We started with putting our child on the toilet from the time she could sit up. Pay attention to times of the day that they poop and also check for signs of pooping (like the grunting), and run to the toilet.

So happy I dabbled in elimination communication with my little one. At 18M we obviously aren’t potty trained but we aren’t scared of 💩 directly in the toilet a few times a week if we’ve got the timing right! Not sure if I’ll be doing it for my second, though so this is really helpful for that!

We started this since birth and poop in the potty consistently since 14 weeks. Our baby absolutely hates soiling a diaper (we had about two accidents per month until 6 months while asleep and then a bout of stomach flu where he couldn't make it to the potty and man... The distress of pooping in the diaper was noticeable)

We've been doing EC since baby was 4 months old. We didn't bring potty with us when we would run errands on the weekends or during the week to appointments but he'd still use potty in the morning. But occasionally he'd need the potty every now & then when we were out. Because we didn't have the potty on these trips this became an issue. EC says, if you can't catch them all dont stress. But letting them go in the diaper when they need potty is not healthy for them. There needs to be a disclaimer.

Another video I wish I had seen when toilet training my first child several years ago. The potential problems you describe at the beginning are EXACTLY what happend to my little one and eventually we had no choice but to use medication via a suppository to help her clear all the compacted waste AND then redevelop her confidence in going to the toilet after such a negative experience....

My daughter was just going to the toilet before she went to class 1 at four years old, before that she couldn't hold it long enough so she had a diaper at night and when we want out. Hi Emma! I watch all your videos even if the topic is not timely for me now. But this one soon enough will be. My second child is 1y5m old and toilet training is ahead of us. So I try to gather as much information as I can. 😊 my daughter when she was potty trained, refused to poop in toilet, she would just run into corner and poop there in her pants. If I catched her doing that I would bring her to toilet and put her on the seat and she would poop there. No problem, but she would not ask to go poop, as she would ask to go to pee. And we would talk every time, that if poop, then toilet. And about after 2 weeks of pooping in corner she just started to ask to poop in toilet. I don't know, something clicked I guess.

I have a small tool to seat right next to her. That haves her a sense of comfort and safety. Other thing is to celebrate loudly when she finish, and that works to motivate her too. And finally, she loves to see it disappear when pull off the chain (of course, we close the cover). We as parents, can express excitement and estimulate curiosity to make it a great experience too!! I was wondering the same thing, my nieces got trained partly via a potty. They seemed to like it because in the start, they need to be fast, and they can get on it themselves without waiting for an adult, so there were few accidents. My sisters in law did it in kind of a parallel thing, they could go on the toilet or on the potty, whichever they chose at that moment, and it seemed to work fine.
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard Год назад
Hi @MsLauroraBorealis personally I prefer to go straight to using a normal toilet with a family style toilet seat and a 2 - step foot stool. In this video I go into more detail about why this is my preference: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dozUWmgtkig.html Hopefully this makes it easier for you to make this decision. Just a note, if you do decide to use a potty then it's best to place it in the bathroom if there is room. This will help your child learn that this is where you go to poop or wee and also give them an opportunity to get use to the smells and sounds.

At what age would you recommend trying to potty train a non verbal autistic toddler?
@Soldrakenn
@Soldrakenn Год назад
I don't know if this is helpful, but my kid's autistic, and at that time she was still non-verbal (started talking at four y.o) and we didn't have a diagnosis yet so we pushed through, but rewards worked great on her. And in general, I always tries to think of it like this "my kid takes longer to learn new things, so I need to start teaching them sooner". You want them to counquer these things as soon as possible, and it might take more than twice as long to get there, so I'd start asap, but with baby steps. And make sure to not let bad habits/tick stick, divert that asap, those bad tics get harder and harder to get rid of the more times they repeat it. We got her off dipers between 1.5 and 2 yo, there were some relapses, but it's different for everyone.

We are at the point where our LO, almost 3yo, will happily pee in the toilet and she's not wearing a diaper throughout the day, so she's familiar with all things toilet, but she refuses to try pooping on the toilet. She'll ask for a diaper. She refuses to sit on the toilet while pooping even while still having a diaper on for the familiarity, so I'm not sure how else to convince her to try it... Any ideas?
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard Год назад
Hi Larisa, the first step is continuing to let her poop in the diaper but restricting her to the bathroom and then once she does the poop, if possible, I recommend removing the diaper and flushing the poop down the toilet. That way she can see that is where it goes. Then it's important to make sure her feet are supported by a footrest and she is sitting on a reducer ring or family style toilet seat, if she does plan to use the toilet. I would also think about watching a video called "Tom's Toileting Triumph". It's a cartoon which shows a boy learning to use the toilet and going through the steps. It can be helpful for kids to "see" what happens when people sit on the toilet - which is possible in this cartoon as the toilet is see through. You could also talk to her about what exactly she is worried about.

