In this video I break down “lucky number 8” a song from my instrumental album Conductor We Have a Problem. I was greatly inspired by Kobe Bryant and Mamba mentality while making this beat with my Roland sp606 and Mpc One. It completely transformed my approach to beat making and removed me from a bit of a writers block!

Yo conductor, you inspired me to pick up an MPC One. I’ve had mine for about a month and just figured out how to sample and BPM match and actually use samples. Next I decided to use a one-sequence/2 bar method where I double the sequence until I get 64 or 128 bars and I use track mute to arrange the parts of my song. Two songs turned out great! I felt like I cracked the code! But, now my MPC One glitches every time and gives me random track mutes and ruins my recordings 😢 I know how to delete automation, after I do, it does it again! Random AF. I feel like maybe it’s my 2.10 firmware, I’m hesitant to update firmware, which version are you running? Any bothersome bugs? Thank you for your art

yo i had the numark m2 and it has no bass compared to both the allan and heath xone and the 20+ year old numark dm2002x. it does have crisp highs but yikes, the bass is scooped out(!) there's no way to process after the fact to make up for it. and then there is the wild variation in sound quality between stylus...

yea...I really aint think about it that deep-- I just needed a mixer cause my baby boy spilled milk on my old one. I think it works good... good enough.

@ConductorWilliams for me it was not only the mixer but the stylus/cartridge. i was using a generic one from ebay and not thinking anything of it, then i got a technics 1200 with an og stanton radio stylus and it is incomparable the ebay one did win in the crispiness department like for dusty drums, but it had by comparison no bass, sounded like a cardboard box. the stanton had incredible bass, extreme stereo separation and very musical sounding. then as a test i got a "replacement" stanton stylus from ebay that looked identical, but sounded like a crappy am radio(!) i build the whole rhythm section from vinyl, drums and samples. those low frequencies and the overall tonal quality is so crucial (having had a chance to a/b between just those few mixers/styli). i scrapped everything i made before the change over there is that much of a difference

Fueling your own drive. Makes sense whenever we work on a beat that we get into uncomfortable spaces, but you dont conform those shapes. I used a smaller sample but was like a synth cord the same way , but this was much more grundge.

I’m an hip hop producer and I often wonder how it is possible to contact labels to apply for licenses and copyrights for the tracks in question. How do you request licenses and permissions? Do you use channels like tracklib? It would be interesting a video about it. Being myself a "sample artist", I feel very limited because maybe I am not even allowed to release those songs, also for the price that labels require. Let me know, peace!
