I found the fighters to be useful as a vanguard screen against enemy ordinance and fighters when deployed to patrol ahead of where your fleet is going to end up. Though I do wish that you'd be able to recall your attack craft squadrons to their carriers.

I think squadrons could definitely use some form of additional level of micro management

After watching your videos I enjoy this game so much more. I need to go back and watch your total war stuff. I feel like certain games draw in certain types of people and strategy games have the friendliest most helpful players.

So the impression I'm getting is if you want your fighters to do their job and return safety to fly again you really need to consider the threat. I think I need to use them defensively until late game when there are less ship turrets around.
