See, this is why my Tabaxi Bard is always smoking "something" out of his pipe. When I play him in character he's just a mellow guy who's easily distracted by shiny things or wandering off if he sees something fun. Rogue: "Ok, Bard, you listen at the north door, I'll listen at the south one. We'll meet back here and report what we can hear." Bard: "You got it." Rogue: [moments later] I turn to Bard and ask- DM: He's gone. Rogue: Come again? DM: He's gone and the door to the north is open. Rogue: What? DM: You see the Bard in the room to the north. He is sitting at a table with three bandits. He is playing dice with them. Rogue: He's playing dice with the guys we're here to kill?! Bard: The DM told me my character heard them playing dice. DM: He rolled very high on his Charisma checks.

As an actor player my party was very surprised when in of the sessions I wanted to try something new, so I didn't pick a bard, but instead I made a Lizardfolk warlock named Larry, they all thought it was gonna be a very generic warlock of demon or something like that, turns out he was Warlock of the Celestial pact, that has a patron that guides him to do good things, but as a Lizardfolk he doesn't know what good things are, so when he sees somebody in struggle he really doesn't know wherever heal them or eat them, so basically because of my DM that is an actor everybody laughs a lot with my character and my patron interactions Best quote from my patron: "You are a Lizard Larry" I love dnd

@@thefracturedbutwhole5475 Yes, I do disallow it, and it works. If someone considers that lame, that's ok. Everybody is free to not join the table. That's the reason I say it during session zero. This was also in reply to 3.14 Dragon, who mentioned "issues with player killing", and it is a perfectly viable alternative, just like the one you presented. TBH I must say, In my experience as a player and GM/DM, I am yet to find anyone who would have fun in getting a PC killed by another. Even when we were teenage newbs, testing the possibilities of an RPG, and PVP'ing whenever we had the slightest chance, killing each other would result in frustration and in-and-out of character drama. Thing is, if you kill a PC in a session, don't be surprised if someone accuses you of being a d1ck.

My player kept rolling insight and could never figure out what was up with him. Ah players thinking there is something huge to something tiny is freaking hillarious. I had one player who found out a few people had disapeared from different houses. He found a teleportation cirklet and could tell that whoever was in there had suddenly disappeared. It was one of the lords. He later found all of the lord's men, waitresses and guards dead behind a fake wall in the basement. Now it is kinda obvious what happened right? He was kidnapped and everyone else were killed..the thing was..for some reason he was never able to put two and two together and guess that being able to teleport from one location to another would also make you able to teleport back the other way around.. So he started believing the whole city was actually infiltrated by these people and that it was a huge plot that involved all the guards and even the other Lords since they hadn't seen anything. He investigated it for days before he finally saw someone teleport in then grab something and teleport out again before he just went "O..ohh..right..." It was fucking hillarious.

The problem with a lot of "actors" in this sense is that they're not actually actors and therefore play super one dimensional characters believing them to be filled with depth just because they made some elaborate backstory but they never actually stop to think of the small things like, what the character finds funny, their favourite foods, drink, pastimes etc. that give you more of an idea of who the character actually is and how you should play them than "My entire family was once killed by Orcs so now I hate Orcs." Just like with the Devout Paladin example. Devout Paladin is perfectly fine. What people fail to understand in playing them is that if your god or your order believes something, even if it's not true, then you may end up doing bad things but believe them to be good. This is where alignment fucks up everything in D&D and makes literally no sense. Your order might think all Tieflings are devil spawn and abominations against nature. Therefore you, an otherwise Lawful Good Paladin, might kill them without any qualms because you believe they are evil and think you are doing good even though they're completely innocent, normal people like everyone else deep down. That's how real life actually works. Very few people do evil things for the sake of being evil. The problem with the Actor type is as I said, they actually can't act well and really put themselves in that person's shoes. They just have one dimensional ideas of how the character should act and therefore their responses to situations in-game are usually super over the top caricatures of how someone would actually act. They won't just be disgusted by Necromancy, they'll be like "If you use necromancy I'll have to kill you, it's what my character would do," but in reality it's not because if they did it, they'd have 2 or 3 other party members to fight then. People aren't generally idiots when it comes to stuff like that. Being Good does not mean you can't do bad things. Believing in redemption doesn't mean you try to save literally every monster and npc you encounter. Same goes for Rogues. "My role is to steal stuff, I steal stuff." And that's were the acting ends. It's just a one dimensional, shallow representation of some base trait. So they'll make out like their character would always try to steal and always be stealing everything in every store or from every npc etc. That's not how a real master thief operates. They're generally a lot smarter and more subtle than that. Pick their targets carefully. Run long cons etc. So the actual problem with the Actor type is often that they're not good at acting and just play silly, over the top caricatures that take everything literally and don't allow for any sense of nuance or change in their character as they play. It's a "My character is like this or believes this and that's final" outlook believing that that is good roleplaying when it's in fact the exact opposite. People change over time. Their views change through experience and exposure to the people that surround them.

