You can really use this position from birth with most babies, but it is a little trickier to get the hang of it and for both mum and baby to feel comfortable. I have a newer video now in which I show the most common positions with my newborn. You may find this helpful. Sorry for the late reply. When you are reclined, there may be too much pressure on your scar but if you are comfy sitting up then yes, it shouldn't be a problem.

Hi Christina, I'm sorry to hear your baby is suffering from reflux. Could there be other aspects of breastfeeding that may contribute to the reflux such as his latch (is he keeping a good seal or drawing in air?) or your let-down (is it fast and overwhelming for him?). A more laid-back feeding position often works with optimising latch and drinking speed. If you are looking to adjust the Koala hold a little to make it work for your and your baby's anatomy, consider the diagonal approach (baby straddled on the opposite leg to the breast that is being offered) and again, once latched on, adopt a more reclined position. This will also help you as you won't need to hold baby with 2 hands/arms. Follow this link of my other positions video and you will see the diagonal laid back feeding. Thank you for your comment Geraldine. Yes, the Koala hold can be tricky if you have a long newborn who is not supporting themselves yet. The approach to this challenge usually is to modify the upright position by reclining. This gives your baby more room on your body. I have a newer video with this position.
