In his prolific years as a painter, illustrator, and printmaker, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (b. France, 1864-1901) wielded an immensely impactful style as colorful as his life, spent vigorously documenting the glamor and debauchery of Belle Époque Paris after dark.
This is Several Circles, where we tell the stories of extraordinary artists from across history and the present day. We believe art history content should be accessible-free of charge and impenetrable jargon, but abundant in fascinating facts, illuminating analyses, and entertaining anecdotes.
Each episode is written and hosted by Rachel, an art journalist-turned-copywriter at The Met, and produced by Jason, a New York City art technician. The fuzzy feline superstars are Jimmy (big and bushy) and Tallulah (small with thumbs).
We started this channel to indulge our fascination with what compels an artist to create the way they do, and we intend to grow it into a vast and celebratory archive of the weird and wonderful eccentrics who constitute the art history continuum.

Lautrec's story is such an innately tragic one in so many ways, though he produced some beautiful art along the way.

Interesting. Lautrec had a better sense of line and composition than any of the other post impressionists, or impressionists, or at least he explored and emphasized it more, which is clearly evident in his "At the Moulin Rouge" you opened with. The choice to make the woman in the foreground's head green was also reather startling, though not at all unconvincing. Some of his works really look like Degas, but they humanize their subjects more reliably. I didn't know about his tender depicions of prostitutes lying together. Very imformative video packed into 15 minutes. I enjoyed it.

I would LOVE to see you cover Zhang Daqian. He had so many different periods on mastery and even his last work was an epic. Alos, thank you SO MUCH for your Artemisia Gentileschi video! She's one of my personal favorite artists.

Thank you for this video. HTL is perhaps best known for his posters. Because of the posters be avoided the poverty of other Impressionists like Monet & Van Gogh. What I discovered about him are his paintings. To me, though less garish than his posters, they are more interesting to me. I enjoyed looking at his equine images. You can see his love for the form of these animals like Degas. Much has been written about the male glance. As you point out, his paintings of the sex workers don’t lean to the lascivious. The woman are depicted with sensitivity. This may be because he was seen as a freak due to his stature. Maybe he could better feel the pain the women were suffering because of the pain he was experiencing. I enjoyed seeing TLT through your eyes. I will explore his paintings further. I’ve Loved the French Impressionists for a while. It is only recently part of this appreciation is due to my interest in street photography. Some of the Impressionists’ paintings look like the best of street photography. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

Another excellent and empathetic S.C. summary - ta. (By the by, I think T-L's influence on Aubrey Beardsley has yet to be established formally. I'm not an art historian but I'm sure there's a direct connection under the 'covers'.)