This. An actor who knows how to create a good character is a fantastic asset to most games. One who doesn't is nothing short of frustrating.
@flinfake
@flinfake 5 лет назад
The conversation on alignment begins with a definition of what the axis mean within the context of D&D and your table. My definition is that evil is something which is harmful or undesirable. Good is something that is beneficial or desirable. Order is a generalist mindset. Chaos is a situational mindset. The paladin in your example committed an obviously evil act by deciding to kill as a method of problem resolution. This would be true regardless of who or what the paladin killed. Many people who fight for good causes irl kill for a greater good while still recognizing that by doing so they are committing an evil act. Killing Hitler does not get you good karma points, objectively speaking, as you are just purging evil, using evil methods, not doing good. You don't get to decide the morality of your actions based upon the results, it is decided by their inherent merit. If you are unwilling to sufficiently define alignment of course it won't make sense.

@@flinfake there's no such thing as good or evil in the universe. It doesn't care one way or the other. Things are only made so by how we humans perceive them to be. In the past, eating meat on a Friday was a full on sin and could send you to hell according to the church. Now nobody gives a shit. If a paladin is good aligned and his entire order sees tieflings as the spawn of devils sent to earth to do their bidding, spawned by unholy deeds then of course that lawful good paladin will murder tieflings without much thought whilst also still technically fitting to be lawful good because what they're doing is considered good by them and perhaps by the greater world. Hence why I say alignment is dumb and messes things up because in dnd it's a factual thing that exists, not up for debate but yet it still is up for debate depending on the DM and players in question. If someone does a bad thing for a good cause but that thing is still bad as you say then no character in dnd should ever be of a good alignment as they murder countless creatures. Whether it's justified is all down to individual perception but in dnd it's not, it's supposed to be cut and dry except it isn't and we keep going in circles.

Guilty as charged. I try not to kill a character unless it's like... they attempted to kill me or another party member first but i play this game for the roleplay and couldn't break character if I tried without feeling guilty about it

I'm an Actor, I play d&d to play a character. I come up with a character concept, and I try and make a d&d sheet out of it. And I get pissed off by characters that don't take roleplaying seriously (I can't describe it, it's like you have 1 quirk but no personality and your choices are actually the player's decision, not the character's knowledge), though I won't say anything, it's more of a pet peeve. Edit: JESUS FOOP!!! 30 LIKES, THAT'S THE MOST LIKES I HAVE.

So as a dm i thank you guys for being actors because you make this game more fun.

Roleplaying is the better part of fun for me, but I'm not actually as much of an actor as I would like. I'm too cautious at the moment. That part about interacting with NPCs? That's me, but if the DM isn't into it then I don't press for it. The Star Wars parody looked like fun to do.

I'm an actor but I've found ways around some of my flaws. For example, as an actor I often love to try to talking before fighting. Sometimes this doesn't work out because my party members hate it. So I always work my characters so that their personality can be shown in combat too. Like my paladin I played recently, even though he often tried to talk out conflicts beforehand sometimes the barbarian would NOT be into that. So we came up with a system, I would always say a prayer to my goddess before killing. Occasionally I wouldn't even fight at all, during the battle I would just kneel and pray for forgiveness to my goddess. And as the game progressed this happened less and less because my paladin grew to trust his party members as much as his god. Later in the game he murdered someone in cold blood, not something he was supposed to be doing. He actually REFUSED to apologize to his goddess and stood up for his friends and party members choices as well as his own. He told the goddess quote "take me or leave me." She respected this honesty and loyalty so much that she bestowed a blessing on the ENTIRE PARTY! What I'm trying to say to my fellow actors, combat is: 1) combat is important and it CAN be filled with amazing roleplaying 2) don't kill your party members, find some other type of outlet (unless the player and DM have okayed it) 3) let your character grow and change with circumstance. Seriously, dnd is about making a living breathing world so don't let your character become static. 👍

