Edvard Munch’s (b. Norway 1863-1944) The Scream is an illustration of face-melting, spine-chilling agony so alien and yet familiar that it’s reverberated through the centuries. Few images pack a punch this intensely - but it’s also tragically eclipsed thousands of equally searing artworks by this brilliant albeit deeply troubled Norwegian artist.
This is Several Circles, where we tell the stories of extraordinary artists from across history and the present day. We believe art history content should be accessible-free of charge and impenetrable jargon, but abundant in fascinating facts, illuminating analyses, and entertaining anecdotes.
Each episode is written and hosted by Rachel, an art journalist-turned-copywriter at The Met, and produced by Jason, a New York City art technician. The fuzzy feline superstars are Jimmy (big and bushy) and Tallulah (small with thumbs).
We started this channel to indulge our fascination with what compels an artist to create the way they do, and we intend to grow it into a vast and celebratory archive of the weird and wonderful eccentrics who constitute the art history continuum.

He really leaned into his depressions and anxieties for inspiration, amazing he lived to 80 working that way.

Yeah he was a angsty annoying artist. I love his art but as a person he was very unlikable.

Red/pink sky is a normal sight in Norway in the summertime by sundown. “I was walking along a path with two friends - the sun was setting - suddenly the sky turned blood red - I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence - there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city - my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety - and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.” ― Edvard Munch - About 'the scream'. The red haired model in alot of Munchs paintings is Tulla Larsen, whom he had a passionate and turbulent relationship with, and who also affected his art alot more than Milly, and whats given credit for here. Munch was too good for us Norwegians, and never got the recognition or treatment he deserved.

Edvard Munch was so emotive in his work and his language is one that has always really spoken to me. Great video and great channel! The Scream is indeed his most famous work, but he was so much more; his art really captures a burning loneliness and a raw admiration for beauty in a way I struggle to find words for.

I sense Edvard Munch smiling in response to your distinguished appraisal of his versatile palette. I much value Munch's work and trust your comprehensive appreciation will perhaps come to afford a few more circles on some of the artist's creations individually: there are at least eight masterpieces in his canon, if not more. Freud smiles too!

The Scream may be quite dark, but, whilst not as anguished, I find Between the Clock and the Bed downright morbid by comparison. Wonderful and evocative artist.

Interesting point! I see what you mean. The Scream is so exaggerated and it’s been parodied so many times there’s almost something darkly comical about it, whereas Between the Clock and the Bed is really sobering.

This peice is just amazing they way that Munch has used Curvature to his advantage to draw the viewers eyes towards the screaming man honestly brought a tear to my eye. This piece is just Exquisite.

@@TheArtTourist no worries & great ! :), such a arts such a beautiful thing and it’s a shame you can’t always find in depth detail on artists, even harder with ones that aren’t house hold names. Especially if you can’t afford to purchase expensive books. Think that’s why these are such a good thing to be on here.

That Peruvian mummy really does look like the subject in The Scream. May just be coincidence. Someone did a nice job of morphig it with the painting in the video. You left out my favorite Expressionist. I'll perhaps do a video about him myself down the line.

@@TheArtTourist Nice resource. I'll be searching through there to find stuff to watch. I created a new account and I'm sharing my first art video. It was a learning experience, mostly about the software, but people seem to like my unconventional flavor. I'm a visual artist myself, sooooo, I don't really stick to the script. There are psychedelic and sci-fi flourishes, etc. I also have a tendency to go against the grain when I see an opening. 2nd and more ambitious (also even weirder) video is in production.

This is the first time that I'm aware that Munch also painted in a Academy style in his early years. I'm also curious if Munch's works from 1903 to 1907 have to do something with the fauvism or pre-fauvism movement? (though I know fauvism originated in France, but it happens that it was active from 1904 to 1908) Or it is that both expressionism and fauvism movements could be influencing each other?
@TheArtTourist
@TheArtTourist 3 года назад
Yes! Fauvism absolutely came into play, especially as Munch spent some time in Paris as such modernist movements were burgeoning.

@TheArtTourist
@TheArtTourist 3 года назад
Thanks! We work in the art world in NYC and most American art professionals here say “go”. Also, pronouncing it in the Dutch, British or French manner may only confuse our mostly American viewers. When we eventually make a video about van Gogh, we’ll likely cover the various pronunciations.
