She’s adored for her endearing scenes of mothers lovingly tending to their children - charming if archaic snapshots of a less progressive time. A little context goes a long way when it comes to appreciating Mary Cassatt’s practice for how radical it really was. Because if you’re unfamiliar with her story, it’s enlightening to discover that the woman behind all those gentle images was an outspoken suffragist who unflinchingly sauntered into traditionally male environments, and redefined what it means to be feminine in the process.
Several Circles is comprised of two loved up art professionals (and their cat, Jimmy) living and working in New York. Here, we tell the stories of extraordinary artists from history and the contemporary day. Written and hosted by Rachel, content and copywriter at the Whitney Museum of American Art in NYC. Produced by Jason, a professional art installer.

This was so great! I found out about Cassatt at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and now can spot her amazing works from a soccer field away. She has an amazing way of bringing the viewer into the scene that's very distinct from her male contemporaries.

Yes! Her work is far more profound than it seems at a glance. Thanks for watching!

My grandparents owned an original. They donated it to the Art Institute of Chicago because it needed some preservation. It's been on display there since the 1970s. I attended the School of the Art Institute, where I studied art history and photography.

Kitties make everything better😺 I did not know this woman much before, but she's cool af! I can't imagine living under the rules, roles, and bs regarding women at the time. I don't think I'd react well if someone told me I had to behave that way because of the sex i was born.

Thank you! If you’re in the market for more art history content, I highly recommend SmartHistory and The Art Assignment. We’ve also become totally obsessed with the art critic Waldemar Januszczak’s documentaries, which you can find on RU-vid. They’re super fun and informative. So glad you’re enjoying our videos, we think Jimmy’s the best part!

Rachael and Jason, thank you very much for this excellent presentation. I especially wanted to thank you for the incremental references to Mary's dealing with her family in her later years. These details have often been ignored in biographical profiles. Thank you.

So glad you enjoyed it! I wasn’t previously aware of Cassatt’s falling out with her family so I found it fascinating and, of course, tragic when I came across that anecdote. Thank you so much for the kind words, they’re very much appreciated!

Ta for your excellent coverage of a wonderful artist and a courageous, principled one at that. MC must have had a great sense of humour to suffer Degas' political and racial nonsenses!

The limitations she faced are why she kicked @$$. It made her try harder…she had real skill that’s why she won over her peers and support…an artist’s artist…

The only reason we know her as Marie Cassatt is because thats how the French pronounced her name. She was an American from old money from the Pennsylvania Cassetts and her name is pronounced Cas-set and after reaching artistic fame and visiting the state she would correct the pronunciation of her name. She was very proud of her American origin.

By the way, Degas was a fellow American (from New Orleans). And to paint Academic artists as "stuffy" is too broad a brush. It is all too easy to see the impressionist movement as a political movement. It was not. Thank you for this Cassat history. In my opinion Cassatt was the most radical of the impressionists. It is just that her less challenging works have been popularized.