It's great to hear these videos have been helpful and your little one is able to use the toilet at home. From your description I am not sure why she is not able to feel she needs to use the bathroom when she has underwear on. The first step would be talking to her that although she has underwear on they will not 'hold' the wee so she still needs to use the toilet when her body says it needs to go. Then I recommend she wears underwear when she is at home (no long pants or shorts). She will have an accident but she will see the wee doesn't stay in her undies and she still needs to go to the toilet. When she has an accident try not to get frustrated, just reinforce that the undies are not like diapers and you still need to use the toilet. I would expect that she will soon learn that she needs to go to the bathroom. Once she learns this she may be able to start wearing only undies when she is at the park/mall.

Going to share some personal experience that could potentially help parents watching this for advice: My mom went the positive reinforcement and reward direction with me. I've had really bad IBS-C my whole life so it took 2 years to complete potty training. The IBS stomach pains were a huge deterrent in potty training (similar to the stubbornnes-induced constipation talked about in this video), making the positive reinforcement pretty necessary. If you have a toddler with an angry gastrointestinal tract, rewards can help motivate your kiddo to work through the feelings of inadequacy that make them want to give up (***flashback to 3 year old me squeezing my mom's hands really tight while I sat on the potty, crying and saying "Mommy I can't do it, it won't come out"). Anxiety makes it all so much worse. I'm 29 now but we still laugh about Mom's method: the poo sticker reward chart. Mom had a little grid on paper with about 30 boxes. I got to choose a little sticker and put it in a box on the grid when I pooped in the toilet. When all the boxes were filled up, I got a reward (new barbie dress, piece of candy, etc.). Mom simultaneously potty trained me, improved my confidence, and taught me patience in working toward a goal. Please remember that if your kiddo has that much trouble going, see your pediatrician and/or a pediatric gastroenterologist. Little ones can have big gut problems, too.

My First Son used to always remind me when he needed a stool because he didn't like his legs to dangle we had a stool in the bathroom but he would often run in there and sit down without it and then call for me to put it underneath him because he couldn't poop without it. I will say though the best way to potty train is to do elimination communication early and never diaper train in the first place. Babies have sphincter control from birth and they are naturally inclined to not soil themselves. If they have another option they will take it very quickly. We essentially diaper train before we potty train. We train babies to soil themselves for 2 years and they become comfortable with it. That's about the time we try to untrain it. Pretty silly 😅

Oh lord this is exactly what happened to me. I was never properly potty trained ever in my life and I often dread going to the toilet to poop so I made a habit of holding it in. What you described what medically happens in the colon is an eye opener for me as it was exactly what I experienced. I poop once or twice a week only as a result. I’m now 30+ years old and have just recently started pooping every other day. It is only now my probably stretched out colon has started healing from decades of holding on to the habit of holding it in that started in my early years of life. I will do everything in my power to make sure this doesn’t happen to my little one. Thank you for this video.

We have a seperate bathroom and toilet…not enough room in the toilet to do a lie down poop nappy change…would you be recommending we move poop changes from the bathroom into the toilet and just do standing bum wipes (not always the easiest with the 21month old but doable)…

Can you tell me how many months it takes for the baby to start potty training?

Everyone i know that implements it, including myself see the benefit. Although it is a commitment. But if you're breastfeeding then you'll be together 24/7 anyway so go for it. I would say, EC is all like if you can't catch them all then don't worry. I fell into this and didn't bring the potty with me when we'd leave the house (or I would & didnt use it)...causing baby to hold poo. So now we're definitely going all in. No mindset of, oh if he goes in his diaper oh well..now moving forward its going to be a part of our lives all 👏🏼 the 👏🏼 time👏🏼

These are great tips! I'm not worried about my son being scared of the toilet. It's his favorite play place in the house. If we forget to close the bathroom door, he's in there playing with the toilet brush, putting his hands in the toilet, and trying to flush. I sure hope all that time being a hot mess helps with potty training. Great idea about diaper changes, we'll start doing that.
