I just realized that those two were just getting set up on the chess game not making any moves but the message of chess and life was applied to the ending. When Samuel Jackson's character asks his son if he's ready to be the king and his son starts crying, fresh realizes he became the king and both of their actions led to them losing important people in their life. On the mental side, it can be a stalemate between the father and son because they stand as kings and can't meet each other anymore. It was going to be their last time. Another interpretation I had is that it was a checkmate for Fresh because the moves he made was able to get him and his sister out of the projects while his father has to remain in it. The moves his father made caused pain and separation in his family and he is cursed to live in poverty alone. Another interpretation that goes along with the checkmate, Fresh did not come to the victory on his own because the knowledge his father imparts to him allows Fresh to win. The strategy his father gave him allowed for him to be the king. It operates as a way for the father to save his son, and the son to save his sister. They may not see each other for a while and the mistakes they made brought separation to them but the opportunity opens the chance for them to see each other again.
watched this movie for first time right after hearing this. Thank you for spreading your knowledge, I will never forget this movie and I've learned a lot. I will show this movie to my kids one day (If I have any)
One of the most depressing but realistic hood movie out there. Some of these actors even appeared on 'The corner' Kind of the predecessor to 'The wire' In a way. Classic knx video as always!
Not many movies capture life in NY hood in 90s like Fresh. Felt like I was teleported back to my childhood. If you haven't seen it I recommend you do. It's like a coming-of-age movie but not like The Wood or Boyz 2 Men, it's more realistic. Not everyone gets a happy ending out of the hood, Fresh was just lucky and smart, there were (and are) tons of kids in a similar position but don't have the luck he does. I'm glad that kind of life is not that prevalent anymore. Even though it's not meant for kids I still think kids should see just to know how much better things are today and how bad things can get especially if you came from a hood like Fresh and actually made it out.
This beat, these clips, everything surrounding this video creates an amazing tone and feeling that complement one another, so much so that I knew I needed to watch this movie. After watching it, now that scene with Fresh crying has just as much emotion as I hoped it would. Amazing work knx ❤
@@morlordca Yeah I don't think I've ever heard sample based music be used as film scores before, Flying Lotus (a sample based producer) has worked on OST's for anime's but I'm pretty sure non of it is samples because who wants to pay for that lol
