Kobe Bryant Bummed About Lack of Support at 2002 NBA All-Star Game

February 10, 2002 - Performing in his home region, Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant was treated to a healthy dose of naysay from the Philadelphia crowd during his All-Star Game MVP performance in 2002. The origin of such derision was suggested to stem from Bryant's Lakers defeating the Philadelphia 76ers in the previous season's finals though others felt it may have been in reference to Bryant's impressive all-star game shot volume.

I respect Kobe for being honest. He looked as if he wanted to cry. I was one of those people who hated Kobe back then. As I got to understand him as a player and his work ethic more, I started loving Kobe. Call me a pole rider if you want. Kobe was a G.

Being from LA and being a diehard lakers and Kobe fan that means a lot ... that’s made respect and love to know because lord knows when he played he got no love compared to when he died ... but as a basketball fan alone that comment makes me happy

Too bad. Don't know why they would boo him. Philly had 1st pick in 96. They could've picked him. And since he's from Philly they should be proud to have such a great player and now one the greatest ever come from their city
@genericallyaccepted
@genericallyaccepted 8 лет назад
I remember this game and their were two reasons why he got booed. The first reason was because he was shooting like crazy. Seriously, it felt like every time he touched the ball he shot it. And the second reason is that the year before the Lakers beat the sixers in five games during the finals. But I remember they didn't start out booing him.
@kobewan1
@kobewan1 8 лет назад
@ArmandoKozomara exactly. So basically... Philly hates the guy who they could of picked in the 1996 NBA DRAFT but they picked allen iverson. Kobe was a beast in the 2000 NBA Finals 24.1 ppg (vs allen iversons team)

its shocking how stupid you people really are , first of all lower merion is NOT in philly , its like maybe an hour drive from here second kobe had just helped cream us in the finals third a lot of fans here are just emotional and believe every thing they hear from media which is why they boo players they shouldn't then give them an ovation later like when kobe played his last game here they cheered everytime he touched the ball and were the first non la crowd to do that and started a chain reaction

Kobe was a class act, what a great answer. Philly's fans are notorious for being incredibly rude and boisterous, they didn't deserve Kobe in the first place, and to boo him reflects very poorly on them and their character.

Some say it began in 2001 when Kobe and the Los Angeles Lakers came to Philly to wrap up the NBA Finals. Prior to the decisive Game 5, Kobe famously told Philadelphia 76ers fans, he was coming to "rip the fan's hearts out".
@iztheillest
@iztheillest 3 года назад
It was Philly's fault he said that. He never made that statement until AFTER they booed and mocked him. Tf did they think was gonna happen, someone like Kobe to not say anything? Philly got what they deserved lol

I remember vividly watching this game as a kid. At the time I was against him and wasn't really a fan because I was all about the Raptors and Sixers for obvious reasons. But I remember watching this game and the interview and then all of a sudden I felt so bad for him. I borderline hated him but those were real emotions. I think that was the first time that I really started to realize that these guys are more than just basketball players their human too! Ever since then I tried to separate the player from the man if that makes sense. But I was really saddened by this. He deserved better!

Isaac_Mvp_10 Go watch the series and if you don't want to do that then just look up the stats. Shaq started out with a 44/20 game and followed that with a near quadruple double. He out rebounded and outblocked Dikembe who was the DPoY that year and never scored less than 29 points.
@tagbon_
@tagbon_ 8 лет назад
+LakersDynasty42 Kobe is my favorite player but Shaq's dominance is being forgotten with time. His averages were just stupid in general but then take a look at his 3 peat finals numbers...insane. Still, Kobe had a good finals against Philly with the exception game 1. He did kill Philly in that series as well.
@LakersDynasty42
@LakersDynasty42 8 лет назад
Da Beast The way people talk about the 3-Peat years really bothers me as a fan of the team and the sport. You hear about the feud and how Shaq was lazy which was true but for those 3 years there wasn't a more dominant player in the game. Dude was an absolute monster and would routinely having 40-point/20-rebound games like it was nothing. I think Kobe had a very good series but he didn't have a game that really broke Philly's back.

Stfu. Philly loves kobe. When he retired gave him a great tribute and when died gave him an even better one. When you see Kobe you're lookin at a Philadelphian. He embodies South Eastern PA. Look at the way he played the game. His killer instinct. There aint nothin LA about em. It's a Philly thing. You wouldn't understand. You're nit from the east coast. We're very passionate and very prideful people.

He was booed because of his comments before the 01 finals when he said he was "coming back to Philly to rip their hearts out". The fans were upset with him for quite some time after that and it wasn't until his last season that he finally got love from the hometown crowd. I'm not saying the fans were right or wrong but that's the facts of the situation

He brought it on himself! He gave an on-court interview the night before on all Star Saturday which was broadcast all over the stadium as well as on TV. He was asked a simple question and bricked the answer. Question: how does it feel to be back home and play in front of your home city? Answer: I live in L.A. now so I consider myself a Los Angeleno. When I come back home I’m coming to tear there hearts out. This was the very young and cocky Kobe that didn’t always say the right things his first few years. That is why he got booed