Not only was I a newbie but also an actor and my DM knew it. , I played a fighter and drunken soldier, DM threw a Lady of the evening at me, turned out to be a vampire, rest of the party is waiting for me to go into combat. my thoughts, he is a soldier and he did pay his gold. rest of the players said good by, nice knowing you. DM says you wake up with 2 puncture wounds in your neck, minus 10 hit points and half your gold isgone. I asked did he have a good time ? DM said role for it . I critted. Rest of the players thought I was crazy. DM had me tagged by the vampire hooker, she became a spy, I was her mark. instead of trying to kill her for following me, I seduced her to the good guys side. She helped us win the campaign. Acting !!! Thank You !!!

I killed a character once without discussing it. He was kind of annoying throughout the campaign, but slowly started doing things that were more and more evil. My character was LG and didn't particularly like violence (not a killjoy tho... I even allowed everyone else to become vampires as long as they didn't do evil stuff). Came to a head when I was trying to cure people, and he was dicking around and killed this poor innocent civilian, so I took my Radiant mace and bashed him right in the face with a crit. I didn't *mean* to kill him, but I wasn't sad about it. He was kinda getting tired of the character anyway. One of my favorite D&D moments.

When I played for the first time my friend was playing "neutral rogue" which means he basically stolen from every-FUCKING-npc we came across. When he killed some npc that cought him red-handed I killed this guy character and sold his body to guards for a reward. He didn't play murder hobo ever again with me, so I guess there are reasons to kill party members from time to time

Personally, I hate, HATE the “Actor” type of D&D players. They never break character and are always incredibly obnoxious to be around. I have NEVER had a single positive experience with this kind of player (No Joke). They always take it way too far and base everything on “what their character would do.” Having some light roleplaying is fine, but These players treat the game as though they are method acting, and when I want to talk straight to them, it’s practically impossible. Even when I provide some advice and/or recommendations, they refuse to do anything unless they have an in-character reason to do so, even though it makes no difference at all. _D&D is a Tabletop Game, not a Hollywood/Broadway Production involving improvisation._ If you like to excessively roleplay in D&D: whatever, more power to you. But keep your distance from me

I was really sad to read this. I wish you could have had a better experience. I'm an actor type and my favorite thing about the game (other than combat) is staying in character but doing insane mental gymnastics to alingn my characters motivations with the party because that makes it a better game. The FUN of being the actor is finding out how to make "what your character would do" helpful to the group, or if it does cause a little conflict maybe make it a light thing that can be solved in under 2 minutes and you can all have a laugh. If people make characters that escalate things to the point they try to kill party mates, I just ask them to leave. I have *ghasp * evil character in the works. She's not a murder hobo, just callously selfish - but even power hungry people need a possie. "These people may be a bunch of goody-twp-shoes but they're MY friends, I might as well help them do things that make them happy - it serves me better in the long run" Or a lizardfolk that's supportive of the party because they give him snacks and help him against scary monsters - a pack is strong when they work together. It doesn't have to be bad. I'm really sad to see that it often is.

@@jaxx1258 I'm sorry, but you REALLY DO NOT make it sound fun/interesting to play. I find it just an incredible waste of time to create an entire archetype in a game that is MEANT TO BE A GAME. If you were writing a novel or a screenplay, it makes sense to create full-fledged personalities to the characters you create. But a game that is meant to be played among a small group of people and where adventuring is central, creating a long, 3-page backstory to some character sheet just absurd.

I am the D and D with a campaign that treats the main quest as a side quest since I want each character to strive for their own goals whatever that is aligned to the main quest or something completely different. This causes a lot of drama in character and makes the experience really interesting as people get emotional about things that effects the character also it's really fun for everybody in the groups since they love making a backup character so PVP conflicts are not an issue XD
