintings are inarguably gorgeous. I'm with you in preferring Klimt. His is the more technically sophisticated and layered art. But I may change my mind in another quarter century. Cheers.

Cute cat in the thumbnail! I have a question for you... The symbolism in your flowers in the vase you choose for each video, is this on purpose?
@TheArtTourist
@TheArtTourist 3 года назад
Yes! You might be the first person to notice! 🌻 We usually try to make a little bouquet that nods to the artist in some small way, either in the color or the variety. Schiele painted sunflowers so it seemed appropriate :)

I thought about naming my dog Schiele, because she's like a canine contortionist. She curls up so tightly you could mistake her for a round throw pillow. I also thought about naming her Peri, because her head pops up above the level of the dinner table like a periscope. In the end, we named her Kirby, because she's pink (greyhound mix; doesn't have much fur) and she snarfs down anything in range like the cosmic vacuum Nintendo character.
