Special rules: Parables teach one key truth Proverbs are principles not promises Poetry - examine figurative language and structure to determine its meaning Prophecy - almost always a near application and a far application

Very good teaching. Lately, I have been reading a lot of devotionals and Christian books. I need to spend more time in just my Bible. In the past month, I've only sat down and done 2 Bible studies. I know because I looked at the journal I've been using and I have 2 entries lol... I agree that not only me, but a lot of people spend too much time taking from other people's opinions on the Bible instead of reading it and letting the Holy Spirit speak.

This is fabulous! How to implement? Every church have as its goal to ensure that every person who 'graduates' youth group has read the Bible in its entirety, understands its basic literary and theological structure, and moreover can give a cogent answer to the five basic challenges: 1. why do you read/believe the bible, 2. why do you believe in God, 3. why do you believe? Too hard? No. We set the bar too low.

Question for anyone who can offer insight.. How can I come to the Bible for comfort, peace or a struggle I am facing without it becoming a Xanax approach? I want to really study and know the Bible but I also hope to be able to look to the Bible and prayer for help when I am weary or really struggling. What is the balance ?
@lighthousechurch6330
@lighthousechurch6330 4 года назад
Know the promises of God and preach them to yourself - there are many promises that give us comfort. Matt 28 - he is with us always to the end of the age, James 1 and 4, if we pray for wisdom He will give it and if we draw near to Him He will draw near to us, Matt 11, come to Me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. All of Romans 8 is awesome!! We don't want to turn every Bible verse into a promise for us and into God speaking directly to us, if the context doesn't allow for that (I think the key for you here is understanding context - who is talking to whom and why in each passage)- but there are many amazing promises God makes to His children and to His Church and these all apply to you as a Christian and they are all yes and amen in Him! In other words, they are absolutely certain. Phil 1:6, Jude 24-25, 1 John 1:9, etc etc etc :)

It’s been a while since you left this comment - but I would encourage you to simply read your Bible, asking questions like how does this point me to Jesus? what does this tell me about God? what does this tell me about myself? when we seek to know the truth of who God is through scripture, we get to delight in comfort and peace. Scripture always points us to seeing the goodness, justice, mercy, and sovereignty of God and we can rest in assurance that the God that we come across in our Bibles is the same God that loves and cares for us! The God of Abraham, Isaac, David.. is the same God of us today. That is a truth that brings comfort and relief. I hope this was helpful!

Depends where the man's coming from @ 7mins. Being that 10 are the Mosaic Covenant and the other two are the greatest Commandments namely loving God and loving your neighbour as yourself, equalling twelve. The man is correct if he meant it this way. If he meant it this way, she has mistaken him and didn't ask him if he was also referring to the other 2. These other two are the foundation for the 10.

I must respectfully disagree with you on a couple of things. The Word of God is living and active. From a natural view I can see how taking a verse out of context can be dangerous. But The Spirit of God can use all types of media, situations, etc. to speak to His children. I've experienced this in my own walk and I was unsure at first about this very topic. As I learned to test the spirits and prayed for discernment I realized that our Father can and will do this very thing you are cautioning against. Father open our spiritual eyes so that we may see and please give us discernment so we are not led astray. In Jesus name, Amen

How would this practice dictated by the Lord your God be relevant today? Would a God of Love have ever mandated this? Deuteronomy 22:13-21 New International Version (NIV) Marriage Violations 13 If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” 15 then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was a virgin. 16 Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. 17 Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, 18 and the elders shall take the man and punish him. 19 They shall fine him a hundred shekels[a] of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives. 20 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you.

@@MrJohnowen79 Thanks for your concern and comment. Yes I realize what you highlight here. But Yahweh is/was Jesus, they're the same being. My greater point was...Would a God of love have ever mandated this? Would a God of love ever find animal and human sacrifice somehow effective? Would a God of love ever command this?......... And so being a Trinitarian, Jesus said to Moses... Numbers 31 17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. 18 But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. I suspect these passages cause you the same unrest as they do me, but yeah regardless, Peace to you too.

@@zach2980 ok then would a God of love allow his only Son to be beaten and nailed to a cross? You don't believe in Jesus Christ or you did say Yahweh. Do you believe he died. What about sodom and gamorrha. I believe the word of God and does the creature say to his creator what are you doing or why? I don't have the answers. Who can comprehend the mind of God. But he is just and he can use humans as his instrument to bring about judgement. I ask you then what do you mean? Because of this verse your citing are you saying that God is not of love and that the biblical account is not true? I'm not sure what you are trying to say. Would God mandate this? Idk would he did he?

i think you misunderstand/underestimate a holy and righteous God; it is GRACE that man was allowed to even exist, after the fall, in Genesis. God gave perfect commandments, to showcase sin and our fallen condition. the fear of the Lord is hatred of evil, but "...men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." (john 3:19) so even though God gave perfect commandments, man ALWAYS fell short - especially - in the example you gave. The bible isn't about man seeking God, and big 'meanie' God, it's about God seeking to restore life to man, which He did through Jesus Christ. "But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory-" Romans 9:20-23..... The law (commands in the old testament), points to our sin, and need for a savior - we all have fallen short: none is good, not one. Jesus Christ did what we could not do: he was fully man, but fully God: he beared our sin through his flesh, and put to death what was earthly, on the cross. "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." 1 Corinthians 5:21 God restored life to man, after MAN chose death, in Christ. I recommend changing your perspective on who the main character is, in scripture... it aint you... it aint me... it's the one who is mighty to save.

@zacharofsky go listen to The Bible Project podcasts about the Law. This was a portion of the common law practice amidst a small enough community where situations like this would put the whole community off balance, while also disrupting the sanctity of covenantal relationship. Common law would be intuitively interpreted and applied to each circumstance by local leaders, while statutory law (what we live by in the US) must be followed exactly. A loving God established covenantal relationship with Israel and marriage was meant to display that. This law comes in because humanity is not loving like God is, and Moses knew that the Israelites needed the reminder of what they were called to.

Bible Hypocrisy in a single verse. The same verse that says treat relatives nicely, also says it is ok to buy slaves, enslave children, and pass slaves on as permanent inheritance. *Leviticus 25:44 46* However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way.
