A good method for planning out lip syncing is to listen to the audio and count how many frames each syllable is. Write it down, and make frames accordingly; try to have lip movement on as many frames possible (even if it's slight) to keep things lookin' smooth; transition to and from each syllable. (Assuming you're saving these all with SMH, which you should) After doing all of the basic lip movements, go back and add blinking (especially in places where lips aren't moving), and small simple head movements on important syllables. Small head movements make lip sync look WAY more realistic and nice, watch Dr. Face's (or my own) videos for examples. If you want bigger movements, or movements involving SMH's "tweening", do those before you do the lip sync since you need the empty space for that; you've already mapped out the syllables so you should know about where to put them. Lip syncing is probably one of the easiest parts of animating to make look well, it just takes practice! Oh, and you might want to use standard models (not HWM) when you're starting out to speed up the process... But don't rely on them too much (I'm guilty of this); HWM is much better.

I like using the Phonemes tool as a very rough start and eventually go over every syllable again.

This would be a LOT easier if humans just stopped it with the lips and swapped to more efficient glowing plates with speakers behind them. It would speed up the amount of animations, that much is certain!

dang, i actually found this video pretty helpful, so much so that i got that false "heheh i can do this like a pro immediately now!" feel. But of course, the screenshots will take forever and i've never even heard of that "Stop Motion Helper" thing. Been meaning to try making GMod videos for a while, didn't realize you had tutorials, maybe i can finally get my start.

This is kinda cool, my piano teacher has worked with the composer of the Hotline Miami soundtracks. It just feels awesome going to my lessons knowing that he have influenced something that I know much about, but that I never noticed that detail.

This my friends is why writers make storyboards first before any actual animation is made. Better to get out your ideas into some external form first before they get lost in the deep sea of lost memories forever.

At first I was like, "There's a fast way to lip sync!?" Then you were all like, "There's not." And then I was all like, "Okay...I thought so."

If you have a character with a full helmet on, It's an advantage cause you don't have to lipsync but It could be also less interesting (as long the animation is impressive)

0:42 I get that it's not perfect, but it's not terrible. You can go from that and refine it, which is what the tutorials tell you to do. They don't expect it to look very good with custom audio so they give you a base and they you improve on it.

Oh my, Lyp sync is horrible, it really takes a ton of time for just a few frames! I've tried it a few times, and it's really hard to sync the audio and the movement "sort of" accurately :V Gotta give some recognition to BoSchitt. Great work and thanks for the tips!

I don't even make machinimas or animate; but I still love this series.

I find that animating the mouths of tf2 characters easier because they have a phonetic slider, whereas in contrast, half life models can be the worst in my experience of dabbling with lip syncing. And there are some sliders with them that seem to do nothing. A separate tip for those using gmod models: check the fingers of your models before you use them if any scene requires finger posing. There are some that fuse the middle to pinky fingers together or even all but the thumb.

I did some of facial animation on Black Mesa, and thanks to some problems with the automatic extraction software in Windows XP, a lot of it ended up being somewhat manual. (I faceposed the military BEFORE they all got gasmasks! Argh!) But I will say that manual attention tends to make *all* animation better when it's by someone with experience; I think motion capture can be great when it's used to quickly fill in a lot of movement that might otherwise not be able to receive the same attention; but it still makes facial animation look un-lively (this statement made with extra emphasis on games like L.A. Noire. Even when the characters looked "realistic", the realism and sometimes excessive extra moment actually distracted from actual expressive emotions). Through individual attention, stretching muscles futher than they'd normally gomakes faces easier to read when you're viewing them through a smaller computer screen (or, in Black Mesa's case, maybe even across the room as well) @Lucid - This probably wouldn't be worth the effort for several reasons. One is the varying amount of emphasis that might be placed on separate syllables when someone says a word multiple times. You'd have to adjust the phoneme positioning anyway. A better goal is to find ways of not re-doing individual phonemes. Face Poser, the software used for manual face animation in Source, was pretty good at this; it defined a series of loose mouth expressions from the vast facial muscles that were assigned to phonemes like "FF" or "oh". Those phonemes are what play during any sequence, driving the face animation. In TF2, the phonemes just get their own muscle group on the actor's face.
